One of the scariest Doctor Who episodes of all time and you never even see a monster. Just terrified people showing their true natures.

You're right about the role that Donna could have played. I think that speaks to the necessity of the companion in general, really. Yes, it's fun for the doctor to have a friend to explore the universe with but they keep him grounded. His "I'm so clever" schtick is arrogant in a funny way (because we know it true and he's an empathetic person to balance it) but it doesn't always translate to people who don't have context. Not just that but his over-enthusiasm at catastrophe can be... alien. The companion acts as both a translator and a leash around some of the doctor's counter-productive idiosyncrasies. This episode is so pessimistic and dark. So often, this show is preaching to our "better angels" but we all know our lesser demons sometimes get control of the steering wheel. For how much sorrow and horror there is in this show, there's almost always a hopeful through line. This episode is just grim though. One of the unique things about this story is that it's a "bottle neck episode" so almost the entire story took place in one room (think the purple pen episode of community or the episode of friends where they get ready for Ross's event). This kind of storytelling can be a fun and interesting challenge but it is first and foremost CHEAP. They were counting pennies in order to push money towards later episodes. Bottleneck episodes don't always work because they rely so heavily on dialogue and acting performance (since there's no room for changing set pieces, action, or even complex plot) so if you don't nail those, it's just boring. Doctor Who went the extra mile and took out one of the two main characters! But honestly, they nailed it and this episode is a masterpiece. Finally, shoutout to the score. It's incredible and visceral and elevates the horror massively. So good.

that's such a good point about how hard it can be to pull off a bottle neck episode - this was really incredible! and i agree, the score definitely contributed to how scary this was!!

yes!! the moment that i still keep thinking about is how the doctor was asking them saying "you wouldn't push her out to her death would you?" and they all said YES. very creepy and scary, and really just unfortunately human
