And we reach Weiss' last chapter...so long to our frosty queen with a heart of gold!

***

To those living in this corner of Remnant, Vale was commonly called the Firestorm Kingdom.  According to rumor, fearsome firespitters lit up the night skies with plumes of flame while volatile windwalkers whipped the smoke into destructive cyclones that tore through the streets.

Like most rumors, those weren’t worth the breath used to spread them.  As Weiss had learned over the past few months, Vale wasn’t nearly as fearsome as its moniker suggested.  The firespitters were fiery but in a passionate, lively way.  And the windwalkers...well, the windwalkers breezed through life with far more mirth than volatility.  Whenever the two opposing sparks crossed paths, a whirlwind of frenetic activity ensued.

As the energetic kingdom grew nearer, Weiss sighed and glanced across the cabin at James, who had finally relaxed after several days of travel.  He was still on alert, as always, but he wasn’t quite as...rigid...as he’d been while they passed through the Valley.

“Almost there,” Weiss commented, briefly drawing his light green gaze.

“It’s nice to be back,” he replied while returning his attention to the kingdom looming before them.  His voice was so low that he could have been speaking to himself, but Weiss chuckled at the stoic response.

“You can say that you miss her,” she pointed out, smiling when he again glanced her way.  “I won’t be offended.”

For a split second, James looked as if he might admit what Weiss already knew to be true.  It wasn’t meant to be though, as his gaze soon returned to Vale.

“Queen Rose is a breath of fresh air in this stale world,” he spoke toward the carriage’s window.  “A beacon of hope that peace and prosperity can coexist.”

“Yeah, I miss her too…” Weiss admitted softly, watching Vale’s walls loom taller with every passing minute. Her heart skipped and her knee jittered in anticipation of seeing Ruby again.  They hadn’t been apart for long, but a single night without Ruby was long enough.  If the circumstances hadn’t been important and timely, Weiss never would have agreed to it.  Unfortunately, the circumstances were important and timely.

“It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen you nervous.”

The comment drew her gaze back to James, who nodded to her jittering knee.

“Because I’ve learned to hide it better.”

James nodded but didn’t press for details.  If he had, Weiss would admit that she also didn’t get nervous like she used to.  Now that she knew what Atlas needed from her, and knew that she was capable of delivering it, she hardly suffered from the same debilitating self-doubt.  Ruby would never accept credit for helping Weiss find her way, but...it was all thanks to Ruby.

Weiss’ knee resumed bouncing as she thought about the wonderful, spirited queen who she couldn’t wait to have back in her arms.  Noticing the outlet of energy, James sent her a knowing look.

“Are you having doubts?”

“Of course not.  I love her more than anything in this world.  I’ve never once doubted that, and I never will.”

A small smile flickered across his lips before he nodded and let the subject drop.  He enjoyed it whenever Weiss made grand, irrevocable statements like that, but that didn’t make them any less true.  She never could have imagined falling so madly in love with one of the Queens of Vale, those dual figures who were a constant backdrop in her father’s tirades.  But it happened and, as with everything else, her father couldn’t have been more wrong. He must be turning in his grave knowing Weiss’ plans for her and Ruby’s future.  Although…he had probably turned in his grave more than a few times by now, what with Ruby living in Atlas and serving as an integral part in the kingdom’s new direction.

“You still approve?” Weiss asked, suddenly worried that James brought it up because he was questioning her resolve.  That worry disappeared when he nodded and said, “Of course, My Queen.”

Reassured, Weiss smiled and lightly clasped her hands in her lap.  She understood that he used the term to express certainty, respect, or approval, but it still filled her with a sense of pride.  She’d done something to earn that respect.  It might not have been bold, flashy, or history-making, but...he believed in her just like Ruby did.

“Ruby and I are lucky to have you in our lives,” she added.

“As am I, My Queen.”

Once James fell silent, Weiss sighed and leaned back in her seat while their caravan approached Vale’s main gates.  She vividly remembered her fear and uncertainty upon her first visit to the towering kingdom.  She’d had no idea what to expect, and she’d had no supporters to call her own. So much had changed since then.  Not only did she have some of the most amazing supporters she could have ever wished for, but she also couldn’t wait to get inside.

But she wasn’t the only one who’d changed.  Vale had changed as well, as evidenced by the lack of soldiers guarding the front gates.  Only a handful of loosely armored men stood outside today, and they waved the Atlesian procession through after a cursory inspection.

Upon arriving in Vale, Weiss discovered even more changes.  The streets were alive with merchants selling wares, children racing home from school, and parents buying fruits and vegetables for dinner.  Along with the animated, busy townsfolk, seemingly every street corner and building had been lavishly decorated in Vale’s royal colors: a gold and crimson combination that Weiss had grown quite fond of.

The sight filled her with joviality fitting the occasion and made her even more restless to reach the palace.  She could practically feel Ruby’s presence now.  After spending two weeks apart while Ruby helped with the preparations...well, Weiss was more than ready to be wrapped in another one of Ruby’s stress-melting hugs.

