Checked out (2) Chan's Room compilations. I don't know if these are necessarily the best videos to get a feel for Chan and Chan's room, but I think I saw glimpses of what the show could be like. I did quite a bit of speculating on Chan's personality and the way he interacts with the world in this reaction -- and as a result -- it kind of made me reflect on my own personality/communication as well. I go back and forth a bit on my thoughts/feelings re: Bang Chan as you'll see. Hope you enjoy.

I hope you watch a full one to get a better look

Oh my gosh this is the best surprise! I've always wanted you to get to know Channie, he's such an important person to me and honestly every STAY! Hope you react to the ATE intro that dropped yesterday, it's very interesting and I would love to see you analysis because the boys have such a mature and different vibe!

Interesting reaction! My feeling with Chan is that the *full* extent of his personality is something he actively chooses to keep quite private (which tbh, fair enough, fans can be scary and hyper-fixate on every word and action). But imo even so, what always shone through in Channie’s room was how he was always so genuinely willing to interact and communicate. Like…creating that space and taking the time every single week to show up, share pieces of himself and just hang out is something I really admire. I think it’s also why so many stays are so attached to Chan in a way that’s different from the other members (for better or worse) — like maybe it’s a recognition that the “real” and genuine pieces he showed of himself on Channie’s room were really special and kinda precious. The compilations you watched are definitely more for fans who have already seen full eps though — the whole typical Channie’s room experience used to be more music focused, where he’d chat, play kpop songs, and just talk. Some fun eps you might want to check out include the ones where he talks about the music production process or something like this: https://youtu.be/ejaMdLbI2VI?si=4rSU5C8jLMyu2IGy It’s quite a lovely (short-ish) snapshot of 2022-ish Channie’s room that’s just chill and chatty — the vibe of a weekly catch-up lol

Love that you just got a chan’s room speedrun lmaooo🫡😫I agree that his personality is a bit performative sometimes, but I also think it’s natural to him? Like how theatre kids are so obviously theatre kids, Chan’s kind of just a natural performer tbh. And yes he’s totally a nerdy, dorky, loser (I say affectionately). There’s a smartness to him that makes him feel like he’s on a bit of a different planet sometimes, but it’s something a lot of people love too. If you look for it, there are for sure a lot of parallels between Chan and Han actually. Anyway, his personality really does go from spectrum to spectrum sometimes— I kind of see it as a clash between his Australian and Korean cultures, because the standards and norms are so so different. His brain does not shut off, ever. Chan gives 120% of effort into everything, literally everything, so it’s not surprising how hard you can see him trying to filter, but not be too filtered, and make people happy but not cross his boundaries—which yes, if he’s bothered about something we do hear about it, he’s very very direct about it and it has pissed people off a time or 500. He’s one of the few idols that will shut down fans or tell us off a bit, which is maybe why he lets unimportant things slide if he doesn’t really care lol. He’s actually under fire quite often in the media for speaking his mind and being “too honest.” Always about silly things too where if he weren’t in the kpop industry, people wouldn’t blink. People beg for honesty and transparency, and then attack the idols that do that. Him having a weekly schedule for so long has people who don’t like him watching his lives and targeting him to nitpick what he did hoping for scandals. It finally got to the point last year where he had to halt the show (lots of speculation on whether the company cut it or if he made the decision) and after doing weekly lives for 200+ episodes, it’s gone on hiatus for over a year now which is such a shame. If it ever feels like people are too defensive over him, it’s not you probably, stays are just traumatized over all the shit that’s gone on over people using him as a punching bag over the years. Watching a lot of it happen in real time has been so vile. Anyway, thank you for this loved it as always. The new intro video just came out which is always a pleasure if you’re interested in that analysis. Also loved your message at the beginning, the community is so good and I’m always so thankful for our community here🤍

Thank you for your reaction! These complimations were definitely more for silly entertainment, which nothing wrong with that because we all love that Chan is a bit of a dork lol. Though he does have a lot of serious moments as well. We call him our therapist a lot because he can get deep and talk about mental health and similar things. Boundaries was an interesting topic. Chan is very much a self-sacrificing person so I think he can be a bit softer with boundaries towards himself, but there have been times when Chan has come on and thoroughly scolded the whole community for starting fights online and other things like that. Whenever some drama online would happen Stays would be so fearful about being scolded by Chan come Sunday lol.

a really cool look at another side to chan is to watch his latest appearance on young k's show https://youtu.be/gd8pT9IxTfw?si=w_vC_pnZXE2-OtPj young k is a senior to chan in a band under the same company JYP. and they've been close for a veerrryy long time and it was sooo interesting to see how chan acts when he is younger in conversation, since he's always been the oldest in skz and in a position of seniority as leader

You should check out their Two Kids Show (a little different than Two Kids Rooms)!

