Strange Case- Thank you once again for another fantastic reaction for a fantastic episode, Travis!! I really love this episode too!! Even more than I expected I would. Not that I expected to not like it, because I really love the original story of Jekyll and Hyde. But until this episode, Jekyll and Hyde have only been just okay characters within this show. At least when I watched these first four episodes for the first few times. These characters have most certainly grown on me more and more, the more I have watched this show. Especially Mr. Hyde, thanks to Sam Witwer, whom I love as an actor in a number of shows! And now... I too was shocked that they are both killed off so early on this season when I first watched this season as it aired on television. And now I am sad, because I have grown to love these characters. Again... Especially Mr. Hyde. He and Jekyll deserve more than just six episodes for their story, and I would have loved to see more with them both. But with this being said... I do absolutely love how their story plays out overall! Now... I suspected ahead of time that in order to defeat Hyde, Jekyll would have to die too. However, I feel that the twist between these two characters within this show is really fantastic! I didn't really realize that Dr. Jekyll would turn out to be the greater villain, given that Hyde has been one of the main villains of this season so far. I know that this is how their original story from the classic novel plays out. That Jekyll was equally as bad as Hyde comes to be as well. However, in most movie adaptations where Jekyll and Hyde are characters, Dr. Jekyll is usually portrayed to be a good man, while Hyde is the villain of their story. So, this is actually how I suspected their characters to be here in Once Upon a Time too. In spite of Jekyll being a dark character within the classic novel, and in other shows and movies created from the novel too. Needless to say... Their deaths within this episode are really fantastic!! I love how their story within this episode plays out!! To answer a few of questions or any confusion most fans of this show have... First... Dr. Jekyll's first name in the original story... The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde, is indeed Henry. So, it's good that this show's creators kept his name here in Once Upon a Time the same, as it should be. It may be strange that there are now three Henrys in this show, but it makes sense. Because the creators didn't want to change his first name. It wasn't a necessary detail they felt needed changing. Second... Robert Carlyle actually needed to cut his hair for another role he took on at the same time he was filming this season of Once Upon a Time. So, he and the writers chose to write a reason for Rumple wanting to cut his long hair off. The same hair length that Rumple has had since we were first introduced to him back in season one's Pilot episode. And I love that his reason for wanting to cut his hair is because Rumple is struggling so much with his guilt and the mistakes he's made over the years with Belle and his sons, that he can no longer look at himself in the mirror with the same long hair that he has worn for so long now. As is revealed to us the viewers by Belle in the ending of this episode. Absolutely brilliant! Third... Dr. Jekyll's and Mr. Hyde's world they live in is not actually the London here in our world... in the Land Without Magic. It is not the same place or time period where Wendy, John, and Michael within the Peter Pan story are from. If you remember back to season one's episode... Hat Trick, Jefferson scolds Emma for her audacity to believe that our world is the only world in existence, and that there are many realms out there. Some that have magic, some that don't have magic, and some that need magic. And in season four's episode... Sympathy For the De Vil, Isaac... the former Author before Henry, talks to Cruella about how she is from just one of the many realms of story. That her world exits in a completely separate realm split off from the Enchanted Forest. A realm known as 1920s England. According to the site, Once Upon a Time wiki... Jekyll and Hyde are from another separate realm simply known as Victorian England. Both England realms being without magic. Fourth... The reason for the small side story with Snow teaching her students such as she does, isn't necessary. However, it's meant to show us that Snow has learned from Jasmine. That she needs to teach her students differently from how she always taught them back when she was cursed in season one. Because their world has changed so much since their time trapped under the curse, and because everyone learns lessons differently. And her lesson with shooting an arrow, isn't a way for her to teach her kids how to solve Newton's law as seen earlier in the episode, but simply a new kind of way to teach them a different lesson. This side storyline is simply to show us Snow getting back into teaching, and finding happiness in doing so. Not a necessity to the overall story arc within this episode, but it's a cute and happy storyline to help pull us away from the heaviness of the true story arc. And fifth... I do not believe that the creators and writers planned to have Hyde and Jekyll killed off so soon. I believe they wanted and expected them to last longer. I may be wrong about this. But I suspect their original plan had these two characters lasting for at least a few more episodes. Until at least the midseason finale maybe. However, I believe that they may have changed their plans to keep them on longer, because the fans of this show weren't really a big fan of either character back when this show first aired on television. And since they had failed to write major villains that most of this show's fans cared much for in season five... Arthur and Hades, they most likely felt that they would listen more to us, the fans, and end Hyde's and Jekyll's story arc sooner than they wanted to. Personally... I actually love Hyde a lot, as well as Jekyll too. I especially love the actor who plays Hyde... Sam Witwer, and how both actors played these roles. So, I am sad that once again... Two villains I actually do like, despite most other fans of this show hating them, were killed off too early. I hope these answers for you, help, Travis. :) And now... I absolutely love, love, love that it is Killian who defeats Jekyll, and therefore Hyde too, in order to protect Belle! And both Jekyll and Hyde get their just desserts! :) And now Rumple should most certainly be indebted to Killian for saving his wife and unborn son. However, we both know that he won't ever do anything for Killian out of gratitude. He certainly owes Killian