A/N: I think I've been hyping this party up for like 40+ chapters now lmao.

“Your Invitation, please.”

Even as the doorman takes the invitation from Thaddeus’ outstretched hand, his gaze lingers on Natasha for a moment. Not all that surprising, really. She knows how good she looks right now. Black is, and always will be, her color. On top of that, the strapless dress she’s wearing is designed to accentuate her already perfect curves even further.

Finally, the doorman’s eyes leave her and move to the invitation, before checking it against the tablet he’s holding in his other hand. After a moment, he simply nods and returns the invitation to Thaddeus.

“Welcome Chad Cummings, White Pawn. You may enter.”

Thaddeus tenses up at the use of his government name, but thankfully it’s not so fancy an event that everyone needs to be announced. In the end, the young man decides to let it slide and they make their way into the party from there, Natasha hanging off of his arm like the beautiful accessory she is.

They make for quite the matched set, really. Her in her tight black dress, him in his perfectly tailored all-white suit. He was a Pawn of the White Queen after all, so he had to look the part.

As they enter the Gala proper, Natasha flicks her gaze around minutely, taking in the sights and checking to see just how much… interest their entrance engenders. Fortunately, the answer seems to be ‘not much’. Some eyes turn their way of course, and some even linger for a moment. But those that linger only seem to be doing so because of Natasha’s looks. Very few pay Thaddeus himself much attention, and those that are staring don’t seem to recognize Natasha for who she is.

No, instead they study her like a piece of meat, and as she and Thaddeus make their way further into the party, she picks up more and more ‘admirers’ along the way. Hyenas one and all. No doubt they would already be lining up to approach her if she wasn’t hanging off of Thaddeus’ arm.

Not that his presence would keep all of them at bay. Oh, he was certainly physically imposing enough, being one of the tallest and most impressively built men in the large ballroom. Still as soon as they realized he was nobody special within the structure of the Hellfire Club itself, Natasha anticipated getting plenty of unwanted attention tonight.

But not yet. For now, they had a moment to themselves, each grabbing a champagne flute from a passing server and sipping from it gingerly as they made their way further in. Well, Thaddeus sipped from it. Natasha simply pretended to drink. Best not to let anything cloud her judgment on a night like this.

Part of her still bemoaned her failed manipulation from back when Thaddeus first told her his intentions of bringing her along tonight. While SHIELD was very happy to hear that Natasha had gotten close enough to Thaddeus to secure this invitation, and would no doubt be very interested in whatever she told them about tonight… Natasha would have preferred to use this opportunity to cut ties.

It wasn’t anything personal, at least on her end. It was simple pragmatism. Right now, she was torn between two loyalties. The first was to SHIELD, who she owed quite a bit for getting her away from the Red Room. And they aimed to squeeze every last ounce of that debt out of her. But the second was to Thaddeus, who might just have a shot of giving her a chance at motherhood, the one thing she’d secretly wanted longer than anything else.

She would betray SHIELD in a heartbeat for that opportunity… rather, she already HAD betrayed them. And the longer this whole charade went on, the greater the chance that they would find out about her change in allegiance. Natasha needed to be out from under SHIELD’s thumb before her womb was healed and she wound up pregnant… which she imagined would happen any day now, really.

Every time she and Thaddeus fucked, she got stronger, faster, better. At this point, Natasha could put her fist through a concrete wall, albeit with considerable effort. She was more than the Red Room had ever intended her to be at this point. But… surreptitious scans had showed she still wasn’t healed from the last procedure that they’d performed on her. She still hadn’t recovered the one thing she wanted most… the capacity for childbirth.

On the one hand, Natasha found herself chomping at the bit in a way she’d rarely done in her life. On the other hand, it was for the best really. After all, once she was confirmed pregnant, the clock would start. She would need to enact her plans to get away from… everyone basically.

Still, tonight could have been the catalyst for her cutting ties with SHIELD. If Thaddeus had taken the bait and gone with her suggestion, Natasha could have counted on him and Emma Frost to help her go to ground and hide from SHIELD. Then, when she was finally healed and confirmed pregnant, Natasha would only have had to escape from Thaddeus and Frost, a much easier set of circumstances.