James’ subtle antsiness also grew as the palace rose above them.  The setting sun reflected off of the sturdy walls in a reddish glow, casting the illusion that the entire building smoldered like a giant ember. The royal guards stationed outside the gates inspected the carriages more carefully - a precaution Weiss was grateful for even though it fueled her impatience.  Her knee jittered even faster once the guards let them pass, her eyes glued to the main entrance up above.

The next few minutes of the carriage pulling up the long drive seemed to take an eternity.  As soon as the procession stopped at the bottom of the palace steps, Weiss eschewed all custom and opened the door for herself. No sooner had she hopped down from the carriage did a blast of wind nearly knock her off her feet.  Well, the wind didn’t, but the girl careening into her for a hug nearly did.

“Weiss!”

After letting go too soon, Ruby quickly made up for it by pulling Weiss into a kiss.  Weiss’ spark jolted to life, racing through her veins while her mind rejoiced in the comfort that she’d longed for.  Ruby’s soft lips, the smell of her hair, her subtle warmth...if they weren’t in public, Weiss would have melted into Ruby right then and there.  Instead, her eyes fluttered open when Ruby pulled away and beamed down at her.

“I missed you so much,” Ruby confessed as easily as breathing.  Her silver eyes sparkled with unconcealed joy while her spark blew across them like a light breeze, making Weiss’ heart feel whole again.

“I missed you too,” she replied before leaning in for another kiss.  Ruby indulged her, for a little while at least, before breaking away and grinning at James.

“I missed you too, James!”

Before he responded in his customarily demure way, Ruby threw her arms around his neck for a hug.  Remarkably, he hardly balked at the enthusiastic greeting.  He lifted her off the ground and spun her in a circle, earning an infectious giggle, before carefully returning her to her feet and smiling down at her.

“He finally smiles,” Weiss teased while watching the inseparable duo.

“Were you grumpy, James?  Did you miss me that much?”

“He pouted this entire time.”

While Ruby and Weiss giggled, and Ruby playfully poked James’ side, he tried and failed to hide another smile.  The lapse in control didn’t last long, however, as he soon cleared his throat and squared his shoulders.

“I’ll see that your belongings make it to your chambers, My Queen.”

Seemingly content to be in Ruby’s presence again, or knowing that they would keep teasing him if he stayed, he bowed and strode off to take care of his duties.

“Make sure you take her stuff to my chambers, James!” Ruby called after him.  When he waved off the clarification, Ruby giggled and turned to Weiss. “I’m glad he stayed with you.  I felt a lot better knowing you were safe.”

“Excuse me?”  Weiss playfully flipped her hair over her shoulder and scoffed.  “I can take care of myself, thank you very much.”

“I know you can!”  Resting her hands on Weiss’ waist, Ruby gently tugged their hips together.  “But my queen shouldn’t have to do that...”

A hot blush crept up Weiss’ cheeks at Ruby’s lowered voice and keen silver eyes.  Before losing herself to those thoughts, however, she glanced at the myriad of guards, employees, and civilians rushing around.  As much as she wanted to give in to temptation, it was a little early in this trip to make such a scene.

“Well, it’s probably best for his health if we aren’t apart again,” she replied.  “I think choosing between us was very uncomfortable for him.”

“Agreed!”  Ruby smiled and squeezed Weiss’ sides.  “Besides, I really missed you.  Things just aren’t the same without you around.”

Weiss understood the feeling perfectly.  Before saying as much, however, she spotted some familiar faces headed down the steps to greet them.  Walking hand-in-hand and seemingly loath to separate anytime soon, Blake and Yang looked as happy and healthy as Weiss had ever seen them.  Yang, in particular, radiated a warm, joyful glow that was so unlike when they first met.

“Congratulations, you two,” Weiss said as the pair joined her and Ruby.

“Thank you,” Blake replied with a reserved smile while Yang broke into a huge grin.

“Yeah, thanks, Weiss!  We couldn’t have done it without you.  Or, at least, without your sister.  But you know - that whole thing.”

Ruby giggled when Yang waved a hand rather than recount the tumultuous sequence of events leading them here.  Weiss and Blake, meanwhile, shared a knowing smile.  Even though those had been some of the most trying, difficult days of their lives, Weiss would do it again in a heartbeat.

“Quite the procession,” Yang added, her gaze sweeping across the carriages lining the palace drive.  “Does that mean you brought presents?”

“One or two.  As congratulations from the people of Atlas, and gratitude for your close partnership in bringing peace to our kingdoms.”

“Look at you, being all queenly,” Ruby remarked, kissing Weiss’ reddening cheek while Yang chuckled.

“Yeah, remember when she had no idea what to do?  It was like watching a baby take their first steps.”

