Yet another amazing movie, I really enjoyed it. It's definitely a different experience than Your Name becaue it's covering very real and serious topics that can be very relatable.

BTW One Piece episodes 112 and 113 will be up in about 45 minutes.

I get that this is a first time viewing and people wont have the emotional distance to view the story from that angle but I'd recommend thinking a bit more about Ueno's role in this. It's easy to fall in this good/bad trap of excusing every action and responsibility Shoko has and hating Ueno for trying to fix things her way - this is kinda the point the story tries to make clear too, people don't see Shoko as a human, just as a device for their personal goals. Ishida completely ignores his own issues in favour of Shoko for 3/4 of the movie, basically projecting everything positive on her and everything negative on his past. The amusement park scene is showing this clearly - he is genuinely happy with this big friend group because he is living his life with people that like him and not because he is taking care of someone else. Ueno is right that he is acting out of guilt, to him it is his moral responsibility to make up for past mistakes. By thinking this way he can't let go of his old self - he will always be the guy that has to be ashamed to be even alive and walk with his head down to repent for a sin that is long forgotten. Ueno is also right with saying that Shoko was the reason why his life is miserable right now (nobody is putting blame here just stating the facts - but it's a fine nuance most people just ignore). After hearing the recording from the ferris wheel Ishida never even considers the words of Ueno (letting go of the past and start new) and neither does Shoko - she falls back into her victim role just as him. A decision that ends up almost killing them both. I guess my point is that people have a hard time seeing the story from the point of view of a character like Ueno, which is a shame because the whole emotional maturity is lost in favour of looking for an enemy.

I can appreciate how well written Ueno's character is and I'm glad we have a character like that in the movie. The thing I don't get is what did Shoko do to Ueno? All I remember was all of them bullying Shoko because of her disability. Ishida probably did act out of guilt at first but he really felt sorry and wanted to fix things, he realised that he did awful things, he grew up, he changed. His life is not miserable because of Shoko but because of his own actions from the past, I don't even think it's fair to consider that it's somehow Shoko's fault other than her existance... I don't remember Ueno apologizing at all to Shoko for bullying her and yet she does it again when they meet, even if they are like 18 almost, she's acting the same. I even started sensing jealousy from her. Also getting pyshical and hitting Shoko while she is apologizing for her very own existence doesn't help at all. People who get abused/bullied tend to apologize for every little thing and in psychology it's literally called ''apologizing for existing''. The ending of the movie slightly hinted that there is a chance that Ueno can at least stop hating Shoko for her existance and I would like that but they way movie ended, I kinda didn't change my opinion on Ueno that much.

I just finished the manga of this and it's a 10/10, I'm scared to watch this movie because I don't see how a movie can adapt a 62 chapter manga. Anyways I 100% recommend the manga of this and I will watch when I'm ready 🙂

Nice! I have to read manga as well, I've been told that certain character that I really really didn't like is redeemed much better in manga haha. I didn't see any problems with the pacing of the movie, it's really great imo.
