The first time I watched this part of the show, I also thought that its pace was a little slow. But after re watching it, I found it more enjoyable and interesting. I think the reason for that was that my first time watching it I used to take on many episodes at once and didn't have time to connect with the new characters, unlike now.

An insect with a disgusting nature, had more humanity than an “innocent” child. Gon was never shown as innocent. Actually, he was much scarier than killua throughout the show. Though it wasn’t shown visually. This draw backs to the hunter exam, where gon didn’t want to become a hunter, but had to, in order to find his dad. He did whatever it took, even if hanzo (ninja guy) broke bones. Gon was anyways shown as the person to do whatever it takes to achieve what he wants, even if it meant losing his own humanity.

Ron, ur right on Gon and Killua. Killua has changed because he is no longer the cold blooded Zoldyck assassin he was before. He genuinely cares about his friend so much, hes become more human u could say. Conversely, Gon who was the more innocent and naive kid in the beginning has completely changed as he slowly realizes over time that he cant save the people he cares about and the harsh realities of the world. Kite's death was the best example of that, seeing how much it tore him apart because he realized it was indeed their weakness that caused it. Killua is slowly watching Gon lose his innocence right before his eyes and that is why hes changed. Its almost Poetic

The reason why some people feel this arc is a little dragged is because it has a lot of layers and things going on at the same time. Different from a typical modern 12 episode anime, HxH is complex and I guess a lot of people aren't used to that. The manga could easily be a book because the dialogues and texts are even heavier than the anime. Is not that the pace is bad, it's the way that this kind of story function. For me persoanlly it's just perfect, I love HxH the way it is.

I would like to say killua has always been more human than gon, it was just his environment. Which in this case was killing people, and he didn’t like the plan and future for him being an assassin. If gon and killlua switched places, killua would never find his dad, and gon would stay and become the greatest assassin as he was supposed to be.

In all seriousness I never realised the slow pacing because of how incredibly fast I binged this show years ago. Watching it slow with you guys is just fun because I can overanalyze stuff.

Ultimately Gon is just a child and is not in full control of his emotions. When the rage takes over him, he is unable to control it as he has never experinced this kind of trauma in his life. Whenever people are quick to say Gon is evolving backwards or anything along those lines, they do not seem to factor that in to the overall picture. If anything he shows that childish naivety and hope by thinking that Kite can be fixed

Killua's been worrying and changing so much recently this arc because he notices Gon changing. He was the only one to notice Gon's eyes going black before the mission, for example, and doesn't want Gon to lose himself in this mission.

Im speaking about the innocence here. Gon is like the sheltered child who just went into the world and seeing how harsh it can be. Killua knows how dark it is and had been immune due to his training and background, etc. The killua that met Gon following Satotz on the skateboard wouldnt have even looked back if gon died then. This Killua would probably lose his mind if Gon died now. So Gon has learned to hate, Killua has learned to love

Hes always been willing to sacrifice everything for his friends. Realizing that alone isnt enough and he cant save them all is the reason hes losing his innocence and humanity as u said. This is why I love HxH so much. The writing is absolutely beautiful in this arc.

Gon has had tunnel vision from the minute they all infiltrated the palace. And I think to pick up on what Killua was going through mentally, you kind of had to look at the things he was saying/thinking with regard to the things Gon was saying or maybe not saying. None of the changes in Gon or Killua were really sudden to me. I feel like Killua's been continually changing with every arc. However, I only really started to notice a change in Gon after Kite died. Thinking back, the show hasn't really been gotten into Gon's head all that much recently. And even when you did get insight into how he's thinking, it was always something like "Killua let's go" or "Pitou is in there" or a dead/numb and determined blank stare. Whereas it's been the opposite for Killua.

It broke my heart when gon said that to Killua. He kind of said, “oh you’re not as upset as I am because kite didn’t matter to you.” It’s pretty heartbreaking to hear a friend or anyone say that to you. Everyone handles grief differently so that’s how I took it

If someone hurt my family or friends and tortured them, I would have the exact same response as Gon or probably worse...Gon was holding it anyway. But still, Gon's sense of justice is quite interesting. He didn't feel anything when Hisoka killed many people, and he had forgiven Genthru, but he got mad when knowing Troupe was actually not a heartless people.

Ron you were right about what you said in regard to killua being hurt by what gon said to him. But also, to make it worse, it was also as if Gon was saying that Kite doesn't really mean anything to Killua, and so that's why he's able to remain composed and not as angry comparatively. Which basically insults and undermines any established relationship or care Killua had for kite as well. I felt bad for Killua too. Kite played a role in his life too. And the thing is, Gon has always previously been perceived as sort of cute/innocent/determined. However, he has also ALWAYS been stubborn/somewhat selfish/one track minded you could say.