Yang mimed a toddler teetering off balance until Blake grabbed her arm and tugged her toward the carriages. “Mind if we take a look?” Blake asked Weiss, who nodded.  “We’ll catch up at dinner,” Blake added before pulling Yang away.

The unspoken opportunity to catch up with Ruby without Yang’s teasing wasn’t lost on Weiss, who turned back to Ruby and immediately smiled.

“I’m so glad you’re here,” Ruby said before pulling Weiss into another kiss.  This kiss lasted longer than the first and quickly reminded her of just how much she loved Ruby.  Her spark sprang to life and greeted Ruby’s lips with a familiar burst of chill, making Ruby giggle, as usual.  It never ceased to amuse her when Weiss’ spark responded despite Weiss’ best attempts to control it.

“You’re so cute…” Ruby whispered against Weiss’ lips before pulling away.  The wisp of frost slipping through their lips made Weiss blush just as much as the compliment did.  Averting her gaze, she attempted to maintain her composure - a nearly impossible task considering they’d been apart for weeks and she’d missed Ruby more than ever.

“How are things here?” she asked in an effort to steer the conversation away from herself.  Fortunately, Ruby took the bait.  She also took Weiss’ hand and casually led them up the wide steps leading to the palace.

“Good!  Really busy with all the setup, but everything’s mostly done now.”

“How are Blake and Yang?”  When Ruby made a face, Weiss gave her a confused smile.  “What?”

“Ugh.  Weiss, they’re, like...all over each other.  All the time.”

Weiss didn’t know what she’d expected, but she laughed at the response and Ruby’s accompanying grimace.  Glancing behind them, she found that Blake and Yang had stopped holding hands, but only so that Yang could wrap an arm around Blake’s waist while they peeked at some of Atlas’ gifts.

“That’s a bad thing?” she asked, turning back to Ruby.

“Yes!” Ruby exclaimed, throwing her free hand in the air to emphasize her point.  “At least, when I’m here, it is.  I’ve walked in on them making out like ten times.  And I’m pretty sure I’ve only been here ten days.”

“They’re in love.”

“They can be in love.  But do they have to be in love where their little sister can see?”

Laughing, Weiss leaned over and kissed Ruby’s cheek.

“With how their relationship started, I understand why they’d take advantage of every moment.”  When Ruby pursed her lips, Weiss erased the expression with another kiss.  “Besides, you know the same thing’s happened to us…”

“Are you suggesting what I think you’re suggesting?”

“That we give them a little leeway?”

“That we give them a little payback!” Ruby corrected, giggling when Weiss’ brow rose.  “Come on, Weiss.  I know you want to…”

“I do want to.”  This time, Ruby’s brow shot up as Weiss pulled them together and leaned in to whisper, “But preferably without anyone watching.”

“I think that can be arranged…” Ruby murmured, her eyes sparkling at the mere suggestion.  Before following that thought any further, however, her gaze flitted over Weiss’ shoulder and her smile grew.  “Speaking of sisters...”

When Ruby nodded to the palace’s atrium, Weiss spun around and beamed the instant she spotted Winter.  Even though Winter’s white hair and fair skin were out of place amidst Vale’s sunny blondes and brunettes, she walked with the same poise and certainty that she always had.

“I’ll let you catch up,” Ruby whispered, squeezing Weiss’ hand before disappearing in a soft breeze.  While Ruby rejoined Blake and Yang at the top of the stairs, Weiss took a deep breath and met her sister at the entrance to Vale’s large, outdoor meeting area.

“Winter,” she said once they reached each other.

“Weiss,” Winter responded with a tilt of her chin.  “It’s nice to see -”

Weiss threw her arms around Winter’s neck before Winter finished the polite greeting.  They’d never been big huggers but, after everything they’d been through, Weiss wanted that to change.  Fortunately, Winter sighed and returned the embrace.

“It’s good to see you,” she said softly before pulling away and taking in Weiss’ appearance.  “You look well.”

“You do, too.”

Weiss couldn’t remember the last time her sister looked so...content.  Knowing that Winter wouldn’t admit as much - not yet, at least - Weiss didn’t dwell on the remarkable change. “How are things here?” she asked instead.

Clasping her hands behind her back and straightening her shoulders, Winter quickly found the perfect posture that Weiss used to be so jealous of.

“Everything’s well.  Morale’s increasing as the Phage’s impact lessens.”

“That’s wonderful.  But how are things for you?”

Winter furrowed her brow and thoughtfully considered her response.

“I’m...well, I think.  It’s different here, but...nice.  Some of their mannerisms can be harsh and...overly loud...but there’s an endearing quality to their excitement.”

“Is that your way of saying you like them?”

Pursing her lips, Winter thought long and hard about the question.

“I suppose I do,” she admitted, looking as if the response was a shock to her as well.  “It’s strange to think that this is where I ended up, but I enjoy helping them.”  After a brief pause, she added, “I suppose I enjoy helping, in general.”

