As summarized in my specific article about it, there's no clear winner between DTM vs HGIG for improving HDR rendition in games.

Both aims to achieve the same goal (fully leveraging the real TV luminance capabilities) but in different ways:

  • HGIG is objectively the most accurate but can be overly dark in games which doesn't support Peak HDR Luminance sliders and/or when not viewed in a dark room;
  • DTM (Dynamic Tone Mapping) is objectively the most bright most of the time but can be overly bright with clipped highlights and raised mids/blacks, especially during night scenes.

On this Patreon you can find optimized settings for both, but my question is:

After all the HDR games you played so far, what are YOU preferring/choosing between DTM and HGIG in the end (and why)?

HGIG Very occasionally I uncheck HDR from my PS5/Xbox settings to play in SDR if DTM is recommended because I don't want to switch and recalibrate so often if I'm having a long gaming sesh

DTM on for me. My front room has light pouring in when it’s daytime and i prefer playing with a light on when it’s nighttime. HGiG is just way too dark for my set-up. RE4 Remake was the catalyst that made me switch to DTM and it’s SO much better looking. Other games like The Witcher 3 and Elden Ring also look much better, due to the former having a fixed luminance setting and the latter having a mediocre HDR implementation. Some games are overly bright sometimes but i’ll just deal

Tried HGIG in Resident Evil 4 Remake and I kept feeling like I could barely see anything. Used DTM and I was much happier.

I used DTM until I saw your chart guide and switched to HGIG. HGIG doesn't make stuff pop as much DTM, but from what I understand, it's more accurate if the game supports it.

I used HGiG at first for accuracy's sake. But some games were just TOO dark. Sea of Thieves is a perfect example. So rather than switching back and forth constantly, I switched to DTM so I could "set it and forget it" as much as possible.

Yeah, HGIG is the most accurate and the game doesn't even need to explicitly "support" it. It just needs a proper Peak HDR Luminance slider/control to 800 nits (or 1.000 nits for G2) and it will work as intended. That said, the HGIG accuracy is meant to be viewed specifically in a totally dark room otherwise it can still look too dark in dim/bright rooms (except if you enable something like AI Brightness to compensate)

Mike Renna

I just go with what's recommended here per game.

Ownsin

Interesting. I play games in a brightly lit room. What do you suggest for me to do? Sadly, I can't play in a dark room.

Evan

HGIG unless otherwise recommended.

Wideboyslim

I think per game analysis is key.

Do i have to change the PS5 HDR settings again if I switch to DMT, and if so, then to what? (I have a C2).

techoptimized

Yes, as DTM works best for HDR movies which are mostly mastered at 4.000 nits, so I would set the same both in system HDR Calibration app (see here how on PS5: https://www.patreon.com/posts/63780325 ) and in-game Peak HDR Luminance sliders whenever available (use the Search function here on the homepage or see my expanded Info/Index to find your games)

Ownsin

One last thing. Should I disable/enable A.I brightness with DMT on? I'm in a bright room as you know.

techoptimized

It depends if with even with DTM: On you're able to see dark details in shadow area when watching contents in your bright room. If yes, I would disabled AI Brightness. If not: enable it and let it raise them a little more based on your light in the room.