"Gon never decided on morals like good and bad" Thats not accurate. Many examples throughout the show he shows he does care if the people he meet are good or bad. Even this very episode, Pitou was supposed to be the ultimate evil, yet she was healing someone. Thats why his rage kept growing. He wanted to kill her. If morals didnt mean anything like u said, Pitou clearly is a threat to him and his friends. He'd just kill her and ignore Komugi. And Lastly, killua never had an issue with his life before he met Gon. He changed after meeting him. He doesnt want "friends"...he wants Gon to always remain his friend. Gon caused him to want those things

Amazing episode. One thing to add to your discussion is that even if Killua had told Gon how he felt, Gon most likely wouldn’t have listened anyway, because his mind is focused soley on getting Kite back. This is such an amazing episode with so many layers that you can feel literally for everyone in the room, even Pitou. Even though she just follows the King’s orders, to see how far she is willing to sacrifice herself to fulfil the order is still quite admirable to me. Villains in this show really aren’t just villains. They are not simple subjects to be defeated by the main characters, they themselves are “main” characters too with their own convictions, personalities and developments.

As soon as the mission started, Killua felt Gon go cold, in a sense. And ever since the start of the mission, Killua has been scared to talk to Gon because he could lash out at Killua if he says the wrong thing. And now Gon has completely shut him out. Now, Killua is moving on his own while Gon waits. And YES the pacing is pretty slow but the climax of this specific sub-plot is so worth it.

This ep does such a good job of showing how selfish Gon really is, and has been the whole time. Even in the Hunter Exams, he was 12 watching other people die in front of him like it was no problem as long as it wasn't the people he cared about lol

Something I wanna mention, that you guys have already probably started to recognize. The main theme of Chimera Ant is "Man vs Monster" but chimera specializes in taking that to the next level. Keep that theme in mind while you watch how each of these many characters in this arc develop over these next 15-20 episodes. Its truly a work of art from Togashi

I just thought of something. This goes back to gon being stubborn and kind of selfish. Do yall remember when they were all playing dodge ball on greed island and Killua's hand was getting fucked up from gon's jajaken? Gon knew this and gave zero fucks because he was hell bent on beating Razor. Even at the expense of his friend being badly injured. He damn near had the same look in his eye as he does now. And naturally killua went along with it knowing how badly he was suffering because he wanted to be strong and a supportive friend.

if you would like some more context on what was up with killua, basically he felt terrible that Gon said this all means nothing to him. Killua isn't the cold hearted kid he used to be he does care he loves Gon and his friends so hearing that broke his heart.

I feel like this arc takes "anime time" literally and it makes the pacing feel slow. It takes the time to explore everyone's thought process and inner struggles during events. Thoughts and events are usually a lot faster then anyone speaking about said thoughts or events. So at the end of an episode you can ask yourself "What happened this episode" and boil it down to a few phrase. Take this episode for instance, the only thing that really happened is "Negotiation between Pitou and Gon about saving Komugi". So it doesn't feel like a lot happened, but in reality a lot happened. Killua thought process, Gon's emotions expressed, Pitou's loyalty demonstrated. One event, 3 perspective explored very deeply. That's just 1 episode, and the chimera ant arc "suffers" this "pacing problem" on a lot of their episodes. Me personally? I love it. I never thought that the chimera ant arc was about the fights.

If you think about Killua's past and how he is now, there a huge character development when it comes to caring for others. If this was old cold blooded Killua I think he wouldn't care to have Komugi healed and they killed Pitou on the spot.

Gon basically sees Kite as a second Father to him and it’s better displayed in the Manga by showing how much time they spent with each other. Their relationship helps in reinforcing how much in denial and anger Gon is in over Kite. Also you’ve realized that right now we’ve seen changes occurring in Gon, Killua, and the King and the parallels between each other. This is literally what makes this arc so peak. Also if you think back, you’ll realize that Gon has always being self serving, protective, and arrogant but in a childish way until now. This arc is the first time he’s seen someone really close to him really hurt and due to that, his toxic traits have completely engulfed him. I also like that you noticed Killua has a tendency to not communicate his feelings. It always been one of major things the show has been trying to make him be better at.

I agree that Gon can be crazy but I’ve never thought of him as a sociopath or serial killer in the making. To me, his emotions felt like a spoiled child. They tend to feel entitled, they’re arogant and selfish but he cares about people. If anything Killua was bread to be a sociopath/serial killer(with money being involved).

Unlike Killua, Gon is an incredibly selfish person. Not necessarily in a bad way—most the time his desires align with what’s good for people—but the kid does what he wants and expects to get away with it. We see this throughout the show. One of my favorite moments actually is when he’s directly called out for it in Greed Island after he tries to pick a fight with the Bomber. This instance is definitely more extreme, but it’s still very much the Gon we know, in my opinion at least.

I agree 100%. This arc is my favorite one and the pacing could not be have been any better. There are no unnecessary flashbacks like in other animes and every detail is something that will be important later on. I loved the narrator’s work throughout this arc. Without him, some details would have been glanced over.

