They next few episodes are so good, and I love how we get these little drips of Ashford's backstory. And the Anna friendship with the spoiled rich girl is nice despite their completely different personalities. Ashford's actor actually played Oppenheimer in 2009 on PBS. The show was called "American Experience" "The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer" it was half movie/half documentary. Free to watch on the PBS website. I thought that was relevant since you guys liked Oppenheimer the movie and it's Ashford in a completely different role.

Avasarala is the one who brought Mao down in the book and imprisoned him for life. So, I've never figured out why Clarissa/Melba went after Holden...maybe more accessible? Tilly was one of my favorite characters in book 3, so she's nothing like the show portrays, and the same with Monica. Drummers speech!

I love how fast you can perceive Melba's issues. Most reactors understandably dislike her because what she is doing is petty and small. This part of the story is super condensed and Melba is a POV character in the novel so we get to see a ton in her head, which is harder to do in the show. But the small morsels they put in are subtle, and you got them right away. Well done.

Melba actually does get mentioned in passing in Season 2, when Errinwright talks to Chrisjen shortly after freezing Jules-Pierre's assets: "His eldest daughter Clarissa, might be about to crack and willing to cut a deal."

Deana DeWall

Clarissa is the younger daughter. Errinwright mentioned the "other" daughter and son(s).

Melba annoyed me so much when I saw this lol but i like your insight on her character it’s different than from most other reactions or reviews I’ve seen of her

'Melba' is younger in the books, but she's the older sister in the show. Ty confirmed it on Ty and that Guy. (Also while it's fairly minor we haven't heard 'Melba' called by any other name yet). But you're right that Errinwright doesn't say "eldest" in that S2 scene. Their ages are never confirmed in the show itself.

I've always loved the conversation about "nostalgia" between Ashford and Naomi and I think is one of the best written scenes in the series. I think it tells us so much about both characters. While Ashford is trying to tell Naomi that she's looking at the Roci-crew through rose-tinted glasses, what the conversation really does is make Naomi realize that what she was really looking at through rose-tinted nostalgia glasses was her time with the OPA. Despite how great Drummer's speech is, Naomi is noticeably uncomfortable with it and is the only one not cheering. Back in S1, Naomi talked about how she disliked these types of speeches and rallying cries because they draw people to a flag and can get people killed. This type of stuff is why she originally walked away from the OPA. Eros and all the other Belter suffrage during the first two seasons understandably made her nostalgic for the OPA again, but she's realizing her place is really with Holden and the Roci-crew.

Dominique Tipper had to really keep it together during Cara Gee nailing the Belter speech and all the other actors/extras chiming in because it was sooooo passionate, she wanted so hard to chime in as well.

Meg, I just wanted to say that your empathy for "Melba" is unique among reactors to this show and that I found your heartfelt declaration of that empathy really moving. Melba certainly is not doing very good or very smart things right now, but she is a product of a very unhealthy upbringing. That doesn't excuse her behavior, of course, but it certainly helps explain it, and for you to respond to her actions with such generous spirit is quite lovely. I had the good fortune to grow up in a loving, relatively functional family (at least as functional as any family is), but I know quite a few people who have been not nearly as fortunate, and I sometimes wonder how they didn't all end up psychologically paralyzed...or worse. Fortunately, the human spirit can be surprisingly resilient, with the right help. It's nice to see you putting the pain in your own past to such positive use. I'm sure it's constant work, but it's so great that you're dong it.

Deana DeWall

Since their ages are never mentioned in the show, it doesn't matter what Ty said. As for Melba's real name, it also doesn't matter because the show is completely different than the books.

I so agree with this observation. Here is a reactor with first hand knowledge of what Clarissa's life has been like and so many reactors feel that her story is not fleshed out well and yet here it is in all its terrible glory being told to us through the flash backs but it takes someone like Meg to truly understand it and sympathize with her. I loved that reaction SO much! (I also grew up in a fairly stable emotional blended family which I have come to realize is a bit unusual! but I am also an empath so my sympathies were always with Clarissa. It makes me even more excited for future reactions!

Varun Laks

I was wrong, the OP was right. I'm rewatching the series right now, and Errinwright does call Clarissa the eldest daughter in S02E11 - 'Here There Be Dragons'. So it is canon to the show that Clarissa is older.
