Great movie to watch with friends! Nothing like stomping bugs with Michael Ironside’s gravel voice 😀

The new robocop is actually good a lot of people didn't like it I grew up off robocop and I enjoyed the new one.

I always like hearing your comments and thoughts about movies, both of you are very perceptive and often you raise a point that I might have not noticed myself. That is why I sub to your patreon whenever I have the spare time. I would love to see your reaction to Demolition Man, I consider it one of the best action movies from the 90s and like this one there is much more to it.

chojja

Im so glad you liked it, i watch it for the first time in 1997 (i was 14 at the time) and loved it since then. But obviously the way i view and react to it as evolved with the years. Its still so entertaining after multiple viewing, one of my favourite for all the reasons you mentioned.

Robert Robillard

I'm Sure they will Soon., it's on their List. However they have many Requests to get to .. Be Patient as I'm sure they would Respect that.

Well guys I frigging loved every second of watching that with you guys! More than that, I loved the commentary at the end. I thought that was a tremendous discussion and dissection of the film, and you nailed it. Nailed it. You guys got exactly what The Man was trying to do and say. A little context here; Verhoeven was born in 1938, in Holland, and clearly remembers parts of the war from being a small child. He grew up with his family talking about their very recent memories of living in an occupied country. The film is based - if I might use that word - on a Robert Heinlein novel; I read it in high school and hated it. So did The Man. It's bigoted, seriously right-wing, militaristic, it depicts fascism as something to strive for ... it's pro-war to its soul, and of course that clashed mightily with the outlook of a man whose family had brought him up during a war. So when it came to write it he left all that stuff in there ... but as a sort of sick joke, and instead of making a pro-war sci-fi made it an anti-war political and social satire instead. And yes, a lot of people, including a lot of film critics, did not make the deductive leap and took it on face value. And it shouldn't be difficult for anyone to grasp! Federation Network is practically another news station beginning with the initials FN. The dude who signs Rico up and tells him "Mobile Infantry made me the man I am today ..." has no limbs left ... violence as the answer to the world's problems is just plain loopy and you need a military background to enter politics, become a writer ... and license to have babies for god's sake! Indoctrination of the young ... that scene where the kids in the schoolyard and all jostling to hold the AUTOMATIC RIFLE ... lol ... bonkers. So is a justice system which arrests, convicts and executes murderers in ONE DAY ... for God's sake, don't ever put THAT one up for a referendum anywhere in the West ... And the symbology (the imperial Eagle for the federation SCREAMS fascism at you, but not half as much as the uniforms of the higher up's ...) is too obvious to miss! And yet a lot of people did. And still do. Some reviews missed the point to such an extent that they thought it was a PRO fascist film. Idiots. One notorious review said that it was stupid to make a film about fascists if you wanted people to care about your characters ... Christ, that's exactly what The Man DIDN'T want them to do! There is so, so much great trivia about this movie ... the co-ed showers was something The Man insisted on; the cast said they would only all lose their clothes if he directed the scene naked. So of course he did! When he was doing the casting he could literally have had his pick of the best character actors out there, because of his past successes. He chose to go almost exclusively with The Pretty People, casting folks for their looks because he wanted to suggest (obliquely) that the fascistic future had somehow genetically engineered a sort of Master Race; (oh yes, Denise Richards as a pilot with an advanced degree sounds ridiculous and it was meant to be ... two years later she was cast by people who DEFINITELY missed the point as a NUCLEAR SCIENTIST in The World Is Not Enough and its viewers did not buy a second of that ...) The characters themselves are almost wholly unlikeable, and as shallow as a puddle in the street. The Man, in an interview some years back, actually said he wanted the viewer to be constantly asking, "Are these people crazy?" He also said he wanted to paint a fascist society as one where everything was shiny and beautiful but which wasn't really good at anything ... except bug killing! The movie is ALSO a takedown of various other action war films, specifically Top Gun and Independence Day ... Bright Young Things engaging in high tech war and America saving the world from aliens :) Utter genius. The subversive elements are deep, some of them buried so deep you have to know what to look for; take the famous "co-ed shower scene" mentioned earlier; Verhoeven said it's one of the most important scenes in the movie, because it is supposed to show these people are more interested in their careers and advancement than with their libidos which a few kisses aside are virtually absent from the whole film save for Rico and Dizzy just before their final mission. I have loved the film since I first saw it, and time has only made me more fully appreciate it as a work of art and genius as well as one of the most subversive films Hollywood has ever made. It stands up as a great action film, of course, with spectacular sequences ... but dig even a little below the surface and that's where you see that, in fact, it's a masterpiece. I am so glad you guys loved it, and even happier that you just got it and knew what The Man intended for it. Superb guys, and thanks again. Total pleasure sitting and watching this one with you.

