Marcus Cassius Scaeva [Heroic Spirit]
The Left Hand of Caesar
The most trusted subordinate of Gaius Julius Caesar.
A soldier who served under him during early campaigns into Britain, Scaeva distinguished himself in battle against the Celtic tribes, but was forced to retreat in shame. Instead of condemnation, however, Caesar rewarded him, and from there began their relationship, forming the beginnings of a bond of loyalty.
Scaeva served under Caesar for many years, culminating in the civil war with Caesar’s rival, Pompey. Left with only his squad, Scaeva was tasked with defending a critical point, and he and his cohort held out for several hours against the enemy’s advance. Scaeva was wounded several times, including the shot that famously struck his left eye, and even he began to tire. The enemy was prepared to accept his surrender.
However, as the enemy commanders approached to demand he give up, Scaeva ripped his sword, dulled from constant combat, from its sheath, split one man open and slit the other’s neck, then continued to fight until the battle was over. He and his fellow legionnaires held that critical point to the end. As a result, Caesar eventually defeated Pompey and put an end to the civil war.
For his bravery and loyalty, Scaeva was elevated to Primus Pilus, and he continued to serve with distinction throughout the rest of his career.
Truly, he was a fearsome warrior.
