Today's topic is "Overworked Designs"... (・∀・)ノ 

Do you love them, do you hate them...?

I personally am a fan of simple but striking designs, characters that look like a Christmas trees, covered from head to toe in accessories are not exactly my style.

I have two theories of how overdesigned characters are born.

1.- These days there are so many artists creating so many new characters that in order to stand out from the crowd you need to come with the most outrageous and outlandish design possible, this only so that people can remember how visually offended your design made them feel.

2.- People really don't know anything about characterization or visual cues.

Designing a swordsman:

Good example: A guy with a very jagged sword, covered in scars that show he has been in many battles, so he must be a really experienced warrior.

Bad example: A pretty boy with pointy hair carrying a huge ass sword swinging it like a kid with a stick at a piñata party.

Swords are cool, so the bigger the sword, the cooler the guy is.

The worst example of them all:

Swords are cool, so put them everywhere.

Three swords in each hand is not enough, he can still hold one between his teeth and another one between his butt cheeks.

He will fight like a retard making a total ass of himself and the art of swordsmanship all at the same time. That has to be at least just a little bit memorable... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

I've already forgot where I wanted to go with all of this, anyway.

I am not at all an expert in character design, but I share the idea that in terms of design "Less is more"

A good character design is one that can be quickly digested visually, does not need any extra context to be understood and more importantly that everything has a single specific point that cannot be erased from your mind, that particular detail in his hair or outfit that always comes to your mind when you think of that character.

Thats a good design...!