Michael G. Munz

Same. It came at the concept from a different angle rather than just trying to remake the original. Taken on its own terms, it's a good flick.

One thing I've always wondered: How did Xander get to be an assistant flight instructor when he graduated at the same time as Carmen?

Beat Conductor

Saw a couple other people recommend Demolition Man. I'm going to do the same. That movie is an absolute blast. Can also be enjoyed as a classic 90's action flick, or as social satire. The combo works well.

Beat Conductor

Something I didn't hear you guys mention in the after talk, but there's a strong possibility the Federation let the asteroid hit Earth so they could go to war.

Insufferable Smartypants

The book is VERY different than the movie, but it's great. Interesting anecdote, the Sky Marshall that resigns after Kledathu knows that he's going to be escorted out of that room to be hanged for his incompetence. Would you like to know more?

SavageDiplomat

That is crazy. I assume that's something in the book but not the film. Thanks for the info.

SavageDiplomat

Superb reaction guys. This is one of my all time favorite films. Just an amazing film that wasn't appreciated or understood when it was released but is now a cult classic.

ONE MORE DAY AND WE'LL BE SCREAMING ENEMY!!!

Funk McPuke

Since you guys didn't comment on the satire as you watched the movie, I honestly was worried that you were missing it and were just watching on a surface level. Having seen enough of your reactions and discussions by this point, though, I should've known better. Of course you were all over it. This is why I subbed early on and why I became a Patreon when that was something I hadn't really done much of before. You two bring SO MUCH more than just "Omg, that movie was crazy. Well, if you enjoyed our reaction, like and subscribe..." I love that your reactions always come with insight into writing, filmmaking, and deep-dive discussions into what the films are about. It allows me to bask in the artistic discussions that, unfortunately, my friends are not interested in having about any media (or, really, anything else). So, y'know, thanks for that. Y'all help feed my brain (not like a brain-bug, ofc; in a good way).

Helion

If you guys feel like watching an old (but gold) Sci-Fi animated movie, I suggest Titan A.E.

Paul Verhoeven had an insane run in the 90s. Sure, somewhere in the middle we get Showgirls (don't watch that) but otherwise he makes a slew of great films. Starship Troopers is in fact based on a book and the tones of the book and the movie differ a bit. Both of them are criticism of the way humanity structures society, but the focus is quite different. In the film the focus is (as you pointed out) way more focused on the propaganda part of the whole thing, which makes perfect sense if you put it into perspective with Verhoevens other films of the time. When it came out most people probably saw it as a cool action movie with crazy aliens, while I think your interpretation is probably closer to Verhoevens perspective on the story. The acting isn't exceptional, but it doesn't really have to be either. Pretty much everybody needs to feel like real people and they pull it off well enough for us to fall into the universe. Certain deaths hit us hard enough to give us emotions. Like you said, the movie is basically a satire of how to make propaganda, and the acting is good enough to slowly push us into believing the propaganda. Visually Starship Troopers is very interesting. It's colourful and bright, yet grim and horrible at the same time. The effects are still quite good. Sure there are short moments were you can tell it isn't quite real, but honestly considering it's the late 90s, I am going to go out on a limb and say that this is better than films made much later (like 10-15 years later). Some cool cinematography as well, I really like the scene where Rico sends his first videoletter to Carmen and it feels like he really had the camera in his hand. I really hope you guys stay on the sci-fi train, there are some excellent films in that genre.

SST was s a cult classic and fine work from Verhoeven as always. My friends dad took a few of us to see it in theaters when it came out and there were like 9 people there. A lot of people didn’t appreciate this movie. You may have missed a few actors or didn’t mention them - the general is in all Verhoeven movies, he played Kuatos host in Total Recall and he was one of the business guys in Robocop. Watkins was father Gabriel in TWD and Zimm the drill instructor is the legendary Clancy Brown. The Rodger Young captain is Sue Ellen Mitchkie in Seinfeld and she’s also a different character in Starship Troopers 2. And of course Jake Busey. Ari mentioned their weapons being ineffective and that remains an acknowledged fact throughout the franchise where Earth continually builds better weapons. And Helldivers 2 definitely took major inspiration from this.

Joey Cintron

Watch the Robocop remake!

Einherj

This is definitely my favorite Verhoeven film. It tricks you like horrible political ideologies trick people in real life.

Earl Grey

This is one of my favourite movies of all time. The masterful commentary on war and its propaganda machine is amazing. Slowly but surely it turns our college friends and sweet hearts into its instruments of death. Justified? Not justified? Just like the good lieutenant said, figuring things out for ourselves is the only freedom nobody can take from us!

