Yeah, your buddy has good taste. The Sentinel design from the show is the one that attacks and destroys Genosha at the beginning of the Morrison run. And it killed 16 million mutants. And remember Madelyne’s vision in the first episode? Same music playing (Ace of Base).

as for the lower team numbers, one thing that was odd about the 92 series was that the team was the same. Colossus shows up? Well, he’s gonna wander off before next episode. This one not so much. They change the intro to reflect new teammates (they swapped Charles for Magneto and put her hair in a ponytail when Jean replaced Maddy) so they do recruit.

This episode is outstanding - maybe the best Marvel TV thing ever? Certainly better than some of the movies. Lenore Zann, the voice actor who plays Rogue in both this and the original series, did a fantastic acting job, especially in that last line which always makes me tear up. The score is excellent as well, maybe the best in this season outside of one track that's coming up in a few episodes. And I think Gambit did die at some point in the comics, but to be honest I only have a vague recollection of it, which means it's probably from 'round about the time I stopped following the comics regularly - late 90s/early 2000s.

Good to know. I figured something had to be done given the recent losses. AND dear G-d 16 million mutants?!? I think I'll need to check that storyline out.

Yup we stopped right regularly reading right around the same time. And I couldn't agree more that this is one of the very best tv offerings Marvel has given us.

What I appreciate about this series is the way it pulls elements from various different X-Men storylines and weaves them into something new. This episode pulls heavily from the Wild Sentinel attack on Genosha at the start of Morrison's run, but there are many elements of other X-Men stories mixed in. Yet it manages to tell a story that isn't just coherent but amazingly well-realized and emotional in under 40 minutes.

Also, on a personal note... I really didn't like Gambit when he was first introduced back in the comics. Not sure why, it might have been that I wasn't a fan of the Rogue / Gambit relationship that was so central to so many of his stories. His portrayal in this episode though? Simply amazing. Not just his heroism at the end either. It did an amazing job of making me care about his relationship with Rogue, both through his interactions with her on screen and through Nightcrawler's observations about it.

Warp Reactor

Completely agree. I felt the same way about Gambit and I too loved how they developed him in this series. Now I need a 10 part season on the Mutant Massacre :)