The most irritating part was Thaddeus didn’t even know he’d stymied her. Even now, she could tell he didn’t realize her true desires. No, in the end he’d shut down her plans because he actually didn’t care all that much about the other parts of the Hellfire Club. He was happy to let her report to SHIELD on what she saw here tonight in order to keep up appearances with them.

Frustrating but not unsalvageable. Though, even as that thought passes through her head, Natasha sees the first of her many admirers finally beginning to approach out of the corner of her eye. It would seem that word of who Thaddeus actually is has spread through the party by this point. As a lowly Pawn in the Kingless side of the Hellfire Club’s Court, Thaddeus’ influence and power was practically nonexistent.

Natasha readies herself for whatever might come next. If need be, she would allow herself to be peeled away from Thaddeus’ side, both to protect her investment in him and to gather more information for the inevitable report to SHIELD.

… However, before the first man can even reach them, he suddenly seems to trip over his own feet… and right into a server carrying a fresh tray of finger foods. Natasha doesn’t bother schooling her reaction. After all, tonight she’s supposed to be Natalie Rushman, RA… and Natalie would definitely go wide eyed at the embarrassing sight.

“Oh my god sir, I’m so sorry!”

“Get off of me!”

Food has landed all over the man in question, and as he pushes the server away and stands up, some of it is… well, saucy enough to be sticking to him. He tries to brush himself off, but to no avail. The damage is done and in more ways than one. Natasha can tell as much when the man lifts he head and winds up making eye contact with her.

One look at her wide eyes and pitying glance and he scowls angrily before turning and walking away. Obviously, the moment had been thoroughly ruined and he wasn’t going to try to seduce her off of Thaddeus’ arm now that he was covered in food.

Of course, that was just the first of several… not that any of the others fare much better. Natasha finds herself watching from her periphery, actually struggling to make it seem like she doesn’t notice all of the incidents that suddenly befall anyone who shows her even the slightest interest. It’s honestly rather… strange.

Before any of her admirers can close in on her and Thaddeus and make a play for her, some form of misfortune always winds up redirecting them. For some, it’s as simple as being interrupted and drawn into a longwinded conversation by someone they seemingly can’t ignore on their way to her. For others, it’s just as embarrassing and humiliating as the first, sending them skulking off in disgrace at having committed this or that social faux pas.

It takes Natasha far too long to realize Thaddeus must be doing something. But before she can lean in and ask him directly if he has some sort of hand in it, there’s an announcement. She and Thaddeus might not have been important enough for one… but the King and Queen would be, of course.

“Announcing Sir Sebastian Shaw, your Black King and Dame Emma Frost, your White Queen!”

They also don’t come from the entrance, but rather down the massive, bifurcated staircase in the center of the room. Natasha has to admit, Emma is giving her a run for her money in the pure white dress that the blonde is wearing. Meanwhile, Sebastian Shaw cuts quite the imposing figure in his black and red suit, practically oozing confidence as every eye in the party turns to him and Emma.

There’s polite clapping from all involved while the Black King and White Queen of the Hellfire Club descend the stairs. Natasha and Thaddeus join in as well, though Natasha feigns hesitation when Shaw’s eyes fall upon her and affix there. There’s the briefest of pauses before he leans over and whispers something to Emma that seems to alarm the blonde, though she hides it quite well with a smile and a whisper back.

A moment later and Thaddeus suddenly whispers to Natasha. He barely moves, doesn’t even lean towards her… but his words reach her ear all the same.

“Shaw has made you.”

Ah. That explains the look. Natasha doesn’t stiffen, though it’s a near thing as she barely moves her mouth in her response.

“In what way, exactly?”

Because there were different layers to this clusterfuck. If Shaw knew she was SHIELD, they were probably all dead. But if…

“He recognizes you as a Black Widow, somehow. He asked Emma how I had managed to snag one of your kind. She feigned surprise and concern, telling him that you’re just my dorm RA.”

Ah. That wasn’t… terrible. But it did mean that Shaw believed her to have infiltrated this party through the Hellfire Club’s newest member. And that, it seemed, was a bridge too far. The Black King steadily begins to approach, with Emma brought along for the ride hanging off his arm.

