I adore this episode and the conclusion of the night for ed and stede is just so so sweet, they're such a good balance for each other and I ship it so hard T_T Izzy's interactions really highlight how repressed and stuck in his show of traditional masculinity he is. He sneers and is an asshole, but you can see him eyeing Lucius's lips... Also, fun history fact, lead-based makeup was in fashion for years to whiten the appearance of the skin, so that face paint is pretty accurate (and also potentially deadly). Historical fashion (dyes and makeup) are bonkers and often contained really horrifying ingredients (like arsenic, lead and belladonna).

Stede got the info on the rich people from the servants. Rich people don't even pay attention to them and they have all the tea. I really like how this show handles classism. The fact they were pulling an Egyptian prince pyramid scheme was hilarious and fully support them. XD

As to the facepaint, I'm finding several reasons. But it seems to indicate that one with a pale complexion did not spend much time outside and was therefore well-off. In case the voice sounded familiar, Antoinette was played by Kristen Schaal who, if you recognized her as anyone, voiced Mabel Pines in Gravity Falls. There's an excellent cast of comedians in this show.

Powdering your face was something people did years ago. It happened in America, too. A lot of of first presidents powdered their face. It was a sign of wealth. Having pale skin showed you didn't go outside much which means you had employees working under you. And then additionally that powder was expensive so having an upkeep of wearing it showed your wealth.

i need to get a good binder., my autism makes my senses extremely snesible....overly so.....and in a cheap one i can barely breathe and the restriction drives me craazy.....I just want not to have them...is a flat chest too much to ask?.....I cannot afford surgery and with my mental illness history they probs also wouldn´t let me. And that Intro "sounds gay. I´m in" was so adorable.

Apparently, that moment was completely improvised by the actor...and kinda weirded out the other actors in the scene as well.