now. Also... It's too bad that the seashell Killian gives to Belle breaks. Hopefully, Emma or Regina can repair it so that Belle can keep connected to Killian for when he isn't around. Side note... I am a little disappointed that there isn't a scene, or even a brief moment between either Killian and Emma, or Killian and Belle, showing these women check to make sure that he is alright. Killian has after all just killed two men. And while you don't really see his face afterwards, in the background of the moment just after Hyde dies while Gold and Regina are talking, you very briefly see Killian appear upset by this turn of events. I'm sure Killian has no qualms about killing Jekyll and Hyde after all they've done. Yet as the good man Killian is, he would feel badly for having to take a life and being unable to save Jekyll, who even though he had given into his own darkness, I do believe Jekyll himself was trying to become a better man. At least until he killed Mary out of anger within his past, and now again until he began to threaten Belle. But more importantly... Killian knows that Emma, Regina, and the Charmings needed Jekyll's help. Emma has sought out Hyde's help with what Killian knows is troubling her, even though he doesn't know what is troubling her because she refuses to confide in him. And Regina has needed Jekyll's help with the serum that she hoped to use on the Evil Queen so she could defeat her. Now more so than ever, given that she now knows the only other way without the serum is to kill herself. So, I believe that Killian would be feeling guilty for killing these two villains. And he deserves to have a moment where he's comforted and assured that he's done nothing wrong. Next... I actually foresaw Mary's death coming long before she was killed, the first time I watched this episode when it first aired. And I really love the revelation that it's actually Jekyll who kills her by pushing her out the window upon learning that she and Hyde have fallen in love, instead of Mary falling in love with him... Jekyll, like Jekyll planned and hoped for. I actually really feel really badly for Hyde in this moment, and all throughout their backstory within this episode. Hyde had been the one who really loved Mary. Not Jekyll. It is like Rumple and Mary said... Jekyll was all brain, with no heart. And he didn't make enough of an effort to show his love or passion, whereas Hyde did. And Mary loved Hyde for this. So, in spite of their romance being so briefly seen and established, I understand Mary and Hyde falling in love with one another. And I really love this twist in the story!! :) Now, as for Regina's storyline and how the show has revealed that in order for the Evil Queen to be killed, Regina has to die as well... I absolutely love this twist and revelation as well!!! So good! I sort of saw this reveal coming as well, and yet it still came unexpectedly for me. And I love seeing Killian appear to save Belle, and that in him doing so, he is forced to kill Jekyll, and therefore winds up killing Hyde as well! I really love that upon Killian doing so... We discover that the only way for the heroes to kill the Evil Queen, is for Regina to die also. So not good, but I love this twist! As for Gold's storyline within this episode... He is such a jerk throughout this episode! Towards Belle, Regina, Hyde, and Jekyll, before he learns he has gone after Belle to get revenge on him for Mary's death and bringing out Hyde. It is really rotten of Rumple to trap Belle on the Jolly Roger, even if it was meant to try to keep her safe. However, his actions only put Belle in even worse danger than before. Thank goodness for Killian!!! Also... I actually really do like his new short hairstyle, even though I still like his original style better. I didn't really like this new haircut on him the first time I watched this episode. And yet it's grown on me the more I've watched this season over the years. The short cut really does look good on him. And in a weird way, it actually makes Gold appear more evil. I'm glad we'll continue to have Rumpelstiltskin with his longer hair in the backstory scenes at least. Anyways... Gold really should have known that Hyde was smart, and wouldn't have left the extra serum in Jekyll's hands. Talk about gullible. Killian really didn't just save Belle, but Gold too. So, technically Rumple owes Killian double. And then... I really enjoy the school scenes with Snow, Henry, and Jasmine. I especially like the first scene when Violet appears and kisses Henry. They're cute together. Even if Henry and Violet aren't in this episode for more than a few minutes. And now... We've been introduced to Princess Jasmine too! Yay!! I really love Jasmine, who is actually one of my absolute favorite Disney Princess within the classic animated Disney movies. And I absolutely love the actress chosen to play her... Karen David. She's fantastic!! Both as Jasmine, and in many other roles in shows and movies too. I really love the mysterious final scene between Jasmine and the Oracle as well, and I love that they're now working together to try to find Aladdin, who is revealed to possibly be in Storybrooke somewhere. Marvelous!! And I absolutely love, love, love the animated Disney movie, Aladdin!! So, I am absolutely happy that Aladdin and Jasmine, as well as Jafar, have been brought into Once Upon a Time at last!! :) Like I've mentioned above... I really wish that there would have been at least one scene between Killian and Emma within this episode. It is wonderful to have the fatherly concern from Charming in the beginning over Hook moving in with his daughter. Although, I thought he was past all that. His distrust in Killian and hatred of pirates, I mean. Not to mention that David also calls him, "that pirate", which is a bit hurtful I thought. Nonetheless... I love this breakfast scene between Emma, David, Snow, and Henry. I love seeing them act as a family, and seeing Snow and Charming act as parents to Emma, even though they are the same age. So sweet! :) And lastly... The first scene between Killian and Belle shows us that Killian is ready with his only trunk to move in with Emma, which I love! And I love the tiny detail that Killian doesn't have much to move at all. I knew that he wouldn't have much to move. Killian may have pillaged and plundered in his all days as a pirate. However, the Jolly Roger has always been his only real treasured possession. So, I really appreciate this little detail shown to us regarding the true things he values. Emma, and the Jolly Roger. Thank you very much once again for a fantastic reaction, Travis! I am so excited for many more reactions from you for Once Upon a Time to come!! :) Sincerely, Heidi
