TheSauceGuy

If you guys have ever played Breath of the Wild, you can really tell they took some inspiration from this film.

Taylor

Wahoooo! I've been waiting for this one!!!

Bela

oh fuck yeah, this has been my favorite movie since i was like 7 years old. what a pleasant surprise

Lenny Wikberg V

Such a goated movie!! I’ve never seen the sub so this was fun, missed out on a good dub tho

N

I was really looking forward to you guys seeing this film. And I'm so happy that you're watching it in the subtitled version... I hope you will continue to watch the whole Ghibli series. I like what Hayao Miyazaki, the director of the Ghibli series, said about the film 'Even in the midst of hatred and carnage, there are things worth living for. Wonderful encounters and beautiful things can exist."

Patriicia

omgggg cant wait to watch this when I get home from work! So excited, this movie is definitely in my top 3 of Ghibli movies.

Matthew Valentine

I reccomend Porco Rosso as the next 90's ghibli follow up to mononoke, its my fav ghibli but this is a super close second

corLeonis

Finally!!

neko

The final Raid Boss in anime has to be Jojos😏

Esther

This is definitely one of my favorite Ghibli movies. Also, I think The Boy and the Heron is now available on Prime Video.

corLeonis

I loooove Schindler's List

Tia

This is definitely my favourite Ghibli movie! I first watched it when I was 8 and obviously in dub. It was an interesting change in sub, the biggest shock was Moro’s voice! It’s actually a woman in the dub, and was one of my favourite performances!

Huewi

Fun fact: Ashitaka's tribe, the Emishi are people that are Indigenous (or descended from) to Japan and were around before Chinese settlement.

krystin-02

weathering with you, next?

TheSauceGuy

Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are my favorite Ghibli movies but I think this is just slightly above Spirited Away for me.

TheSauceGuy

Lady Eboshi would be easier to empathize with if she didn't knowingly sacrifice a ton of her men to kill the boars.

TheSauceGuy

I've only seen five Ghibli movies, the same you guys have seen but with My Neighbor Totoro added in. Maybe I'm insane, but Howl's Moving Castle was my least favorite by a significant amount. I didn't enjoy the plot as much, but the world-building was great. I haven't watched My Neighbor Totoro since I was a kid, so maybe that'd be lower now.

Where is The Boy and the Heron. Don't edge me now.

Yes. Howl's Moving Castle definitely lacks in plot. Although it makes up for it quite well with insane dub voices, music and characters.

Another Ghibli Movie I would recommend is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I considered it a hidden gem these day because it's from the 80s but the quality of the movie still holds up so damn well. It has some similar elements as Princess Mononoke and the world is breathtaking. Highly recommend the geks to watch it even if it's privately or anyone patrons here.

Bbmarie

Wow thanks for the surprise!😊💖

Justin Callang

Also watching all the Ghibli movies is a tall order but very doable. I dedicated time in the summer once to watch all the Ghibli films I hadn’t seen yet. I highly recommend their lesser known, underrated film Only Yesterday as it’s a more grounded/human drama as opposed to the fantastical films they’re more known for.

Alison

Also love how Shia Labeouf voices one of the MC's in the dub.

bondbond53

'PERFECT BLUE' next please!!!! You will absolutely 100% not regret it

ssj4rit

My mom hates anime but this was the first anime she loved.

DAI

Wait...Again...It is definitely way quieter than usual, the anime audio, compared to the geks audio, like the recent couple of posts. Am I the only one noticing this?

DAI

I appreciate that you guys like the 90s vibe of anime style <3

Mei Nano

Another Ghibli movie! It's my favourite movie 🖤

Wanted to recommend James Cameron's Avatar movies again, if you guys haven't watched it already, I think the girl will like it too

