thank you

This is my first watch, it's so interesting the way fate intervened twice to essentially save Lelouch. Once when the chess game had him on the verge of defeat before the train bumped, and then again when Mao on a whim went to get a rifle instead of just murkin em right there. Even the best laid plans...also so interesting to hear how Lelouch was processing the situation. He feels so smart...curious where he ranks in the anime-verse vs. Shikamaru/Light/etc

Pretty much. Lelouch made a kind of bad decision. Because he was emotional and exposed as zero and thrown off by losing and getting her mind read. He made a bad decision. It was a bad geass. Nothing like his tactics from before, just the emotional need to save Shirley.

Ronald Bohne

Lelouch erased her memories not only to protect his identity but also to protect his own feelings. He could not go back to normal interactions with Shirley like everything was fine after discovering how he had hurt her and what she did to keep his secret. In that moment he thought that he needed to sever that bond entirely to move forward as Zero.

Lelouch could have just erased her memories of the past 24h or so, but there are pretty much two reasons he erased everything: to keep his own feelings away to completely erase her out of his life, but also to keep her away from him for her own safety. He just went through psychological distress for getting her dad killed, and in this episode there was a pretty important line by CC where she said Lelouch should keep the people he values away from him, because they will get tangled in in all the shady shit he does. So he completely shut Shirley out of his life. But also keep in mind, that unlike Light from Death Note who was a full blown sociopath being able to make calculated moves at all times, Lelouch often panics and makes weird/bad decisions whenever his feelings get in his way. He is extremely smart but also really emotional, which can be seen as a flaw for him

if it's to protect her safety and his mission, its more of a logical decision no? it would an emotional decision to NOT erase her memory because it would mean hes valuing their relationship over the greater good

Phyllis

I felt that and cried. Lelouch making the decision to erase all her memories of him in order to protect her.

Letan Vinso

Everything checks out here. This episode has original soundtrack.

Letan Vinso

This is where Lelouch differs from Light. He actually cares about the people close to him. it's not just an act like Light does just to further his agenda.

At this point they have already watched the next episode, so a very minor spoiler regarding next episode. Shirley continues going to the school, thus being close to Lelouch at least physically. And Shirley suddenly not remembering Lelouch is very weird to the other students, so I feel like Lelouch didn’t cut loose ends. Possibly due to not thinking it completely through. He could have Geassed her to move to the other side of Japan under the disguise of starting over due to trauma. But he Geassed her quickly before she could do anything irrational I suppose.

iu

yea it was weird to the other students but there were no real consequences. keeping her safe and protecting his mission is more important than any confusion their friends may have

Why is Michelle so nervous?
