The old man was played by Jon Lormer, who appeared in the S1E11 & S1E12 episode "The Menagerie" as one of the shipwrecked scientists.

Great reaction and observations about this episode.

I was curious, given the apparent Japanese influence with the kimonos and Yonada sounds Japanese, so I looked up what it might mean. Yonada in the Fabrini language means "hope" which is a little on the nose but given Plum's plot armour and obviousness that he wasn't gonna die, it does feel fitting :)

Spock: ...if memory serves me correctly Greg: I'm sure it does For Spock doesn't have a Swiss cheese brain 😉

It seems that in terms of the society of Yonada, Leonard McCoy and Natira are still married. I would have wished to have seen an episode somewhere to provide more insight of the reunion of McCoy, aka Plum, and Natira when Yonda made planetfall and perhaps the joining of the new colony of Yonada into the Federation. According to Memory Alpha's website, the book prop representing the Forbini knowledge is also the same prop used as the book used to outline the gangs of Chicago in S2E17 "A Piece of the Action"