Chan is such an interesting character. He has a really special place in the hearts of a lot of fans and I think it falls into place when you understand his whole story. Chan moved to Korea as a trainee at 13 and he was the baby of the trainees. But his 7 years as a trainee was rough, the people he grew up with either left or debuted ahead of him, and at one point every other trainee bar him was cut from the company. It was such a high pressure cut throat environment to grow up in and the older he got the more it seemed like maybe he never would debut. But then when he was about 19/20 JYP took one of the biggest risks on him and did something that had never been done in kpop before- they let Chan pick trainees to form into a team, write the music, and lead the group. Typically there will be a whole team of company professionals working on making a team, checking skills, developing the concept etc.. Chan handpicked all the Stray Kids members and then they had to do a survival show where the members, their songs, everything was tested- and the consequence of disappointing JYP was members would be cut. It was a brutal watch. Chan was suddenly not just responsible for his own career but the futures of all the other members- he was sleeping 5 hours a night maximum, his mental health was a mess, and he had to be quite strict with them all to make sure they would get through it. Then after debut things didn't go very well for the first couple of years, there was a lot of hate and some difficult events including an original debuting member choosing to leave the group which Chan apologised for as his failure. Chan wrote the song Social Path about his experience and the chorus 'gave up my youth for my future' says it all really. Chan has always been 100% professional and 100% dedicated to making sure he is doing the best for his team. However, thankfully, after they became a team of 8 early on the personal relationships of Stray Kids seemed to really strengthen and develop and Chan slowly learned to let go. In the past couple of years especially the other members have been telling Chan to trust them and let himself relax a little. Chan has credited Stray Kids with probably saving his life and teaching him what love is. Whilst he is very professional an 'on' when doing interviews or in leader mode, he does have a very goofy childish side- it especially comes out when he's around his seniors (the Young K interview someone linked above is a fantastic example of this). When Chan is just with Stay in Chan's Room or a concert he seems to relax a little and play. When is comes to boundaries he actually had that down to an art. Chan has a talent for being able to say things that sound benign on the surface but if you've known him long enough have a second meaning. He's used this before to kind of scold fans when they do something he doesn't like and he will come out straight and tell us if he is upset with us about something. It's incredibly impressive. Chan's Room has been on a break for the past year due to an incident where someone took something he said and it got used against another group and became a big drama where Chan felt the need to post an apology to help end it. We don't know the details of what happened but Chan didn't go live again for a long time, until very recently, and he was clearly a little nervous about it but seemed to settle into it again. I think Chan feels things very deeply and Chan's Room was his most vulnerable place but it's very hard to walk that line whilst being an incredibly famous professional artist. There is another Chan's Room compilation that has longer clips you might be interested in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpvVgu8I5R0 . This editor makes really good compilations about Stray Kids and the members, it's a channel worth checking out if you're ever looking for that kind of thing. Oh- and it's okay. I (and I'm sure most others) know you're being genuine and have love for SKZ. I really enjoy seeing you discover more and more, it's a stage we've all been through. (Note: 'Community' was the SKZ Community on the bubble app where fans could post messages members could read if they were part of the official fan club. It's now changed to the 'Fans' app, but most SKZ members will use this to talk to fans when live over using youtube/Instagram live chats which can attract some haters. When Chan's Room started they used an app called 'vlive' to do livestreams which tended to be mostly used by fans so the chat was fairly safe to use but vlive closed a couple of years ago so they moved to more public platforms for livestreams.)

This video is the best for seeing the real Chan, but I think it’s best to watch privately for your own understanding rather than film content for it. https://youtu.be/5vtnfErsRVg?si=kzsOB4HiPb0h9vPG

“Chan is trying to be nice” Agree 100% When I watch videos of him in recording sessions, concert speeches and even old versions of him (5-6 years ago) he is completely different from these compilations. Ofc he can have serious modes, but I can't believe in this drastic transformation. He is very straightforward, doesn't beat around the bush, he just “changes” his personality while doing Channies room since he knows who is the primary audience there + he is an extremely controlling type of individual. Just want to share it lol

Here is my Chan’s Room rec where he reacts to Streetlight and talks about his difficult experiences. https://youtu.be/rdMOkX8oTWU?si=C46KAJs44egy6HDB

And here is Chan in a haunted house being totally real because he was so scared. https://youtu.be/U10Ew1KyQvo?si=EFt43TZ3ClTGNyfe

I think you are right about his self-consciousness, but the real, serious moments can be found. They just aren’t in a compilation video. In the older 2 kids room episodes he seems to have been a bit more real and serious than in the 2022 eps. The Stray Kids survival show pre-debut shows him at his most desperate and on-edge too.