Somehow, she doesn’t think whatever Thaddeus was doing before is going to be quite so effective now, especially against a man with single-minded focus like Shaw. No, she’ll have to figure out how to play this. If they’re lucky, then Shaw won’t expose her in front of everyone and dress Thaddeus down for falling for her tricks. But she’ll have to act fast and make it clear she knows that the Black King knows who she is. Perhaps she can offer him her services in a surreptitious manner to appease him so he doesn’t make too much of a scene…

… But before any of that can happen, before Shaw and Frost even reach Natasha and Thaddeus, something happens over at the entrance.

“Wait, you can’t-mmph!”

Blinking, Natasha turns her gaze towards the door along with everyone else just in time to see the strangest of sights. There’s a blond man in a white suit that gives Thaddeus’ attire a run for its money. Streaming into the ballroom on either side of the man are other men dressed in white, wearing masks… and wielding rifles.

But the strangest thing of all is the blond man’s hand, currently covering the face of the doorman. It’s not human at all… rather, it gleams in the artificial lightning, clearly made of metal. Sneering, the blond man begins to squeeze.

“I am Donald Pierce, White King of the Hellfire Club. I assure you, I certainly can.”

The doorman lets out a muffled scream and ineffectually claws at the metal hand, trying to pull away but to no avail. Finally, there’s a squelching noise as the skull gives way under Donald Pierce’s metal grasp. The doorman’s head is pulped in it’s entirety before the blond finally releases the corpse and allows the body to drop to the floor.

Nobody tries to stop him, likely in part because of the dozens of masked gunmen dressed in white that now line the party’s walls, all of them looking more than ready to shoot anyone who dares to make a move.

Flicking the gore off of his metal fingers, the self-proclaimed White King strides into the Gala, an arrogant smirk on his face as he eventually finds himself standing across from Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost. Natasha and Thaddeus have been completely forgotten by the Black King at this point in time. Instead, every ounce of Shaw’s attention is focused on this newcomer… on this challenger.

“Pierce. Ever the cockroach, I see.”

Shaw’s drawl draws a bark of laughter from Donald Pierce, even as the blond man sneers and clenches his hands… both of them metal, Natasha finally notices, into fists.

“Did you think I would let a filthy mutant kill me? Did you think that your vaunted power was enough to put down ME?! Your reckoning has come, Shaw. The White King has returned!”

Despite the boasting, despite the implicit threats, Shaw looks completely unperturbed.

“You are no longer the White King, Pierce. You were conspiring against the Hellfire Club, and for that I removed you from your post.”

Now, Pierce gets truly angry, stabbing a metal finger in Shaw’s direction.

“That is not your call to make, Shaw! The Black King does not have the power to remove the White King from his position! And I did not conspire against the Hellfire Club. I simply sought to purify it of the tainted rabble that had infected it over the years! YOU are the threat to the Hellfire Club here, not ME. And tonight… tonight, the infection will finally be excised.”

Shaw looks more amused than anything else as he gazes around at the forces Pierce has brought to bear against him for a brief moment. When he looks back to his counterpart, he doesn’t seem at all worried.

“You haven’t brought enough men.”

Gnashing his teeth, Pierce snarls.

“Them? They’re just insurance. I don’t need them to deal with you. No, they’re just here to make sure no one interferes. I’m going to deal with you myself, Shaw. Right here, right now. My exalted science against your filthy mutation for all to see. Once and for all, all will know you for the pathetic piece of scum you are!”

Oh wow. That was… well, it was better than being stuck in a kill box as Pierce ordered his gunmen to open fire. But not by much. They were still surrounded, and while Natasha was more confident of her capacity for tanking bullets than she’d ever been before… if Pierce knew he was dealing with mutants tonight, there was no telling what sort of ammunition those rifles held.

Still, this was between Shaw and Pierce. They didn’t have to involve themselves… right? Natasha glances to Thaddeus, just to make sure they’re on the same page.

I don't think this is the best time to reveal himself just yet even if this would seem like the best time it would draw the unwanted attention that they don't need until it is appropriate

suspiciouscoffee

Wouldn't be a rich party without at least one feud I guess...

