Aloha, Patrons!

And Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating!  I am grateful for this aloha-filled Patreon Community!

To spread a little ukulele joy this season (and to encourage you to get some extra uke practice 😉),  I'd like to invite all Patrons to participate in a virtual flash mob for the Christmas classic "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"!  Check out the Flash Mob Follow-Along video linked above, or click here: https://youtu.be/SyaaXY8RL60

In anticipation of this project, I taught "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" for this month's Beginner Live Jam.  If you're at the $10+ level, you can check out that lesson for more tips. With just 6 chords and a shuffle island strum, all levels can participate in this flash mob

As with last month's "Zombie Heart" flash mob (see the final video here), I invite you to get creative with the theme. If you have holiday decorations up, feel free to get them into the frame with you.  Costume pieces (santa hats, antlers, scarves, ugly sweaters!) are also encouraged, as well as including family members, roommates, and pets.  In fact, if you'd prefer not to play your ukulele "live" on camera, you can even just "rock around the Christmas tree" with your instrument and/or your family while playing the follow-along track on speakers -- no need to use headphones in that case.  I'd love to see some snowy scenes too!

If you're interested in participating, please submit your video by December 3.  Find more information below on how to submit, and please post any questions in the comments!

Happy rocking!  I look forward to seeing your creations!

xo cynthia.

How to Join the "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" Virtual Flash Mob:

Check out these performance and recording tips from 808 Uke Squad and 100 Days Community member Lien-Thanh Kratzke! Thanks, Lien!  She'll be helping to produce this video collaboration.

Guidelines for Recording:

1. Record a landscape (horizontal) video, ideally in festive costume pieces or festive surroundings.

2. Practice with one headphone - it takes some getting used to.  When recording your video, play the follow-along track on another device.  For instance, you may need to play on a laptop/TV or separate speaker while you record with your phone.  You want to capture only your audio in the video,  so that we can achieve a "virtual choir" effect.

3. Have fun!  If you make a mistake, smile and keep going.  Don't worry, since we're cropping together many performances, you'll blend in.  Happy energy is the most important thing to share.

How to Submit your Video

1. Preferred method - If you have a google account, submit your video here.

2. If you don't have a google account, please make sure your video file is titled with your name and location as you'd like them listed in the credits, and use the free website wetransfer.com to send the video.  Add the file, email to cynthialin.team@gmail.com, and hit the Transfer button.

Post questions in the comments below, or in our Patron Facebook group.  Thank you!!

Great fun! Do we have to sing the tune or can we add a few harmonies here and there? Thanks!

Wendy Kriegel

Wow! I can't believe it's Christmas! I'm going to try and do this! Happy Thanksgiving Cynthia and all patreons!

Allyn McColley

Can we lipsync the lyrics but still play a uke?

Jen Barnes

Happy Thanksgiving! I can already tell I’ll need to work on keeping my tempo consistent. What’s the BPM (ish)? Loved Zombie Heart!

Kirsten Richardson

Excited to do this! I’ve done a few virtual choirs but not yet with my uke! Putting up the tree tomorrow so I’ll record it then and have it in my background! 🎄

Cynthia Lin

hi allyn! sure, and if you don’t want to lip sync, you could just play uke and smile :)

Joe

Hello Cynthia,

Lisa Aman

Can't wait to practice Cynthia! thank you sweetie! 😊🥰🥰🥰

Andrew Taylor

Hey Cynthia i have a baratone ukelele is that the same as a low g ukelele . Are there strings you can buy for a baratone ukelele where you dont have to learn a new fingering pattern

Jenny Selig

Hi, Andrew. Baritone is not the same as low G, but I have heard that some people will string their ukuleles GCEA instead of the standard Baritone tuning, so that the chord shapes are the same as on, say, a tenor uke.

Andrew Taylor

Will the notes once strung be an ovtave lower or the same as a concert uke?

Andrew Taylor

So i really need to learn the prober figuring to use for that baratone if i prefer a lower sounding note

Emily Stehle

Love this song...been rockin' with it ever since I learned ukulele five years ago!

Emily Stehle

Andrew: a baritone is tuned to guitar. My husband has one and he has to play the baritone chords so it matches my concert or soprano ukes. When you're talking about low G, you're using a low G string on the GCEA uke. Found this: The baritone ukulele can be tuned with re-entrant D, G, B, E tuning as well as either G, C, E, A tuning system typically used on other ukuleles . This will require new strings (just the D string for the re-entrant DGBE and completely new strings for either GCEA tuning).

Emily Stehle

Yep, you should learn the right fingering for your instrument! Otherwise, what's the point?

Jenny Selig

Andrew, if it helps, the baritone uses the same chord shapes as GCEA tuned ukes. It's just that, for example, if you played 0003 (C shape for GCEA tuning) on a baritone, you'd be playing a G. You can see the shapes on charts like this: https://www.gotaukulele.com/2010/09/baritone-uke-chord-chart.html

I just submitted my video! A perfectionist streak and highly limited skills are a tricky combination but I finally got it "good enough". :) Thanks so much for doing this Cynthia, and for everything you're doing to keep us entertained in this crazy year!

Anne Simmons

All I can say is that Cynthia you make this look WAAAAAY easier than it is....

Jen Barnes

So fun! Tim Barnes just submitted our joint video. What a fun challenge!

Greg Stannard

Hey guess what? I submitted TWO...! One is reg uke and the other is the bass..! Let me know if that's a problem feel FREE to forget the bass omg. Pretty new at that. Love the project Cynthia...!!