Weiss’ heart swelled at the simple admission, but she didn’t dwell on it for fear of making Winter uncomfortable.  After living under their father’s thumb for so long, Winter finally felt useful, not used.

“How is everything in Atlas?” Winter soon asked, so Weiss smiled and answered like her sister would.

“Good, I think.  The Council finalized plans to rebuild our stockpiles as quickly but judiciously as possible.  The people seem happier too, although the firespitters made them uncomfortable at first.”

“I can only imagine,” Winter replied with a soft scoff while Weiss smiled at the memory of Atlas welcoming its first foreign visitors in as long as she could remember.  No one knew what to expect.  People were nervous yet excited.  Then a loud, rambunctious group of firespitters appeared and broke every moment of silence that Atlas so greatly coveted.

Ultimately, Vale’s influence turned out to be a great one.  Atlas loosened up - although just a little - while the fire sparks treated those who were sick.

“We’re converting the chapel into a care center,” Weiss added.  “I hope that one day, when people look at it, they only see a bright future.”  When Winter set a hand on Weiss’ shoulder, Weiss smiled up at her.  “Can you imagine the look on Father’s face if he learned that Vale held our answer all along, and all we had to do was work together?”

“Our sworn enemies...our saviors?” Winter said before softly scoffing and shaking her head.

Spotting Ruby glancing their way, silently asking if it was alright to interrupt, Weiss motioned that she needed another minute.  Nodding, Ruby started a conversation with one of the guards instead.

“Do you think you’ll ever come home?”  As soon as Weiss saw the hesitation in Winter’s eyes, she added, “I want you to come home when you’re ready.  The Council already dropped any charges against you - I explained again that it was an accident, and that if they want me to forget what they’re guilty of, they’d better forget an accident.”

Unlike the previous times Weiss had brought up this sensitive subject, Winter didn’t respond with an outright ‘no.’  That alone gave Weiss the encouragement to continue.

“And you can take your place as queen.”

As soon as the words left Weiss’ lips, Winter balked.

“Weiss, you’re a more worthy queen than I’d ever be -”

“I’m not saying you have to take over,” Weiss interrupted.  “I was thinking...we’d both lead.”  Winter’s brow rose at the suggestion, but Weiss added, “If Vale can do it, why can’t we?”

For a long, quiet moment, Winter stared at Weiss while question after question flitted through her eyes.  Weiss didn’t need to hear them to know what her sister was thinking.  Was she actually willing to give up some of her power?  Did she trust Winter that much?

The answers were yes and yes.

“I’ll consider it,” Winter eventually replied.  “There’s more work to do here first.  Once we’ve found some stability and can work towards preventing the Phage rather than simply curing it, then...I’ll consider it.”

“Whenever you’re ready.”

That doorway would always be open for Winter, who deserved a chance at redemption as much as anyone.  Weiss hoped that Winter agreed one day.  That she came home, and the two of them could make decisions together in the same way that Ruby and Yang did.

“Oh,” Weiss added, a grin slipping onto her lips as she remembered the peculiar request she’d received before leaving Atlas.  “Councilor Hill sends her regards and hopes that you’ll return sooner rather than later.  She’s ‘quite keen’ on seeing you again.”  Noticing how still Winter had suddenly become, Weiss barely held back a laugh while asking, “Why is the Speaker of the Council practically begging you to come home?”

Winter opened her mouth but then closed it on her first response.  She then cleared her throat and, almost impossibly, straightened her posture even more.

“Councilor Hill and I had an…amicable…relationship.  Please tell her that I intend to see her again.  This is just…something I need to do first.”

“I’ll let her know.  I’m sure she’ll understand.”  Weiss nodded and half-heartedly attempted to temper her smile.  She couldn't, however, resist adding, “And I’m sure she’s willing to wait however long you need.”

Winter’s blush was as much confirmation as Weiss needed.  Rather than press for details - like how and when and where - Weiss embraced the knowledge that her sister had another reason to return to Atlas eventually.  In the meantime, she would put a little more effort into getting to know the Council’s civic-minded leader.

When Weiss’ gaze subconsciously drifted Ruby’s way, Ruby felt the look and ended her conversation with a friendly wave.  Seconds later, she appeared by Weiss’ side and gently took Weiss’ hand in her own.

“Can I steal her from you?” Ruby asked Winter, who responded with a small smile.

“I believe she’s already yours.”

While Weiss blushed at Winter’s knowing look, someone across the courtyard motioned for Winter’s attention.  Weiss didn’t recognize the young man, but Winter nodded to him before backing that way.

“If you’ll excuse me, I have a few matters to attend to.  Let’s catch up later.”

“Absolutely,” Weiss agreed, and Winter almost smiled before joining the man for whatever task they needed to complete.  As the pair hurried away, locked in conversation, Weiss smiled.  The brief interaction might seem mundane, but she and Winter grew up with only each other to rely upon.  Now…they were blessed with more friends and supporters than they ever could have imagined.