bondbond53

Ashitaka's people, the Emishi, were a real Japanese minority that were eradicated in the 7th Century or so. In this story, this one village had survived and persisted in secret for hundreds of years. They did not want to be found. That's why if Ashitaka, or anybody, was to leave, they could not come back and bring the possibilities of outsiders (Japanese) to follow. Lady Eboshi herself is an incredibly interesting character. For the historical/cultural context: this movie is set in the 1200s-1300s in the Muromachi period, characterized by an incredible uptick of violence directed against the peasantry by the samurai, bandits, nobles warring for power etc. The ideal noblewomen's behaviour for the time would be to sit around and look pretty (the time of famous women-warriors like Tomoe Gozen hadn't come yet). Someone like Lady Eboshi would be only educated in literature, calligraphy, possibly art, composing poems, a bit of written Chinese and perhaps music. Instead, she is wearing men's hakama (fancy, but not the style that a woman would wear), she knows how to shoot (and presumably has negotiated a trade route with China to get samples of those powder tubes in order to reverse engineer them), is on a much equal standing with the townspeople than a proper lady of the time ever would be, and literally founded a town from scratch. We're forever left wondering what her story was. On another note, in an interview, Hayao Miyazaki pointed out something simple yet profound "Humans find things in nature that are useful for them and try to protect those things. But nature is brutal and unforgiving and has so many things that are not useful to us humans." Its one of the reasons why the animals/creatures in Mononoke are not cute or have cuddly features to them. They are savage, creepy but also majestic and dignified.

Sasha

I think i saw a post few days ago that it would be dropping out tonight(then) and that they'd get to it asap

tp

Oh wait you just mentioned it lol 😭

James

I think I watched this with family in the 90s? Good times, and this is probably one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies. I recommend watching the 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie at some point as it's visually stunning and with a relevant story to tell. One can make an argument that the Cyberpunk 2077 anime is model after the Ghost in the Shell franchise, and I've read that the game has direct references.

Mysterious Figure

Yakul was the inspiration for the spirit steed Torrent that you ride in Elden ring. I love how a single moment of inspiration helps create entire worlds we get drowned and mixed into. It's like oceans mixing their waters. That feeling you get when playing Elden ring also makes you go back to that moment when you were a child and you saw Yakul in Princess Mononoke for the first time. A single moment of creative inspiration both Hayao Miyazaki and Hidetaka Miyazaki had after almost 30 years bringing back so many memories is a beautiful thing.

Kreis

I saw it in theaters this year. It was a anime special re-release in Germany and it was the first time I saw this movie. It was a great watch✌️ Not my favorite ghibli part, but a good one as always for ghibli movies :D

Lenny Wikberg V

Ghibli movies cook with there dubs, ngl the dub for this is a lot better than the sub

Kreis

Crazy how different opinions are cause Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite Ghibli movies❤️

Lily

I have been waiting for this for so long!! And Sub!?!? It made my day. Thank you, geks! Joe Hisaishi's music is all fire. He has made almost every piece of music for Ghibli since the first Ghibli movie came out in 1985, Nausicaa. FYI Carter, they call Deer God Shishigami, not Shikigami. It definitely sounds similar. Also, the girl in the beginning is Ashitaka's younger sister. She calls him 'big brother' in the old Japanese way. Hope you will watch Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, or Porco Rosso soon!!

Kreis

W comment✌️ I love comments like this that describe some 'hidden' things from the show in a more detail way. Appreciate the effort 🌟

Super Novice

Such a good film, and the score is legendary

Jay

Studio Ghibli always cooks imo

Luger

Princess Mononoke is definitely a banger and one of my favorites. Another Ghibli film I recommend is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. This movie is amazing and has similar themes to Mononoke.

Micah Seer

This film is a masterpiece, second to spirited away only in my opinion. Before I watched the reaction I knew Carter would be cooking in the outro, you can always rely on him with the more nuanced material the boys watch. Glad Cannon and Jack really seemed to grasp it as well. This has probably already been recommended before but you guys have to watch Akira sometime down the line. Now just waiting for that juicy GoT 4x10 drop 👀

KatyRose

Ive been waiting for this reaction and i just got discharged from surgery today so its a nice upload to come home to 😄😄

Rodrigo Figueroa

Ngl Code geass got me starving, but I appreciate these uploads too

Mysterious Figure

I feel like this movie makes you think profoundly about humanity and our place in the world. Carter definitely seemed like he was having such an experience while watching this movie. It is for sure my favorite of the Ghibli films.

Liam

Why are you allergic to watching dubs…especially Ghibli dubs which get famous actors/actresses to voice the characters…

Micah Seer

You can just tell by his reaction near the end and the thoughts after. He pretty consistently has the best analysis. I absolutely love things like Naruto and more the childish content especially due to nostalgia, but as I get older it’s the works like this that really separate themselves

Taylor

You will all have to watch the English Dub on your own time at some point! Studio Ghibli films are the rare exception where the English voice acting is superior to the Japanese Sub.