Aliya

I've been watching you and Chan for a while and one similarity between both of you is that you are fully aware of who r u talking to and what people expect from you, so you are good at adapting ur thoughts and words since that's important for I guess Other guys in SKZ have more boundaries with STAY than Chan. He even did a Vlive from his personal room, home in Australia, while seungmin/changbin answer to the basic questions from fans, I can feel the set boundaries from them. +chan said he watches all of the content fans make. Even him breaking down at the concert “I will protect you all!” - at that moment I was convinced that for him it all not just fan-job-acting-superficial stuff, it it something more and deeper

Aliya

“He doesn't want to be perceived as too harsh” Oh, that's 100% true, now it makes sense. Chan was “scary” before, members also shared how he was like a scary older guy who's been in the company for a while, and in 2kidsroom, chan asked Felix if he likes old version of chan or recent. He was serious when asking that, so I guess he wants to be perceived as someone nice, and avoids harsh stuff to forget(?) abt his past self + maintaining a certain image, yeah

dani monique

-I will say there’s a reason why we no longer have Chan’s room. Over the past few years I think he does show a lot of different sides to him. I wonder if you could understand him more if you see him from the other members pov.

Aliya

“Internal battle in chan” - totally makes sense omg. Chan shared that he always was the youngest in the company, so he was always a maknae before SKZ. There are older guys in other k pop groups that talk about chan as younger bro, and how adorable he was. And when he made a debut with SKZ being a leader (and the oldest) a huge responsibility fell oh him, so he had to adapt, he couldn’t be a “cute lil bro” anymore + after skz debut he was taking care of younger members, and since now everyone has grown up, he can loosen up. In 2kidsroom changbun shared how Hyunjin finds Chan’s love and affection burdensome but it was a long time ago. I vividly remember how Seungmin or Felix shared that “everyone is more independent now, so u can relax (?) a bit”

Aliya

“People are often a mirror of pros and cons of our own” True, while choosing a bias in SKZ I analyzed which traits of each member I like and I don't, and as a result I found that I avoid Han and IN (I still love them 🤣 ❤️) because I see some of my personality in them, and how I liked seungmin and changbin because I wanted to have that level of confidence and ambition as both of them

When you were talking about seeing a not so PG side of Chan, you were seeing who STAY calls Christopher (he'll even say "Christopher what have you done?" regarding some more mature performances like Red Lights). Christopher happens to be a BIG flirt with STAY through Lives and on Bubble. He's fun to hang out with. Last Live a couple weeks ago a STAY got him real good and his ears turned bright red.

Christin

I fully agree on the internal battle. He was always the youngest and probably fully prepared to be the maknae of a group. then he became the leader but still had someone older in the group, and that changed too. The way I read him is as someone who is comfortable in his leader side but letting his playful/ immature side coming out more and more. Plus, as someone who is autistic, I see a lot of that in him too, which makes him make more sense to me.

Interesting thought on how him being performative is almost natural to him. I see what you’re saying — I think for some “theatre kid” types it’s hard to shut off. Thx for the info and glad you enjoyed the reaction!

Jacqui

I love this episode, from when he was in Australia. It’d be cool to see how he interacts with his sister.

I'd love to see you react to the new interview with Seungmin and I.N. I believe it shows a different side to them both, and you can really see their dynamic. https://youtu.be/W67t4chfq9o?si=D02wykN0wlRQjQ31

You should check out Bang Chan’s interview with Young K. Suddenly he goes from the oldest leader to the goofy maknae and it’s really endering and a side you have not seen from him before. Link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gd8pT9IxTfw&pp=ygURQmFuZyBjaGFuIHlvdW5nIGs%3D

Hey ik u haven’t watched a sidemen video in awhile but they came out with a documentary earlier this year on Netflix. Unfortunately they only released it on the UK Netflix but I found a link from a YouTube channel that uploaded the whole thing.. I think the doc shows a lot about who each of them are as a person and it would be fun to hear your thoughts and opinions. Sorry you were having a rough time. Thanks for this reaction. I haven't seen any Chan's Room either so this was all new for me. I definitely agree with you about the feeling of knowing that you could or you will fall hard into something but it's not QUITE the right time yet. I've been there a lot!

Eileen

I hope you do some full episodes, I would like to see you react to them with full context!

Carla Midnight

Uuuh if you want to see one full episode here is one of my favourites maybe it's a bit long but idk i think you may enjoy it https://youtu.be/KftEednNFWU?si=zVaZlFrLQuemaenP

He's in a very difficult spot. Fans want him to be genuine, but the company has so many strict rules about what he can say and how he should act. AND additionally theres so much responsability - so many staff members and the other kids are affected by his choices. Everyone would be a bit hard to read I think. And there is a reason we don't have Chan's Room anymore - he was a bit too honest for the companys like. It's a shame.