My same thoughts that Killua was hurt/heartbroken by those words of Gon. T_T That is what I don't like about Gon's selfishness. Gon can be direct and speak his mind and think for others but when it comes to it he does things he thinks is right , does not listen and can speak hurtful stuff or be direct with no filter without thinking through it. I understand he is blinded by rage and cannot think about anything else but he spoke without thinking and hurt Killua even if it was unintentional. In this situation, Killua probably does know Gon spoke that since he was blinded and deafened to anything due to his rage he held in for so long but it does not change the fact staying by someone like Gon can be mentally tiring. That scene of Killua silent with white background was precisely him blanked, shocked and crying and screaming internally when Gon said to him 'since it means nothing to you' after so much they have been through. But Gon is still around the age of 12-14 so I have to tell myself he is still child/teenager. *sigh*~

Something that I think is sometimes missed about Gon's reaction this episode is his reasoning. Its been subtly set up the entire series and his naïve way of looking at the world is put on full display here. During their time together Kite remarks that Gon's view of his enemies is a dangerous one. Gon says something like "I have no sympathy for bugs that call each other trash" by this he meant that he doesn't mind dispatching enemies that don't value the same things he does. Kite notes how dangerous this view is because he could come across an enemy who cares for their allies (even if it is for superficial reasons this would invalidate Gon's sense of righteousness in take out said enemy) I think is very clear just how far gone Gon is mentally in this episode because what seems to hurt him most isn't what Pitou did to kite but that fact that she did it to him without hesitation and without considering the feelings of the people it would affect. Yet she is putting herself fully at the mercy of Gon, pleading with him to have the mercy that she did not. This is obviously a tough situation for a lot of reasons but I think Gon's lack of understanding for how poorly he framed his resolve to defeat the ants is what is on full display. Moving on to Gon's comments towards Killua, this clearly isn't easy for him, Killua just had a better understanding of the mission and what it means to be on opposite sides of someone. The ants aren't inherently bad or evil, (in fact most of what makes them evil comes from the people they were made from, the drug syndicate) they just oppose the goals of humanity and that reason alone is why they have to be stopped. Killing something that, as a species you view to be lower than yourself isn't something we generally consider as evil, especially when you do it to survive. The King makes this abundantly clear when he asks if a human would ever stop to consider the feelings of a pig or cow before killing them. I don't think I did a great job touching on all the points I wanted to, and you'll certainly be able to think on it more holistically once you finish this arc but I love the way Togashi didnt just dumb it down to good vs evil and in a lot of ways he lets us see the good and evil of both sides.

Back when Zepile just realized why he was so interested in Gon, in the Yorknew Arc. Gon appreciate what would benefits him, like when he appreciate Binolt, a murderer with scissors. When Binolt has some value to Gon, so Gon kept Binolt alive because of his usage. To help them practice. Now, Pitou, despite helping Komugi, but she wasn't benefit him. So it took Killua's intervention to stop Gon from attacking Pitou. It's the little detail from about 60 episodes ago, but comeback to the character's development in this crucial moment. And actually, their friendship always likes this. If you can remember, in the Yorknew Arc. When they managed to escape from Nobunaga successfully, Gon said in the mocking tone "Your (Killua) job is to keep me calm." While Killua replied was "You're really selfish naaa" Yeah Gon always go reckless and being emotional as much as he wanted. This time Killua did what he always there for Gon, but now Gon just can't see it that way anymore.

That's a great point, a lot of what Gon values in people is their utility to him and not the morality of their character. Things that would normally be seen as bad don't appear that way to Gon if he is able to learn via the use of them or if they are able to further his goal.

I have a love/hate relationship with reactions to this episode, cause I personally appreciate the beauty of complexity in Gon's character here, but I know a lot of people don't like seeing it. It's my favorite episode, especially because of the VA too. I was curious what type of reaction you would have because you guys always saw Gon as a nice kid. "Why are you being nice to her after everything you did to Kite?!" I always cry at this line. Remember Pitou didn't just kill Kite, she toyed around with the corpse after, and Gon even saw how Kite was used. If someone did that to someone important to me, I don't know if I even have enough patience to have a conversation like Gon did. There are so many ways that it could have gone, nobody knew about Komugi, was she friend or foe? Why is the enemy protecting her, Why is she important to the king? If she's healed, is she a strong opponent that we would have to fight against later? There are many such cases in other anime, and people always call it dumb or stupid when a character falls for the enemy's lies, when this could have been the same case. Pitou was 100% focused on healing Komugi that she didn't care to clarify about Kite, but she still expected Gon to give way for her wishes? It's unfair to Gon and I will always side with him in this scene.

I think one of the biggest missteps Togashi made in Hunter x Hunter was showing the audience that Kite was actually dead. It’s difficult for us as an audience to fully understand what Gon is going through when we have that vital piece of information that Gon doesn’t. For us, this confrontation is basically revenge, which doesn’t carry nearly as much weight as a mission to rescue a friend from torment that Gon believes he’s on. It would have been far easier to sympathize with Gon through all this and definitely way more impactful when the reveal finally happens if the viewers also believed Kite could be saved.
