Hi fam!

We have another episode of Star Trek TOS today. Today's episode is Plato's Stepchildren. This episode showed, once again, that absolute power corrupts absolutely. This episode also brought us an amazing character in Alexander and the first black/white kiss on television!

What an historical episode!

I hope you enjoy my reaction to it!

This story is either gloriously camp; or embarrassingly OTT - or even both at the same time! It's certainly entertaining and memorable. The interracial kiss is the highlight, of course; and a justly famous scene. The producers were dreading the potential backlash - but, actually, there was none. They were deluged with letters of praise - even from people in the Deep South. Nonetheless, don't ignore Nurse Chappell and her spoken feelings for Spock either. Trivia: Speaking of Spock, the song that he sang was actually written by Leonard Nimoy. Barbara Babcock - she payed Philana, the evil wife/partner. You may also recognise her from her role as Mea in A Taste of Armageddon. In addition, she was the voice of the cat in Assignment Earth; and the voice (just a few episodes ago) of the Tholian (on the viewscreen.) She will feature in one more story this season, just in case you can't get enough of her (which ,clearly, Gene Roddenberry couldn't!) If she sounded well spoken, that's because she is. She was raised in Japan (Japanese is her first language); she studied at the universities of Lausanne (Switzerland) and Milan; and attended an elite private girls school in Connecticut. She had a prolific and highly successful career on TV (Dallas; Hill Street Blues; Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman - among many others) and is still with us, I'm happy to say, at 87. A final piece of trivia: I was wrong about the BBC banning 3 episodes of TOS. It was actually 4! (Miri; The Empath; Plato's Stepchildren....and one more). Their objection to this story? Scenes of humiliation. Surely....that was the whole point?!