ShadowCat

I'm so happy y'all finally watched this. It's my favorite Ghibli film, but Spirited Away is a close second. The messages in Ghibli films are so amazing, which is why they hit so hard. I'm so glad y'all really appreciated the visuals and music. I just loved seeing your reactions to this, especially when Ashitaka caught that arrow. So goated🤣

Ren Latos

I definitely recommend watching ghibli movies in dub. While sub is alright the dubs with Ghibli just are so high quality. I will say though if you end up watching A Secret World of Arrietty, be sure to watch the UK dub specifically!

Alison

I hate bringing up dub vs sub, and idk if its because I grew up watching the dub, but it's sooo much better. The sub voices just don't seem to have as much emotion in them. The dub version adds more background voices, lines, and just changes the way you look at certain characters. So while I hate being that person, yall should seriously watch it dubbed. You don't have to record your reactions to it, just watch it in your free time!

botanbutton

I can see the score being lower for this movie simply because Western folks may not understand a lot of things specific to Japanese culture in the movie. Ghibli movies especially tend to be very 'show, don't tell,' so context or significance can be lost to viewers who are not from Japan. On the other end, Howl's Moving Castle will make sense and be a favorite among Western viewers as the story itself is British and doesn't require explaining. It's really interesting to think about.

ShadowCat

Another thing! Lady Eboshi is such a complex character. In addition to saving the girls in slavery, she also gives care and jobs to people suffering from Leprosy. Those were the individuals wrapped up making the guns. In that age, people with leprosy would have been cast aside and left to die, but she gave them a place and care. So it's so hard to hate her fully when she obviously cares for the humans around her.

Mysterious Figure

I think its cool Carter is comfortable with how he feels and it really shows on his face. The moment Mononoke was rejecting Ashitaka and stabbed him with the gift he gave her, while he still embraced her with open arms and didn't even flinch, you could see on Carter's face how that moment made his heart explode into a million shining stars. His eyes often tell so much more than words ever need to. I think he is a lovely human being.

The RZA

You guys would like Suzume i think. Isn't Ghibli but it has some of the same elements and has amazing story, animation and ost.

Asbjørn Kennedy

My first rewatch of princess mononoke, and I think the rewatch may have put it in the top spot for ghibli movies for me personally. The cinematography, the visuals, the score, the plot, the themes - it’s just very comfortably solid on all accounts while also feeling incredibly unique and original, even though it is telling a very simple story, with somewhat simple characters (albeit several of them being morally gray). Wonderful movie! Thanks for giving me an excuse to rewatch it!

Dude Man McGee

Ya'll should check out Akira from 1988, the animation is legendary! Definitely watch sub for that too.

treehunned

yall are goated for this bop

Nikkifynn

Favorite Ghibli movie of mine. Definitely even in my all time favorite movie list. Miyazaki is such an important figure when it come to my childhood. I grew up with the movies. I think I was around eight when I saw princess mononoke the first time. They showed the movies every once in a while in free TV here in Germany. Also Joe Hisaishi (the composer of all Studio Ghibli scores) is just a genius. I saw him in concert live this year. He's currently touring. The concert in Duesseldorf (GER) was really a once in a lifetime experience. I wept, especially during the mononoke piece.

Ty

Question for my fellow gek watchers. This is an all encompassing question… Should you watch movies/anime before you watch them react? Thoughts? Og here started watching since aot days

Ty

Obviously, up to personal opinion. For example I watched the first episode of Kaiju 8 with them. But then just binged the series.

Ty

Akira is definitely worth a watch

Lalisa Truong

Nausicaä is another of my favorites! Has similar themes to Princess Mononoke as well, you guys should watch that one too 😊

kiiturii

that was a very enjoyable movie, I'm glad you guys reacted to it, been meaning to watch it anyway lol

kiiturii

personally, if it's something I haven't seen before, it probably just means I don't care *that* much about it, so i'll just first time watch it with them of course if it's a show I might binge ahead if I get really into it, but watching these ghibli movies with them for the first time has been a lot of fun, been here since aot as well

kiiturii

goddamnit of course every comment is dubvsub again

Elisa Kallai

Omggg yesss another movie, it's been so long! Thank you Studio Gek!!

