You'd think Mari would act similar do to her crazy & mischievous personality in the anime series but she seems more scared and confused in this one. Wonder if that will change in the future.

The fault is in the combination of characters. Misato in this case is the dominant part in this and Mari shouldn't be a enabler/partner kind of character to make this work. Or not, maybe another kind of plot would display both characters better? I confess Mari was used here because Misato needed a victim. But I believe when they move to Kaiju form Mari will have space to breath.