“I think she likes it here.” When Weiss looked over, Ruby smiled and added, “And she’s such a hard worker…she’s already earned everyone’s respect.”

Weiss’ heart warmed at the words, but she glanced around before leaning close to Ruby and saying, “Well, they better appreciate her while she’s here…because I think she has a very good reason to return to Atlas.”

“Oh, really?”  Ruby’s brow briefly rose, then furrowed when Weiss nodded.  “Is it Councilor Hill?”

“How did you know that?” Weiss asked while Ruby laughed and tugged her towards the palace.

“Call it a hunch.  Or call it Robyn sighing with longing every time Winter comes up in conversation.”

“Does she really?”  When Ruby nodded, Weiss glanced over her shoulder before shaking her head and smiling to herself.  That little bit of gossip deserved further exploration over the next few days, if only to figure out just how close the two Atlesians were.

“How come you’re on a first-name basis with the councilors?” she asked as they slowly crossed the atrium.

“Because it feels weird to call them ‘councilor’ all the time.”  Ruby shrugged as if her familiarity with Atlas’ leading politicians meant very little when in actuality it meant quite a lot.  “Yang and Blake said they’d meet us in the dining room,” she added, her steps light and bouncy as they approached the ornate palace doors.  “I hope you’re hungry because we have so much food.  I don’t know how we’ll ever eat it all.”

“You’re worried about finishing food?”  Weiss scoffed and shook her head at the inconceivable concept.  “It must be enough to feed the entire kingdom.”

“Oh, believe me.  It is.”

After passing through the palace doors, Ruby led Weiss across the extravagant foyer, past the magnificent throne room where they met, and to the large dining room where they’d shared their first meal.  That dinner felt like a lifetime ago, but she still remembered being a bundle of nerves while trying to keep up appearances in front of the two intimidating queens.  Today, she felt nothing but good cheer while walking in hand-in-hand with Ruby.

Blake and Yang were sitting in the same seats they had on that day.  And they were, as Ruby referenced earlier, in the middle of a kiss.

Ruby opened her mouth to say something, but Weiss set a hand on her arm and smiled at her.  It could be that this was only the first time she’d walked in on the pair, but she found it more sweet and endearing than bothersome.  Plus, the two separated moments later and shared affectionate smiles before acknowledging their audience.

“There you are,” Yang greeted Ruby and Weiss as they sat across the table.  “I can’t believe we beat Ruby to dinner.  She must’ve really missed you.”

The teasing comment and grin that came along with it brought a light blush to Weiss’ cheeks and a happy flutter to her heart.  Those feelings only grew when Ruby covered Weiss’ hand with her own.

“You bet I did!  I’d skip dinner if I had to.”

While Yang chuckled, Blake smiled at her before meeting Weiss’ gaze.

“Thanks for the gifts, Weiss.  We only looked at some of them, but they’re incredible.”

“Yeah, thank you,” Yang chimed in.  “I think I saw one or two things for Ruby though…”

Yang waggled her brow at Ruby, whose eyes widened as she said, “Really??”

Seeing the pure delight in Ruby’s silver eyes, Weiss played coy for hardly a second before caving.

“Yes, I did.  Just a few small things,” she elaborated, but Ruby just kept beaming.  Ruby’s reaction to any gift, no matter how big or small, only encouraged Weiss to give more.  She would give Ruby the entirety of Atlas if that were possible, and if Ruby would even accept.  Maybe Weiss would try that one day just to see how Ruby responded…if nothing else, she could use it as a gesture to show that Atlas was her responsibility, but Ruby was her world.

A group of waiters entered the dining room then, each carrying a tray with a single glass bringing back even more memories.  The uniquely Valerian tradition brought a grin to Yang’s lips in no time.

“You know what time it is,” she remarked while glasses of flaming liquid were placed in front of them.  Picking up a glass and holding it over the center of the table, she smiled at each of them in turn.  “I think we already set fire to a lot of our past, but there’s nothing wrong with doing it again.  Really make sure we burn that bad stuff away.”

“And look forward to a brighter future,” Blake added, holding her glass beside Yang’s while the two of them shared an adoring look.

Weiss remembered the first time she partook in this tradition as she picked up her own glass.  She’d been a different person then.  She’d been a half-queen - not just because she’d hidden a piece of herself, but because she’d been weak, uncertain, and willing to let others control her.

Having a spark didn’t make her a better leader.  Compassion did.  Selflessness did.  Resolve and determination did.  But…she would admit that having a spark came in useful at times like these.  While the ice in her heart stirred to life, readying itself to counteract the fire dancing across the top of the drink, she raised her glass and smiled at Ruby.

“To new beginnings,” she said when Ruby smiled back at her.

“And happily-ever-afters!” Ruby added, making the rest of them chuckle before they lifted the glasses to their lips and downed the drinks, fire and all.  The burst of heat hardly reached Weiss’ mouth before being extinguished by the frost unfurling from her lips.  The rapid, vaguely unnerving contrast of fire and ice was quite the experience, especially when followed by the sweet, cool drink.

