Good ol' exploration vs. exploitation. I think you can model them mathematically even in the real world through game theory based on some criterias and value systems. Finding the equilibrium point for number of different meals to order for a restaurant depends on how often you want to go there, its reputation, the price, the range. Our intuitions are doing what neural networks do, combine many criterias, fast, into one action. Curiosity is a very useful trait for living agents.