Sascha

I was so excited to see you guys watch Mononoke! It gets me hyped for you guys to watch my favorite Ghibli film, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. You guys should consider watching some of these in dub. Ghibli movies generally have great dubs. Nausicaä in particular has some names you guys probably know, like Patrick Stewart, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Shia LaBeouf and more. And for Mononoke, I personally feel like Moro's dub actor was a lot more fitting than the Japanese one.

Sascha

Yes! Nausicaa is one of my favorite movies. And I hope they watch the dub. They probably don't know about all the big names in the Ghibli dubs. Nausicaa has not only Shia Labeouf, but also Mark Hamil, Uma Thurman, and Patrick Stewart! I really hope they read the comments enough to consider doing some research on Ghibli dub casts.

Sascha

This was my third Mononoke rewatch and the movie still hits just as hard. It's so crazy how excited I get when you guys upload a movie reaction. Thanks for uploading even though the one you wanted to do didn't pan out.

Sascha

I love hearing your honest opinions during the discussions. I think that the unexplained and sometimes confusing aspects of Ghibli movies have functioned as one of their greatest strengths and also their biggest shortcomings. They give you a look into these whole new worlds that are teeming with life and culture. If they took the time to explain every bit it would take away the allure of the settings. But at the same time you're left with so many questions it can make you feel like they left a lot undone.

Anna

I feel you!! The Ghibli dubs are on another level, the casting is always so so good. I missed Keith David this watch 🤣

WalloWing

Wow, this rewatch really made me appreciate the film more

Ty

Think I might save these movies as they seem special🙂

KatyRose

Nausicaä of the valley of the wind next pls !!!

Kare

I’ve been waiting for this one! Loved ur analysis! everyone kinda interprets the theme of the movie slightly differently depending on which side u veer towards more. But overall this is the best ghibli movie imo

Kare

I swear y’all have to be slightly delusional to think the dub will ever be better than the sub, specially in a studio ghibli movie… while I agree the dubs are good and probably the best dubs out there but they’ll never compare with the original language of the movie! I hope studio gek continues to watch these movies in sub

MaraReaper

I’ll watch with them right away if I’m iffy on whether I think I’ll like the movie/show or not. Otherwise I’ll watch on my own first.

Skillerfish

I think sometimes it's a matter of personal taste, sometimes nostalgia for what we hear first, sometimes both. For myself and others I've spoken to, when a dub is preferred, usually it comes down to certain favourite characters or scenes feeling better to the watcher in one language or another. So I suspect it's probably just a result of people seeing dub first and having a really positive memory from watching, which makes it the preferred dialogue. Example: I saw DBZ in English as a kid, and I can't stand Goku's high pitched Japanese voice even though it's the original, so for that I would always choose dub.

Skillerfish

In general (95% of the time) I would choose sub for things where I have no prior experience with it. Although if it's a movie and it's known for having a really good English dub, I'll often give it a watch in both languages to check out the performances. For most Ghibli films I've seen, I've done this. I'd recommend it to anyone that enjoys appreciating the vocal performances. If people just want a single viewing, I'd say go sub, but I can also understand people choosing dub if they don't enjoy having to read.

Elisa Kallai

I did NOT think this movie would be gorey-

selma

I think you guys would really enjoy Suzume. it's pretty new, has a great story and the art is amazing

seeing ashitaka catch an arrow so effortlessly will never not give me absolute chills! he’s such a ‘casual badass’ doesn’t intend to show off and yet everywhere he goes he always leaves a mark. honestly he’s the definition of a perfect character to me, the type of character that u cant help but love cuz he’s very true to himself, wishes the best outcome for both sides (animals and humans), stands on business, has the most loyal and adorable companion (yakul), rizz unmatched, etc etc! happy to hear Princess Mononoke is one of carter’s fav movie! it truly was so impactful and moving to watch as a kid and even more so now that im grown. cant wait for more studio ghibli movie reactions! :) alsooo i want to recommend the boy and the beast (fun and has action!) and wolf children (absolutely beautiful)

devakira

I'm sooo late 2 months later bcse I unscuscribed as I didn't have enough money but I was waiting for your reactions on mononoke hime and I'm not disappointed thank you! I'm very happy that you liked it ♥️🌸 I recommend you to listen the music "the legend of ashitaka" and "princesse mononoke" (basically the main soundtrack of the movie) also mononoke means "spirits" or "vengeance spirits"
