I'm finally here!! Love Audrey and finally had to hop over after the ATW lyric reaction! This short film destroys me every time and I love it. The first time I watched it, the fight about the dinner made me have to pause because it triggered me and made me re-evaluate even *more* of a past abusive relationship that I feel like I'm constantly, five years later still finding new things to be shocked about. Which is just to say that the casting, the directing, the writing, absolutely everything about this short film enhances the song which is already amazing on its' own, and I'm constantly amazed by how good Taylor is at anything she sets her mind to!! And I wanted to say that your reaction to that fight made me clap because I was like YES! Spot on!!

2023-12-23 21:02:10 I'm late, but thought I'd toss in my cents, too ;) I always saw 'half my weight' as a soldier who has been to war drastically loses weigh and returns home a gaunt survivor. Reeling would be like being sucker punched and sent spinning away off-balance & disorientated, thus the spin of a fishing reel or such. Some say the scarf symbolized her 'first time', but in a more recently released song it sure sounds like her first was with John who she dated at age nineteen, with Jake coming after...but only those involved really know for sure. So Taylor confirmed in an interview that there is no physical scarf and that it’s a metaphor. But that would be what she leaves that at. Which I totally respect. So many have said they think should’ve would’ve could’ve with “girl me back my girlhood, it was mine first” was referring to said thing but I would argue that she’s saying her innocence in her first love transitioning from a “child” to an “adult” and not anything more than that. But that she will never get that back because he “took it from her”

Tbh I hate myself for even analysing this particular aspect but here comes the thesis that's been bouncing around my head since TS stated herself that the red scarf is a metaphor. She describes it as reminding him of innocence and smelling like her, and "nights that you made me your own" and just the whole "red" theme that runs right through the album, and the way her language and the way she describes relationships in red and later albums is very different to those prior.... I just can't imagine it being about anything else. The girlhood line is super powerful I agree, but it doesn't read to me the same way. I've never heard anyone refer to their virginity as girlhood but I have heard many people over the years conflate it with the term innocence. Wouldve could've should've makes me reflect on being pursued by much older men when I was 17-18 and although I never slept with any of them I did date one guy when I was 17 and a virgin, he told me he was 21, turns out he was 27, we only dated for about 4 weeks and didn't do much more than make out..... but the anger I feel now as an adult myself, thinking about the way he pursued me ... the way even now 27 years later, recollecting what a manipulator and predator he was makes me want to jump in the shower and scrub myself with soap for hours. That feeling, that simmering rage, the inability to move on from it the way I have from other relationships over time is articulated perfectly in would've could've should've, whereas ATW reminds me more of the 18 year old boy who relentlessly pursued me, deflowered me then dumped me. Boy I had some big feelings about that at the time but decades later I laugh at how infatuated I was with that dope. 😂 Geez sorry about the essay, my ADHD meds haven't kicked in yet this morning 🙈
