Dear Patrons,

A mere five and a half years after we started our epic history of Venice - we are back to complete the story!

We made some small improvements to the original episode, and combined it with new content to create a giant 36 minute episode. The result is a whirlwind tour across several centuries - I hope you enjoy it, and I'm sure you'll discover a few new things on the journey.

Keen-eared listeners will notice where we switch from our 2018 voice-over recording to 2024 - we've mixed it as well as we can, but it would be interesting to get your feedback - is it distracting, or no big deal?

Typos for Merch is in effect - BUT please be aware, we have not attempted, nor would it be possible, to create a completely accurate, up to date European map for every year we cover. With that in mind, we are obviously still very keen to know if we've made any major blunders!

Thanks again for supporting our work - enjoy the video, and we will be back soon with Napoleon's march across the Alps.

Toby

Excellent video. Ironically never watched the Part I on the History of Venice on your channel. Perhaps I ought to!

Gage Hardesty

It's weird how such great Republics can fall to a legendary conqueror in just a year whereas the other kingdoms barely made a dent on Venice except for the Ottomans.

TankerBricks

Don't know if this counts for the typo but it says 1796 Republic of Venice falls, thought it actually fell on the 12th of May 1797 when the Last Doge formally dissolved the Serene Republic of Venice- admittedly they did allow the French passage of troops though their lands.

TankerBricks

Also thought the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia was created in 1815, Venice returned to Austrian rule on the 20th of April 1814 and with the collapse of the Kingdom of Italy, the region of Veneto followed.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 16:16 the first Italian war actually lasted for two years not 5 years so 1494-1495 is the correct timeline

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 17:12 the date the alliance between France and Venice occurred in 1499 not 98.

Finn McCabe

We’re so back! Can’t wait for WW2 EHTV!

TankerBricks

Hadn't spotted those ones lol. Was looking more towards the end of the video for typos....

Gage Hardesty

Found a missed treaty at 19:10 there were actually two treaties the first one shown at the top and a second one that was missed called the Treaty of Brussels in case you need to know.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 19:38 I believe Philippe was actually the Ambassador to Venice in 1494-95 not 1484.

jack daniels

24:30 Argos is spelled wrongly as 'agros' in the video.

jack daniels

24:55 and others: Baghdad is spelled as 'bagdad'. Is this intentional?

TankerBricks

At 32:22, Borders of Papal States are smaller than they should be, dark blue area should actually be Cream coloured, as the borders extended North but not entirely West, didn't think that the Republic of Genoa was THAT big! Duchy of Modena and Tuscany missing, along with the Duchy of Parma, I think that is about it. ( Bibliography Looked at the Italy in 1796 AD image as reference as to what's been missed!)

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 24:16 Mehmed the Conqueror ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1451-1481 not the 1551-1581.

Gage Hardesty

Found two typos at 24:28 I think you either misspelled the names of the two Greek cities of Agros and Negraponte either in the timeline or the map look.

Victor Deleon

Amazing work as always! The transition into the (relatively) modern time period of Venice’s history nearly brought me to tears. So much beauty in History! Happy to be here, cheers!

Christian Gundersen

After all these years, i'm so happy i got to watch the complete history of Venice, by EH. It brings me a genuine joy, that the team went back and completed this piece of history. Thank you and look forward to your forthcoming projects :)

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 24:59 I think the name Modon is correct but not Modone

Gage Hardesty

Small miscalculation at 30:27 it was the Siege of Athens sure but it's known as the Siege of the Acropolis of Athens

Gage Hardesty

Um at 32:27 didn't the Map look different when you showed Napoleon's First Italian campaign because I don't remember the Map of the Italian campaign being like this so small graphic error.

Gage Hardesty

Small typo missed the Republic of Venice actually fell in 1797 around 32:40

Gage Hardesty

That's all the typos I could see likewise choose your winner for the best typo find not by who found it first since finding it first makes things too easy for people who see it early.

Gage Hardesty

I saw your comment that's why I replied to your previous comment believing that Epic History should at least allow the both of us to share the credit since we both saw it.

luc

Always the best

Filip Petrovic

This was beautiful. It brought a tear to my eye. :,)

Raymond Chiu

oh my goodness! is this the day pigs can fly? never though I lived to see this day! happy days indeed!

Andrea Postiglione

At 34:37 the unified Kindom of Italy of 1866 boudaries are actually showing parts such as Nice&Savoy and Rome in green. Those should be of different color if you have chance to change it as they were not Italian in 1866 but you know that already 😁

John Dominguez

Wow, what a great work here. Kinda interesting how Venice just slowly deterioriated but I suppose that's just the way of things. With all that trade and interaction, wonder why they got lapped behind in shipping and naval tech

Keogh Mathuin

Great as ever. Would have been nice to include Radetzky by name. Our trachenberg plan hero!

