During her travels and staying in high end hotels, Caroline has learned that looking elegantly dressed and rifling through her purse on any guest floor she can frequently get the front desk to give her a room key to replace the one she "lost" for the room of any rich man she has scouted out in the building.

Peter was aware of this tendency and laid in wait since he knew "his wife" had just been at the front desk asking for a replacement key for his room. When he got back to his room he prepared himself for her sneaky arrival.