TheMediaKnights

We're definitely game to check out the new Robocop, we're so curious what this new iteration brings to the table! We'll definitely add that to our list!

TheMediaKnights

Hi there! Thanks so much for always being so supportive and kind, it really means the world to us! Definitely adding Demolition Man to our list! Thanks for the rec!

TheMediaKnights

Thank you so so much for the kind comment, that made our day! We're so glad to have you with us! We'd also be super game to check out Demolition Man, it sounds like it's right up our alley! Thank you for the rec!

TheMediaKnights

This is definitely a movie that benefits from rewatches - there is so much hidden, so many layers to enjoy! We had a blast with it and loved sharing it with y'all!

TheMediaKnights

Y'all are so kind! We're definitely covering Transformers One, and we do our best to get to all the requests as soon as we can! Y'all are the best, thank you for always being so supportive - it's wonderful to have you with us here!

TheMediaKnights

Thank you so much for this amazing comment - as always it was a joy to read through! So many points to address, but I'll definitely start with the initial point you made about this film being misinterpreted. When you boil it down to the individual, this feels like someone whose sarcasm is at such a peak level, that a statement goes over many people's heads, making them miss the sarcasm itself and assuming they were being serious. This is just that! On the surface level, it's deeply entertaining but after about the 20-30 minute mark, both of us started to feel an odd kind of discomfort. It was tough to shake at first, but then we realized that we were being intentionally kept out of the loop. We never got the full context of the conflict between the bugs and the humans and that was just something we couldn't ignore anymore. That's what made it so clear - it's a scathing review on fascism and people's obliviousness to their circumstances. It's like the frog (or toad?!) in a pool of water, not noticing the heat rising as it's gradual. It's so deeply relevant to what's going on in the world and, sadly, there are many who still view fascism as a solution to our problems. Blind obedience, submission to the government/military seems to still have a pull on people, despite knowing our own history. It's disheartening but alas, that's the world we live in. Another item that I (Denise) found interesting was the shower scene you mentioned - it's actually oddly refreshing to see people be oblivious to nudity. Nudity seems to, still, have an irrational hold on people when it's completely natural. I also found it deeply refreshing that someone who looks like Denise Richards could be a rocket scientist, and also choose to pursue her career. It's honestly become so boring to consistently be subjected to the same stereotype on human beings, regardless of gender, that I was very willing to go along with that. You do make a fantastic point when it comes to choosing the actors - they're clearly supposed to be, as you said, The Pretty People and, even if it's subconscious, it's impossible not to notice how they're objectively almost 'too attractive', especially considering the ones joining the Military. People in the military usually are depicted more rugged (albeit still 'attractive' because, well, Hollywood lol) and the fact that most of the people we see seem ready to walk the runway was deeply amusing. All of that being said, this is that film that absolutely benefits from multiple rewatches, there are still so many things we know we likely missed, and really wanna delve into! Thank you again for your wonderful comment and support, it's always a joy!

TheMediaKnights

Hahaha sorry for worrying you there for a sec! We were honestly just trying to go along with it and not jump to conclusions! Thank you so so much for such a kind comment, honestly this brightened our day! We're so glad to have you with us to share our journey with, it's always the best part of our Youtube gig!

TheMediaKnights

Cannot blame you, this film is such a gem!! And love what you said about us figuring things out for ourselves being the only freedom nobody can take from us. That is absolutely true - with critical thinking and kindness there is nothing that cannot be solved!

TheMediaKnights

This film absolutely deserves the label of cult classic - it's so intelligent, scathing and utterly unapologetic in regards to what it's saying and we absolutely adore it for that!

TheMediaKnights

Thanks so much for this awesome comment! Every director/visionary will have their ups and downs - and some films also just need time to become more relevant. Even with meh movies, there is still a lot to learn, and honestly we got so many comments on Showgirls that now it's piqued our interest! We're absolutely game to stay on the Sci Fi train, we've not been disappointed by that genre thus far, so if you have any recommendations, send them our way!

James Forrest

Denise, excellent comments :) Thanks for that lengthy and brilliant reply! So looking forward to what you guys come up with for us next!

Ed R

If you ever get the chance to read the book, I highly recommend it. its a classic.

Donny C

The book is really good imo, I used to read it once a year. Movie is much different though. But I adore the movie and was blown away watching it in the theater. So happy for you guys!

Donny C

The first scene of the film – an advertisement for the Mobile Infantry – was adapted shot-for-shot from a scene in Triumph of the Will which was a Nazi propaganda movie 1935.
