I'd introduce a xaren as something like a "truffle pig" for magic weapons, maybe miniaturized and kept in a cage by a rival party of adventurers rooting around an abandoned lair. Maybe the players want it for themselves, or they don't like how it's being treated. If the xaren acts like a dog begging for treats, play that up.

I think that's definitely one use that was envisioned for it, although you'd still need to find a supply of metal to feed it or just not have any magic weapons, since if you have enchanted metal and don't share it attacks you 80% of the time. And if you do feed it enchanted metal it will eventually get very tough. Miniaturising it would solve that problem, though!
