There were actually three versions of the film screened in theaters when it was released (A B and C versions). People went back to see it multiple times to see all the versions.

Yeah, that's why they have to repeat some things in the 2nd and 3rd ending, because the original audiences would only have seen one of them. On the DVD you can pick if you want to see all 3 or have it pick one for you at random.