SpokenSoftly

All other considerations aside, jumping in here would just be out of character. We've got at least a decent track record of good sense when poontang isn't involved

Tsorov

I don't know how I want this situation to go. On one hand, taking out the black king would also threaten Emma, and Thad will have to intervene. On the other hand, he does nothihg, and the white king is crushed without problems, that could also be a problem as it strengthens the Blackl Kings position. And, if the Black King dies, the Black queen will have no reason to keep Thad alive, and I don't believe that Thad is already strong enough

Collar Spider

I mean, I don't want to do anything. But him just tanking bullets or punching someone through a wall isn't that special here. Like Shaw knows he's got super strength, he doesn't care because that's hardly worth anything. Also, was he intentionally using his luck powers or what.

VaticToxic

Donald about to get his ass beat, tbh, unless he has mutant power removing hands. Practically all energy can be used by Shaw, iirc. Really, though, stepping in would only go well if Thaddeus makes it seem like Donald isn't worth Shaw's time (which, really, he probably isn't), and asks Shaw to let "a White Pawn deal with this Fake King" or something.

Nanaya7Nights

I think it was passive His luck powers would deal with people that could be a problem for him. And trying to seduce his girl (even if Nat doesn't know it yet) would be a big problem.

Nanaya7Nights

Thaddeus shouldn't interfere, unless someone targets him, Emma or Nat. While he doesn't want to draw too much attention, acting in defence of Emma would emphasize her "control" over him and might help if Emma tries to have him take the position of White Knight in the future.

Phraxius

I'd say stay out of it unless Emma suggests intervening - she's no doubt got experience with coup attempts.

Smile Dip

Thaddeus is literally psychic right now, it'd be pretty easy for him to remain on the same page here.

shadowbadger

It's a terrible idea and will never win, but the evil gremlin part of my brain wants him to step in just to see what happens.

Collar Spider

Hmmm, thinking about how Thad could play off Nat being a Widow. Like if Shaw approaches them about it, could Thad be all like, "Oh I know, I keep her on a tight leash." I feel like Shaw would appreciate the sexist power play but he'd also be concerned about him being too strong, or controlling. Like, that seems like a dangerous route to go down, even if it's the only way to protect Nat. Actually, upon further thought, that's literally what Shaw is doing with Emma as his date. He knows she's dangerous and want to overthrow him, but he wants to fuck her so he's got her as his date to do a power play. So maybe that will endear him to Thad or just again make him more suspicious of him. Hard to say, could be a lose-lose situation for Thad.

JO LP

In previous chaptes Thaddeus has shown to have a good head on his shoulders. He has gotten in trouble not because he is impulsive but rather to keep others (read Laura) out of trouble or at least be at arms reach if she got in trouble. But he is not one to just jump into the fray without some factor to push him towards conflict. Here, unless Shaw or Forst were to address him directly and request his involvement, I don't see other reason for him to do so. Unless Pierce took Nat as hostage or something like that.

Rotaugur

I would like to know, just how pierce wants to kill shaw. I mean , there a quiet a few ways, i could think about, but will he use them? I mean, poison gas that is invisible should work against shaw, or a patch with a fast acting sleping agent that is absorbt throught the skin will also work. a mutation suppressor in combination with a few dozent bullets coukd also be effevtive, or a bullet out of vibranium should be imune against energy based defences. On the other hand, most forms of magig that are have a direct effect should be able to wound shaw, and aa device, that teleports an object into his body can cause enaugh damage,if it were to hit his brain , heart ot block his wind pipe, while a hit in the liver or kidney can be fatal, if he is not fast enaugh healed.

Alun Lewis

Gotta agree with the mob...it would be the wrong move for Thad to try and intervene unless Nat or Emma are in trouble. Especially if Pierce - had to take a moment to remind myself who that was and recall a version of him was a baddie in "Logan" - isn't afraid to take down a powerful mutant like Shaw.

redhawktiger

This is where that luck power not only comes in handy, but perhaps oversteps into truly absurd lol

Sith2go

Not intervening is obviously the smarter move. However i am a big fan of escalating.

Devon

awww.... nobody wants to interfere? Let Pierce and Shaw wail on each-other, but at least take out the extra guns...

Gamesempie

He needs to make an impression to gain supporters, but not in this way and show his hand and reveal himself as a potential threat. He needs to play this smart till he is prepared to rip his heart out.
