Mariner, its time to tell your story.

You were on the money with Locarno being played by the same actor as Tom Paris. Supposedly they were considering having Locarno on Voyager, but changed plans and made a new character with a similar backstory. Besides Wesley, Sito Jaxa was one of the cadets involved in the banned flight maneuver that got another cadet killed. She returned in the season 7 TNG episode "Lower Decks" if you want to see her eventual fate that Mariner alluded to here. Seems like this show wanted to pay tribute to their namesake episode by making Sito a key part of Mariner's backstory. As for Locarno's age, the Academy incident happened in 2368 and Lower Decks is currently in 2381, so it's been 13 years. So If he was like a college senior at 22ish, he's a particularly grizzled 35 year old in this episode.

It's apocryphal, but if they had done with the Voyager pilot being Nick, they woulda had to give residuals to the writers of "The First Command", but they liked Robert Duncan McNeil so they just made a new character. They were doing a show-ey off-ey flight pattern because they were "Delta Squad" (super elite student pilots) for a graduation ceremony, they screwed it up and one of them died. Everyone knew they were shady as hell, but since they couldn't prove it (they all backed each other's story), they were about to get away with it until Wesley grew a spine 2 acts too late and let everyone know. Nick took responsibility and got booted out of the academy and everyone else (including Mariner's friend) had to repeat the year. Alas, no Gates McFadden... But just wait. She shows up in X-Men 97. (Also, there's a great youtube video from Trek Culture talking about her career which proves how much she was SLUMMING it being on Next gen. Good watch)

Mariner's reveal hit me SO hard the first time (and the second, and the third, and the. ..) around, especially with them tying it to Sito and the original Lower Decks episode. Hearing Sito's name literally made me burst into tears on the spot. The way Mariner's story has been told and allowed to unfold over the last four seasons, the way they have let her progress be messy and non-linear, its truly one of the best representations of trauma and healing I've seen depicted. On a lighter note I love all the Star Wars references in this episode even down to the way the music score is clearly much more SW than Trek and the use of wipe cuts between scenes. Just delightful! Also "Captain did you know the uniforms had pockets" makes me legitimately laugh out loud every time. I'm sooooo excited for your video for the finale, its a doozy (which I guess you know by now haha), welcome to the suffering with the rest of us waiting for S5 after that ending.

Also totally agree about Ma'ah I love him! I hope we get to see more of him next season too!

I joined the patreon specifically to go back to the start of Lower Decks to watch the full reaction with you :) I'm low on disc space though so can't go back to the start yet, once season 4 is done I'll delete that and download s1 and start over. It's also been a joy watching you do TOS, it's been a while since I last watched that. Your joy in Trek matches my own and not to be too parasocial, I really enjoy "hanging out" watching Trek with you, thank you for the time you've put in and sharing your enjoyment :)

Thank you so much for the kind words, my friend! And I absolutely love hanging out with all of you :)

The Star Wars references were great! Season 4 has been so amazing. I find it so hard to believe that the execs at Paramount saw that and thought, 'Yeah lets cancel it.' Makes absolutely zero sense to me. On a happier note, thank you for always being here with a kind word and insight into each episode. Means the world to me, my friend :)

About Beckett speaking Bynar. In the episode "We'll Always Have Tom Paris" Beckett tells Tendi, "Oh, I'm always dating bad boys. Bad girls, bad gender-nonbinary babes, ruthless alien masterminds, bad Bynars..." So I guess she dated a Bynar at some point. :-)

Another thing, when Mariner was unpacking her trauma, she focused a lot on Sito but we can't forget she was serving on Deep Space Nine during the height of the Dominion War. As far as I can determine, the timeline went something like this. 2370 - Ensign Sito is killed by Cardassians while serving on the Enterprise. 2372 - Beckett Mariner graduates Starfleet Academy 2373 - 2375 - Dominion War. Mariner serves on DS9 during this time. As Mariner says, "there was no honor, just massacres" in the Dominion War. She was probably no more than 22 at the time and still reeling from the death of a dear friend when suddenly she found herself on the front lines.

Ooooo great catch! I remember her saying that but I forgot she said 'bad Bynars'. That's great :D

I saw this the day the episode dropped, and when I first heard Sito's name, I was like: "WAIT. STOP. Are they tying Mariner's trauma back to Sito in TNG? Holy [bleep]-ing [bleep]!" Then I had a week to wait for the finale, and had two thoughts in the interim: I hope they get the actress out of retirement if we're going to see Sito again; and they better not pull some melodramatic crap to 'save' her (which I saw some people online predicting).