She would do it again.  Of course, she would do anything again if it made Ruby giggle so delightfully.

“Now, we eat!” Ruby remarked as the empty glasses were replaced by plates piled high with food.

Chuckling at Ruby’s endless enthusiasm for eating, Weiss picked up her silverware and began dinner at a much slower pace.  The meal was far more decadent than on her first visit - a positive sign of Vale’s recovery.  They may not be out of the woods yet, but so much had improved in a short amount of time.  Combined with Atlas and Vale’s newfound cooperation, Weiss couldn’t wait to see where the next few years led them.

“So Weiss,” Yang asked before long, steering the conversation while Ruby was too busy eating.  “How was the trip?”

“Long but smooth.  Not nearly as exciting as it could’ve been.”

When Weiss looked at Blake, Yang laughed and nudged Blake’s elbow.

“I knew you should’ve gone out there and surprised her.  That would’ve been so funny.”

“I was willing to…”

“Right, right.  Then I decided I couldn’t handle you leaving me.”

Proving that point, Yang reached over and pulled Blake onto her lap.  Blake sighed while Yang hugged her close, but she sighed with a small smile that Yang must know was there.  Blake made no attempt to reclaim her seat, either.  She dragged her plate over instead, content to eat while sitting on Yang’s lap.

Weiss glanced at Ruby and wondered whether they could get away with the same intimacy.  Eventually, she shook her head at the idea.  Considering how fast Ruby ate, that could end up embarrassing for them both.  Or, at least, embarrassing for one of them…

“Ready for tomorrow?” Ruby asked between mouthfuls, oblivious to Weiss’ internal musings.

“You know it.”  Yang kissed Blake’s shoulder and then beamed up at her.  “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”

“We were going to do that regardless of whether or not we got married…”

“But this makes it official,” Yang replied, gently squeezing Blake’s sides.  “Now everyone will know we’re together forever.”

Blake smiled at the thought before kissing Yang’s cheek and turning back to dinner.  “As long as you’re happy, I’m happy,” she added as she did so.

Yang grinned at the simple remark, and Weiss couldn’t help smiling at the happy couple.  After everything they’d been through and the challenges they’d overcome, seeing them so happy and in love served as a pleasant reminder that they’d prevailed against incredible odds.

Of course, if Weiss needed a reminder of how far they’d come, she only needed to look at Ruby.  Reaching over to squeeze Ruby’s hand, and receiving a soft squeeze in response, Weiss smiled and returned to her meal.

“Have you ever seen a Vale wedding before?” Yang asked Weiss.

“I can’t say that I have.”

“Neither has Blake.”  After resituating Blake, Yang smiled up at her.  “They’re...something,” Yang added before laughing.  Unsure if that was a good or bad sign, Weiss turned to Ruby for a more direct answer.

“Vale has a...special way of doing things,” Ruby explained with a growing smile.  “It’s really cool.”

“Or hot,” Yang corrected.

Based on that coy explanation, Weiss understood that tomorrow’s event would feature a superfluous amount of fire.  Honestly, she wasn’t surprised.  From what she’d learned about firespitters so far, they loved using their element whenever and wherever possible.

“Oh,” she said before meeting Blake’s gaze.  “James and I stopped by the Valley on the way here.  It looks amazing.”

“Progress has been faster than expected -”

“She’s being modest,” Ruby cut in before Yang could.  “She’s got everyone working toward a common goal and they’ve all bought in.  The sense of community and accomplishment right now is unbelievable.”

Weiss had felt as much from her brief visit.  The determined atmosphere rivaled what she felt in Atlas as a group of strangers came together to fix common problems.  In the Valley’s case, new construction had popped up on seemingly every corner while much of the damage had been cleared away.  There was still more to be done, but the fields had already been planted for the next harvest and everyone seemed encouraged by the progress.

“Oh!” Ruby soon added.  “We should stop and take a longer tour on our way home!”

“Absolutely,” Weiss agreed, her heart fluttering and a smile quickly appearing.  She loved when Ruby called Atlas ‘home’ just as much as she loved seeing how thrilled Ruby was with the Valley’s progress.  Of course, Ruby was always thrilled when people were happy.

“I can give you a tour,” Blake offered only for Yang to immediately pout.

“Do you have to?”

“Why not?” Blake asked, so Yang sighed and pushed her remaining food around the plate.

“Well, it’s just, we’re getting married and all.  I thought we’d get to, like, take a trip or something.”

“We can do that,” Blake replied, lovingly running her fingers through Yang’s hair.  “But don’t you think Weiss deserves to see what she’s helped create first?”

When Yang glanced at Weiss, it looked like she seriously considered saying ‘no.’  Eventually, she sighed and said, “I guess…”

“It won’t take long,” Ruby piped in.  “Plus, you can come with us, then leave from there for your trip!”

