Naah I don't think Hachiman is being stupid, he's very aware of the situation. He's just unclear on what to do here. They've just found themselves in the exact same situation as the Hayama clique. Its fitting that we end the season stuck on the problem we started the season on. Its the exact same scenario. Someone likes the other, but they don't know how their feelings will be received. They've all been taking the first steps to challenging the status quo but are not there yet to completely destroy it. That's why there's still so much vagueness and tiptoeing around the issue.

What Yui was about to do at the end was very selfish. But I give her props for being the first one to make a decision in this snafu of a love triangle. Yui knew Yukino wasn't ready yet so she decided to take Hachiman for herself, and Yukino was just going to allow it. Which was wrong, and Hachiman knew it. Yukino's struggle has always been her independance. She's always been accused by her sister as always relying on someone else to make the decision for her. Whether it was her mother or Hachiman. In this instance it was the same thing again. Yui was making her decision, giving Yukino her only option left to take which was to just allow it. Hachiman couldn't stand that and denied the proposal. This episode was a declaration of their desires. Hachiman just wants something genuine. Yui wants it all (Hachiman as her man and Yukino as her closest best friend), and Yukino.. looks like we'll finally hear what she wants to say in the next season.

8man perception of Yui's feelings at this point of the story is still a mystery among the fandom. But most people think that he's actually aware of everyone feelings but chooses reject the reality due to his slef-depricating view. And that is hard for him to stop viewing himself in that way, cause usually a person doesn't move on from way of life that hurts them so easily; people tend to relapse until they can move on, sometimes those processes take years even, basically an addiction. P.D. I gotta be honest, this scene is one of the strangest adaptations I've seen of a light novel. But I get that it is hard to adapt such a scene from a written media to animation.