Gage Hardesty

Small saying problem at 1:12 the actual first Doge was elected in 697 AD and his name was Paulo Lucio Anafesto.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 4:27 the construction of the Arsenale actually began in 1104 not 1103.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 7:16 the year that the war of Curzola actually started at 1295-99.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 7:32 the exact War of Chioggia is 1378-81

Gage Hardesty

That's all the typos of the Rise of Venice if anything I hoped I fixed more of your previous problems than before.

Henry Rieken

Slight typo at 24:14 - Mehmed the Conqueror ruled between 1451-1481

Medin Burnic

Superb detail! It is truly remarkable what this state managed to achieve even with such perilous circumstances. I'm wishing I'll get a chance to visit Venice one day. Truly beautiful looking city!

MitchyCool

Amazing video as always guys keep it! In regards to the bit at the end, I’m just gonna put this out there and then leave it at that: Water is weird in that unlike most elements which get smaller as they condense (turn from a liquid to a solid), water actually gets bigger when it turns into a solid, ice. So people who are like “the ice capes are disappearing”, even if that is true, the ice is taking up MORE space right now AS ICE. When it melts and turns into water, it takes up LESS space than it did as ice. There. I’m done.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Tanker, this will count as the first spot of a typo in this episode! Congrats, we'll send a message to arrange your prize.

Kevin Xu

Not sure what your addition is trying to say, everyone agrees that man made climate change is a threat to low lying areas, either through changes in storm patterns and intensity or rising sea levels in general Various US coastal areas, from Washington State to Houston to Hampton Roads are all taking sea level rise and “coastal resilience” projects seriously Seems logical that Venice would be the same way

Juan Manuel van der Zee

Fantastic video, really intriguing! Never knew Venice was such a major power almost 1000 years ago. I am hoping to visit this city soon, now knowing its history will make seeing some of the sights even more interesting. Keep it up guys!

PastInNumbers

Constantinople in 1200 / Pope in 1500 / Napoleon in 1800 / Us in 2100: “We should take Venice… &push it somewhere else!” Seriously tho, Nice work fellas 🤝

EpicHistoryTV

Actually Parma and Tuscany are on the map, just not labelled, for space. Modena had already been abolished by this stage, and the unlabelled blue block to the northeast is the Cispadane Republic.

EpicHistoryTV

There seems a lot of uncertainty around the precise date, so not a typo unless you have a solid source.

Pierre Arnaud

Great video. I was impatient for a complete one on the incredible history of this city. You make me want to go back there and walk around those streets filled of history.

Baker

Great video! Venice’s part in the sack of Constantinople will forever stain her legacy.

Michael Hopkins

Wow. We NEED the soundtrack to this video asap! 😂

Swagalag

I'm so happy that you finished this series. I remember watching it years ago when I found this channel and binged all the videos at once. I was so disappointed there was no part 2. I remember asking if you would ever finish and you said something along the lines of "maybe!" lol well maybe is here finally! Hopefully one day you will decide to keep the history of Russia portion going past WWI as well! Great video as always!

Dan.Gryn

Thank You! Beautiful work!

MarbleHit

I did not expected to be interested in the history of Venice but your presentation really kept me in! Also Toby id reallyyy love to see a 1 episode special of the Siege of Constantinople. Being a Greek myself im always interested in Byzantine History and i believe it was a pivotal moment in the history of warfare. Coupled with your unique presentation it would make an excellent video i believe...

EpicHistoryTV

I'm sure we'll have more Greek history before too long - it's one of my greatest loves. But probably more likely to be Classical, than Byzantine..

John Fekete

Work has kept Me tied down since this beautiful piece about Venice was posted. Few mins in & I was hooked have watched it three times so far!!!!! Thank You so much for this! & So excited for Marengo! Also still mind blown that Tomorrow is the anniversary of Murat capturing Mustafa Pasha after a gun shot wound to the face. The Battle Of Aboukir 🔥🇨🇵⚔️🇹🇷🔥 this is a Birthday gift in an of its own 💚

Martin E

Great video again as always <3

Justin Bailey

I don’t believe a single one of your videos has missed the mark! Thank you for the hours and hours of enjoyable, high quality historical videos.

Aiden Adema

i cant believe how well this is done. a major network should pick it up

Stuart Carver

Makes me want to return to Venice but you’re forgetting the real question here…..what was the name of the cat and how did it go into battle? With a mini outfit sat on his shoulder? Isn’t the cat mummified in a museum today?
