I think it was probably a reflection of all my players being culturally Christian that the gods were always quite distant when I played AD&D from the early 80s onwards. And it was generally left up to the player to interpret the word of Thor or Issek of the Jug. There was only ever one cleric in a party so issues of doctrine were an ecumenical matter.