The solution immediately perked up Yang’s mood.

“Alright, that’s a great idea.  I want another Belladonna-led tour, too.”

Blake playfully rolled her eyes while setting her silverware down, though she appeared subtly delighted at the thought of having Yang’s company.  Yang, meanwhile, grinned at Ruby, who’d just finished her meal as well as the remainder of Weiss’.

“Did you have enough?” Yang teased while Ruby leaned back and sighed.

“Think so.  Enough to last until the morning, at least.”

Weiss patted Ruby’s hand while Yang chuckled and looked at Blake.

“What do you think - early bedtime?  We kind of have a big day tomorrow, and I bet these two want some privacy.”

Yang’s wink made Weiss blush, but she didn’t argue.  As nice as it was for the four of them to be together again, there would be plenty of time to catch up over the next few days.  Tonight, she honestly just wanted to reconnect with Ruby.

“I’m amenable to that,” she agreed and, before Yang laughed, turned to Ruby.  “Is that alright with you?”

“Of course!  I mean, you had a long trip.  I’m sure you’re excited to sleep in a real bed again.”

Without even trying, Ruby deepened Weiss’ blush and prompted Yang’s laughter.

“I’ll bet she is,” Yang teased before being distracted by Blake getting off of her lap.

“Come on, let’s leave them alone.”  Blake pulled Yang to her feet but didn’t let go of her hand once they were both standing.  Looking comfortable and at ease, Blake smiled at Yang before turning to Ruby and Weiss. “Enjoy your night,” she said, a bit of mirth sparkling in her eyes.  “We’ll see you in the morning.”

“And Weiss, I think Ruby has another peace treaty for you to sign,” Yang teased before Blake shushed her and pulled her out of the dining room.  Weiss’ cheeks grew even hotter as the pair left, but her heart joined in with some rapid beating once she realized that she and Ruby were finally alone.

“What do you think?” Ruby asked while taking Weiss’ hand.  “Want to head upstairs?”

“Yes, please.”

Ruby was so sweet that she didn’t even look bothered by the thought of Weiss going to sleep early.  Instead, she cheerfully led Weiss out of the dining room.  While Ruby would never admit it out loud, her slow pace revealed her hidden desire to keep Weiss up as long as possible - an uncommon display of selfishness that Weiss encouraged more often than not.

“Are you ready for tomorrow?” Ruby asked while they made their way upstairs.

“Do I need to do anything besides be there on time?” Weiss asked in return, so Ruby giggled and shrugged.

“Not really.  Just show up and look pretty, I guess.  But you look pretty all the time so that shouldn’t be a problem.”  Weiss’ heart fluttered at the compliment, but Ruby thought nothing of it before continuing.  “Yang was worried you wouldn’t make it on time.  She really wants you to be there.”

“That’s sweet of her.  I wouldn’t have missed it though.”

“I know,” Ruby said, squeezing Weiss’ hand as they walked up the grand staircase to the palace’s living areas.  “She’s just really excited about everything.  She’s been running around like crazy the past few days.”

“I’m sure you didn’t join her in that at all,” Weiss teased, knowing full well that Ruby couldn’t resist responding to someone’s excitement with her own.

“I might have encouraged her a bit...but only because I love seeing her with so much energy!”

Even though Weiss chuckled and shook her head, she understood Ruby’s sentiment.  Ruby had watched Yang suffer for a long time while fearing the worst.  Having avoided that horrible outcome, she was positively giddy at how her sister bounced back to being a spirited, gregarious, larger-than-life character.

Yang’s remarkable recovery faded from Weiss’ thoughts as she and Ruby rounded the corner leading to Ruby’s chambers.  Having been here several times by this point, she knew exactly what to expect when Ruby opened the door and motioned her inside. Ruby might not live here anymore, but the room still captured her essence.  The comfortable furniture, the warm decorations, the faint aroma of fresh flowers...everything worked together to put visitors at ease.  Now, it reminded Weiss of home, where Ruby had brought a similar influence in decorating Weiss’ space and beyond.

“Looks like James found the right room.”

Grinning, Ruby tapped the top of Weiss’ luggage.  Now that they were here though, and alone, with her luggage beside them, nerves sprouted in Weiss’ chest.

Being apart for the past couple of weeks had proved something that she’d suspected for quite some time: that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with Ruby.  They got along perfectly.  They could talk about anything.  They could make the largest or smallest decisions with ease.  Most importantly, they loved and supported one another above all else.  Weiss believed that Ruby felt the same, but she still worried about ruining something wonderful.  Was it too early to take another leap of faith?  The past few months had already been a whirlwind of big, incredible changes - did they really need to change more right now?

“Everything alright?” Ruby asked.

“Of course.  I’m just...thinking about things.”

