Hadrian’s Wall [Noble Phantasm]
The Empire’s Northern Face
Anti-Country Noble Phantasm. A sturdy construct of stone commissioned by Emperor Hadrian. When materialized, it forms a wall to demarcate the boundary of an area, establishing all of one side as one territory and all of the other as “separate.” Rather than a simple defensive construct, it is a ruler’s tool to draw a line that forms the absolute boundary of his dominion, although it is a robust defensive fortification as well.
A historical artifact, well-established in history. Even though it has been weathered and diminished through the ravages of time, neglect, and the harsh elements, it still stands in the modern era, and parts of it are even subject to local folk legends. It is said that the ghosts of Roman soldiers still inhabit several of the milecastles along its length.
Historically, Hadrian’s Wall served several purposes, and all or none of them could have been Hadrian’s true motive for having it built. Primarily, it kept the northern tribes of Scotland and Ireland from invading Roman Britain, forming a defensive wall against their assaults. However, it also kept Romans in, allowing the local governors to control who came and left the empire’s borders more easily.
As a result, this “territory construction” is the primary function of the Noble Phantasm, and any defensive power it might possess is only secondary. Under certain circumstances, one or the other might become more emphasized, but in its base form, the former is stronger than the latter.
In this work, it was used to separate the two Romes, solidifying the territory of the United Empire within its borders, which further strengthened the territory-based Noble Phantasms of other Heroic Spirits who gathered under Romulus.
