this arc covers light novel 4, which was skipped the first time around. The original anime adapted LN 1,2,3, and 5. One reason people suspect they went with a remake instead of a new season is that skipping this arc can make things messy down the line

I won't spoil anything, as I don't know if anything included in the original series is canon, but the end of it wasn't very good. That last arc didn't feel contiguous and the plot felt like they took a look at all the previous arcs and blended those together. As I said, I don't know if that's in the light novel, but I hope it's completely made up story for the anime. Anyways I'm exited, as it seems like things won't be concluded in this season. We were teased with Holo in a snowy setting. And we're not close to getting to Yoitsu, so there's still enough content left for a second season, at least 12 or possibly 24 more episodes. As for the current episode, the mystery is still up. Father Franz was collecting stories about pagan gods, and the village is worshipping a snake-god. There must have been more to this snake god than it first seems, to cause the priest stay in the village and actually do favors for the village. It's like he was protecting the village even though he was part of the church. Elsa was probably trained by the priest enough that she could take over when he passed away, but she wasn't recognized as the successor by the church. So as Lawrence said, she must have received some good news in that regard on the previous day, after Holo and Lawrence visited her. Still, we don't know why she's doing this, other than maybe in respect to Father Franz.

The way they ended it in the original anime was weird. It ended on volume 5; but volume 5 and 6 are two parts of an arc so you never got the pay off