“Well, why don’t you think about things out loud with me?” Ruby suggested before leading Weiss to the nearest sofa and sitting down.  While Weiss sat beside her, she smiled and set a hand on Weiss’ knee.  “What’s going on at home?  Anything good?”

After glancing at her bags, Weiss shook her head.

“Not really -” she began before remembering that was untrue.  “Oh, actually, I spoke to Councilor Hill the other day.  She wants to step down as Speaker.”

“She does?  But...who would take her place?”

“No one.”  When Ruby’s brow furrowed, Weiss shook her head.  “She suggested that there shouldn’t be a Speaker.  That none of them should be elevated above the other.”

“Oh.”  After mulling over that idea, Ruby looked at Weiss.  “What do you think?”

“I think it’s a good idea.  It’s symbolic at the very least.”

“But what about...you know, succession?”  Weiss hardly opened her mouth before Ruby rushed on.  “Not that it’ll ever come to that, but you know...if it did.”

Ruby looked unnerved by the mere thought, so Weiss smiled and patted her leg.

“If that ever happened, the people of Atlas would decide who takes the throne.  It could be one of the councilors, it could be someone else entirely - the choice would be theirs.”

It was another drastic change in a year full of them, but it felt like the right thing to do.  Weiss gained even more confidence in the decision when Ruby nodded.

“I like it.  Plus, it should discourage anyone from trying what Ironwood did.  And I’m all for keeping you as safe as possible.”

“Me too,” Weiss replied before glancing at her bag yet again.  With Councilor Hill’s news out of the way, there was only one other important matter she had to share.  But this one was life-changing for her personally more so than for the rest of Atlas.

“There’s one other thing.”  Heart beating faster now, Weiss patted Ruby’s knee before moving over to her bag.  She remembered exactly where she’d stored the important document so had no trouble finding it, but she took a deep breath to calm her humming spark before returning to Ruby.  “I thought you’d like to see this.”  Before second-guessing herself, she handed the page to Ruby.  “It’s a new law the Council just passed.  I signed it a couple days ago.”

“Look at you signing laws all by yourself!” Ruby gushed, kissing Weiss’ cheek before reading.  Weiss’ heart hammered in her ears as each second passed, but it only took a few of them before Ruby’s eyes widened.

“Is this -?”

“Yes.”  Reaching over, Weiss held Ruby’s hand and stared into her gorgeous silver eyes.  “This makes it legal for citizens of Atlas to marry whoever they please, regardless of heritage.”

Weiss held her breath waiting for Ruby’s response, wondering if Ruby would make the connection between Atlas’ new law and Weiss’ wish for their future.  It looked like Ruby didn’t know how to respond though, as she looked at the piece of paper in her hands and searched for words.

“This...this is great, Weiss!  I know it seems like a small thing, but...I think it’ll make a lot of people really happy.”

“That’s my hope,” Weiss admitted, her nerves abruptly doubling.  She opened her mouth but closed it soon after, squeezing Ruby’s hand and deciding that was enough for now.  When the moment felt right, or when her patience ran out, she would ask what she really wanted to ask.  Tonight, she would just enjoy their time together.

“You know...I love thinking about the future.”  Setting the new law aside, Ruby clasped both of Weiss’ hands in her own.  “I can imagine a time when there are a bunch of Atlesians living in Vale, and a bunch of Valerians living in Atlas, and everyone’s just happy and getting married and having better lives than ever.”

“I love thinking about that, too.  Just like I love you.”

The words flowed so easily that Weiss hardly paused before leaning in for a kiss.  Her spark snapped to life when Ruby’s lips met hers - a feeling that never lessened no matter how many kisses they shared.  It was as if her spark was proclaiming that hiding her love for Ruby was a pointless endeavor, so she didn’t even try.  She let the cold rush through her veins before slipping from her mouth to Ruby’s, chilling the air between them and warming her heart at the same time.

Before losing herself to that feeling, she briefly broke away from Ruby’s lips and smiled while brushing her fingers through Ruby’s hair.  Growing up, she couldn’t have even dreamed of being this happy and optimistic about her life and future, but it was all thanks to Ruby.  Weiss knew it, her overjoyed heart knew it, and she would ensure that Ruby knew it sooner rather than later.

In that future she imagined, where Atlas and Vale cooperated more than ever before, she and Ruby were married.  Living together.  Spending every day together.  Leading Atlas together.

That would wait for now though.  After spending so long apart, Weiss just wanted to show Ruby just how much she’d been missed.

“So...Yang mentioned you have a treaty for me?” Weiss asked, smiling when Ruby laughed.

“I have several,” she said before kissing Weiss again, longer and more passionately this time.  “It will probably take all night to get through them...”

“Good thing I’m here to help you with them then…”

When Ruby laughed and pressed closer, Weiss welcomed Ruby into her space.  For the first time in her life, it felt like her future was hers for the taking.  She could choose to be happy.  She could choose to help others.  She could choose compassion, kindness, and love over power, coercion, and control.

She could choose Ruby, and she always would.
