Recently I'm trying to lean more towards heavily outlining the different elements during the inking process.

The most obvious part during this process is that your main figure has to be properly separated from the background and other elements with a thicker outline.

Everything within this first selection can even be monotonically inked and you might still consider your work properly done.

Things get a little trickyer when you get to order the hierarchy of the different elements within the same main figure. It all becomes more of a instinct thing, but at least as a personal rule I draw thick lines on everything I want to stand out and go thin on everything that is less important.

A nice clean lineart is not only good for getting a dynamic and interesting final lineart, it can help bring focus to specific elements of a composition, highlight your character and even save you some time during coloring as some elements just require of a small drop of ink to be considered as properly shaded.
