omg this came out on my birthday and i missed it despite it being arguably the best stranger things moment (and the most relatable for me). as someone who has been in max’s shoes somewhat, i think it’s important to note that max isn’t grieving billy for the person he actually was. she’s grieving the potential that can now never be. i have the same feelings towards my deceased abusive brother— i was so pleased with how they wrote her letter in a way that didn’t gloss over how he actually was, while still acknowledging the sheer grief.
