This is by far the superior adaptation A Christmas Carol! Hilariously, one of my favorite fashion on YouTube (yes, real thing!) talked about what an absolutely amazing job with the historical accuracy of these costumes. In case anyone is curious: https://youtu.be/9O_mL1X4UMI?si=Oa0FG_kZDui-4m-e

I love that video! It helps me notice so many more things when I watch now.

Ahhhh I have been so excited for this. I grew up in a huge muppet household because my dad loves them, so my brother and I saw this in the theater when it came out and we’ve watched it at least twice every year since. My almost-two-year-old saw it for the first time this year and her favorite part was the Marleys 🤣 she kept saying “more Marmey Marmey Marmey”. There’s a reason people describe this as the most faithful adaptation of the story - so many of the lines are a direct lift, including the bit about being solitary as an oyster! The device of having Dickens in the movie really allows them to keep so much of the poetry of the story. And the rest is so clever. I especially love how the Marley number is a perfect old music hall routine, complete with them taking turns and pointing to their partner while he’s singing and dancing. And at the same time it’s so effectively creepy. The lyrics to all the songs have such brilliant turns of phrase. Ahhhh it’s just so good.

The juxtaposition between the delightfully charming muppets and full blown Dickensian performance from Michael Cane just created a beautiful classic and it’s ABSOLUTELY the best adaptation of the story

die hard is my favorite christmas movie. and i also like european vacation - i acknowledge it’s not great, but i still find it quotable on the regular. biggy piggy and look, kids - it’s big ben. parliament!

Oh ps mini Kermit is Kermit’s nephew Robin, who was a fixture of Muppet properties. He’s adorable in Muppet Family Christmas! (I hope that doesn’t count as a spoiler)

Next time you watch The Muppet Christmas Carol, make sure you watch the full-length version. You’ll be glad you did. The version you watched is controversially missing a really sweet, sad song by Belle.

Easily my favorite of all the Muppets movies. I'm sure a lot of the reason why is pure nostalgia; I grew up watching The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper on VHS, love both but they came out before my time, this one I saw in theaters as a little kid. That combined with it being associated with childhood Christmases gives it unfair advantage. At that age I was pretty darn scared of the Marleys and the Ghost of Christmas Future. Christmas Past was about exactly as creepy at that age and as adult. As great as Chris Cooper is in the 2011 movie and Tim Curry is in Muppets Treasure Island, Michael Caine is on a whole different level in this movie. The other two completely commit and have a ton of fun in those roles, but Caine doesn't just commit, he gives one of the best performances in his career, and that is saying a *lot* with the career he's had. It's a nuanced, genuine, completely human take on the Scrooge character that doesn't feel even slightly out of place alongside the charming Muppet wackiness.

I never even thought about how crazy it is that this feels like one coherent movie until a few years ago (this is on my yearly Christmas rotation). By all rights it should feel like a wild tonal juxtaposition between Michael Caine's performance and everything else but it completely works.

Allison O

Joe: “I didn’t know he could sing!” Me: (literally out loud, in my empty living room): “He can’t.” Truly what’s so charming about that last number is that Michael Caine is blissfully off key and having the time of his life.

dys

He's obviously not a professional singer but I think he acquits himself quite well in the final number. He has a pleasant voice so it doesn't bother me that he doesn't go for high notes and sometimes just speaks a line he knew he couldn't sustain.

It always amazes me how Dickens' words can still move us and make us laugh, even 180 years later. Some of the funniest lines in the movie are directly taken from his story. In the book, of course, Scrooge's partner was only Jacob Marley, but here they make the Marleys two brothers so they could have Statler and Waldorf. Did you notice the other Marley was named Robert? "Bob Marley." Many years ago I was fortunate enough to see Sir Patrick Stewart perform his one-man show of "A Christmas Carol" live on stage. He performed every part himself. It was a magical evening. Jim Henson was a fascinating man. I highly recommend his biography by Brian Jay Jones. And thank you, Kevin; I agreed with everything you said about all those "Christmas" movies.

Love this movie! I watch it once a year around the holidays. If you ever choose to rewatch it, I highly recommend going to the Extras section of this movie in Disney+ and choosing the "Full Length Version". It's only three or four minutes longer, but it contains an extra song which adds a lot of emotional depth to Scrooge's backstory, and frankly, is the best song of the movie in my opinion!

Brian Henson is Jim’s son. He had worked on a bunch of his dad’s productions since he was a teenager and even voiced Hoggle in Labyrinth! This was the first film Brian directed and it was the first big Muppet production made after Jim’s death. Hahaha, I love how you two were like “I didn’t find anything scary” about the Christmas Carol story and then got immediately freaked out by the creepy ghost of Christmas Past. Relatable! Broken record here, but you should go and watch the cut song “When Love is Gone” (the Scrooge and Belle breakup song). It adds so much emotion and makes the reprise of “When Love is Found” with Scrooge & Tiny Tim more satisfying.

Also I've seen someone on the internet say that Michael Caine works in this because he treats all the Muppets like fellow humans, and Tim Curry works in Muppet Treasure Island because he acts like one of the Muppets.

I'm going to sound like a broken record on top of all of the other commenters, but this standard release misses some key notes (pun unintended) by cutting "When Love is Gone". It adds a lot more poignancy to the Scrooge-Belle relationship, and the final song in the movie is a reprise of this song. Here's a link to the full scene with that song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbawsayImds And you talk about how heartbreaking it is to see a Muppet Tiny Tim, yet Joe has the gall to suggest a Muppet "Les Mis"???? Yeah, sign me up for two hours of watching Bean Bunny as Gavroche. I'm sure that battlement scene's going to go great...

I will die on the hill of this being Michael Caine’s greatest acting achievement. He only signed on when they promised he could play it as a real Scrooge. It would be so easy to slip into a campier performance with muppets, but he goes and gives what I would say is the best Ebenezer Scrooge performance ever. And he is acting against FELT. Just incredible.

Laura Dawson

Absolutely agree with what you say about Dickens still being relevant. I remember reading Great Expectations when I was a school and one quotation from that really stuck with me: ‘In the little world in which children have their existence, whosoever brings them up, there is nothing so finely perceived and so finely felt as injustice.’ At the time my dad was trying to force me to study subjects I hated, for no good reason, and 16 year old me was like, ‘Holy crap, dude!’

Youtalkingtome

Patrick Stewart performing a one man show of this would be incredible! Jim Henson was an absolute legend. I will read that asap!

Youtalkingtome

I thought he did a great job as far as the singing goes. Is he putting out a record? No. However, so shocked at the level of commitment here. This was a fantastic movie.

Youtalkingtome

It's shocking how well this works. It's funny but not a parody. I've never seen anything quite like it. Truly. Makes me wanna revisit muppet Treasure Island

Laura Dawson

Probably my favourite Christmas movie. My sister and I would watch it every year when we were kids. We still manage to have a re-watch most years and her daughter has started watching it with us too. Just so utterly charming and well made. Having Gonzo and Rizzo as narrators was a stroke of genius!

nj

i'm also completely on board for a muppet les mis.

Allison O

The commitment is unbelievable. And when he goes off key it’s perfectly in character for what you would expect if Scrooge suddenly burst into song.

Youtalkingtome

I totally agree with you, Gonzo and Rizzo narrating really helped this movie. Tonally this was so clever. I really wish Rizzo would have been in the 2011 Muppets film
