I've never watched an episode, but see a lot of reactors covering it. Can someone sell me on the anime?

Joshua

Fantasy, food and friendship. But seriously I'm rarely the one to literally laugh out loud when watching an anime. But this show hits most of its punch lines.

in their discussion, they seem to have forgotten that in episode 1 it explained the rumor of how if someone beats the lunatic mage, they'd become the new ruler. Then the dude turned to dust

For me this anime came out of left field, when I tried it on a whim similar to Apothecary Diaries and got me hooked just as fast. It is about fantasy dungeon exploration with pretty cool worldbuilding. There is a lot of cooking, humor and friendship stuff, while we slowly learn more about the world, which I find very satisfying to watch, but that might not be everyone's cup of tea. I'd suggest trying it and if you don't enjoy the characters, humor, dungeon and cooking within 3 episodes, it's probably not worth it for you. Even though I find the worldbuilding and fantasy stuff later on really awesome, if you cannot connect with characters in a show, you should probably drop it sooner rather than later and not struggle through "until it gets good" or whatever.

My favorite thing about this anime is that it delves into detail about the fantasy world ecosystem and its monsters. And the author is extremely creative with a lot of it. TBH the first 2 episodes are kinda whatever, but by ep 3 I was hooked. I know a few people who said the same thing and dropped it but after encouraging them to keep watching, they also said they loved this show. So I highly recommend giving at least the first 3 episodes a watch

So in some ways - minor spoiler - the anime takes the full 12-13 episodes of the first cour to get going. The first ~13 are great and re-watch well too, but for a relatively lighthearted anime it just takes a bit longer to get to develop everything in a satisfying way. I guess another way to put it is it tries a quite different approach to its story telling from all the gory and dark anime you might be used to and whether or not it works as well as it does for some probably depends a bit on how much you enjoy the first cour, but if you do find yourself liking the well-developed characters the anime earns its keep by the end.

Doesn't matter. The show reiterates it when it's relevant again anyway.

Other replies already talked about the actual anime and they present good points... so here's a curve ball via production standpoint: Studio Trigger rarely ever adapts a manga and they're mostly anime originals (ever since Gainax days). And this is one of the very few exceptions. Studio Trigger is one of the best and most iconic anime studios in JP and has a very recognizable style. Quality is never really a question when it comes to them. It don't matter if the anime they made is a 10/10 or just a 5/10, it's pretty much guaranteed that the production quality is always topnotch. And now that they're adapting a manga, it honestly turned out pretty great. Not to mention, dragons and monsters beautifully animated in 2D tickles my pickle. Also, for a more fun and light-hearted anime, this can get pretty dark and even gory. Which surprised me a little, but I love it.
