The only way to fix something is one step at a time. Even if it's something "simple". But that doesn't mean it's gonna be easy!

Enjoy!

This was a amazing video! I have not even thought about making your own tap like that even though it makes so much sense! Fantastic work as always!! :D

You've done it again Brandon! What I wouldn't give to spend a week in the shop with you! Keep them coming!

This video's noticeably more fast-paced than the usual upload. Seen as I usually watch your videos to just tone out the world to and relax, I'm not the biggest fan of that. But the content of the video's just as interesting as always; let's see what else you'll be doing with this new lathe.

Another wonderful video. I did have to take notes though. Like how you took a year off my life whipping out the pliers before you made the spanner, or how when you break out the CAD, you know we're in the deep end. But what happened to your coarse/fine machinist's jack? Was it not suitable because you wanted a center? And isn't Blondihacks great? Pressure vessels, castings, silver solder, and engines. So much fun. What I find really interesting to think about is how this machine was absolutely not made the way you're fixing it. Like with the acme thread, every step, operation, and jig was custom made for speed of production during the initial construction, and now you're coming in and doing things "by hand" and we can see how that sometimes varies. I'm interested to see where your precision and hand fitting can elevate this design above the original. Not to say the original design was lacking, it just had different production requirements, and rebuilding it to as-built dimensions may leave you with something absolutely unique in terms of performance. Or it's a windmill, but we've all tilted against those. Great work, love the tap.

Thanks And that's surprising to me actually. This video had way more non-talking segments than any before. Unless that's not what you mean

That's a Yahtzee! Cool headed thinking on the tailstock for the mill. Glad SP1 got the S-grinder back on line and worked a treat on the cutting tool. Impressive as usual Brandon, even using CAD for trig, and looked like you used it for the design drawings too (printer on the drafting table ;-D)...such a cad. ;-P Thanks for the Holiday treat! Happy Holidays to You and Mrs. IM!!

haha I generally avoid CAD but it certainly got me out of a bid on this one! I considered the jack for that but needed side to side support as well. I've had a need for a center like that for a long time but it never occured to me until now to "fixture" something up like that rather than make a whole dedicated too. That's in interesting though about the mass production vs manual fitting. I think in some cases the mass produced means are going to be a little better. I actually think that will hold true for this lead screw since grinding generally results in a higher precision. Assuming everything was done correctly that is!

😂 I don't know if getting the SG back in operation is a blessing or a curse. Project times tend to double when that machine makes an appearance haha. CAD has its uses! Got me out a pickle on that one haha You only saw the printed drawing because the main video has a sponsorship for the CAD software. Thanks as always PJ and Happy Holidays to you too!

Oh how happy it makes me to see the surface grinder getting some action again 😁 With that said, I must point out that this video violates the Box of Shame cruelty act of 1995, which states that a box needs to be fed at least once every two weeks 🤣

Michael Faragher

Excellent thoughts all around! I missed the side to side deflection entirely. And you're correct regarding the grinding on the threads, but some of those issues are only for interchangeable parts. Fitting the bearings to the screw, including making the tap from the turning tool, can make up for any individual irregulates. But I digress, Happy Holidays to you and yours!

James A Williams

Amazing how those side projects get in the way, but they're so gratifying as well. Love the content, and some day I hope to have a HLV myself, to restore! When looking at parts for them it seems as if I'll never afford to repair or restore, but making parts is always a good option. Keep the restore going!

Jim Hinze

Did you be chance make a drawing of the tap? Or be willing to share how you calculated what the PD needed to be? Really loved this episode..

James Riordan

…and most importantly, no visit to the BOS 😱

Thanks for the video, entertaining education can’t get any better!

I also like the reference to Quinn. It’s so cool that all my favourite YouTubers shout out to each other!

I did not make a drawing but I found this ACME thread calculator helpful. Let's you enter any custom value. https://www.engineersedge.com/hardware/acme-threads-calculator.htm

If money is not an issue Shapr3D or the Autodesk sweet. Which one are you going for, for shop drawings?
