Hey everyone!

The lathe has been glaring at me for 4 months, it’s time to put it to work. And by "it", I mean me. Which, as you might expect, never goes quickly. And while I can’t promise a super satisfying reveal, can I tempt you with a negative side project total? Who would have believed it?!

Enjoy!

I thought you had an issue with the carriage motor. It is designed identically. I had the same issue with those pesky springs, made brass rings with a set screw and fixed it right up.

Max Goldstein

I was a little surprised that you didn’t change out the other spring while you were in there, but seeing as how the original repair didn’t work, it might’ve been for the best to not mess with anything that wasn’t broken.

Jeff Loffert

Nice job on the I.D. grind Brandon! And the electrical sparks are always fun to watch......when they're someone else's! :) So, thanks for that! Do I sense a heat treat oven in your future? Would definitely be a worthwhile companion to the grinders.

Matt B

Tell me tell me you fixed both sides of the grinders motor... Otherwise a side project is coming again.

Jeffrey Spoor

that spring should absolutely not been 'free ballin' it in there' LMAO. Another great job Brandon

Ah, it seems that you let the magic smoke out 😅 always worrying when that happens. As a side note - an old friend of mine who's an electrical engineer and an overall wizz of electronics once told me - when soldering, you should never blow on the solder you just applied to cool it down/blow away the smoke. The idea is that the water in your breath can contaminate the solder joint, thus causing impurities and eventually cracks. I'm sure that's a serious case of "being overly cautious", but thinking about it, it kinda makes sense. Absolutely not a deal breaker considering the application, but probably worth knowing 😉 Brilliant work as always, Brandon.

Copious amounts of Brakekleen ❤️

Locane

I have to say, unfortunately, how disappointed I am you didn't do both springs 😞 If the first one failed, how long till you're taking it apart again?? 😢 Lol

Locane

I commented too fast. Serves me right for commenting while watching 😂

Michael Faragher

Look, nobody denied I was in the right place, but I was just thinking how satisfying it was to watch you take apart these assemblies, and how you don't see neat castings like that anymore . . . then you commented on your inner 12 year old. Yup. Right place.

Pierre Alie

A good friend of mine says they work hard to put the smoke in at the factory, careful you don’t let it out!

100% an oven is in my future. Been on the list for a long time honestly and just never bit the bullet as they say. Thanks, Jeff!

Inheritance Machining

Nah you are right, I only repaired the one 😂 somehow I literally never occurred to me to upgrade both. Watch it fail the next time i use the grinder 🤦‍♂️

Jeff Loffert

I'd never considered having one, until I got a surface grinder. They go together like peanut butter and jelly!

Sri Ram Neravati

Anyone know what the actual hyperbolic issue is called? I'd like to read up on it. Sounds like an interesting phenomenon

Pierre Alie

Can’t wait to see what you have in mind for hardening and getting things to size! Exciting to see more progress on the lathe curious to see it working in its fully restored glory! As always a highlight to my day getting to watch your videos! Thanks Brandon.

My inner electrical child in me is crying. You made my inner child 😭... I hope your happy!
