Justice for carter

DontFailArtSchoolEren

yea they didnt flesh out suzaku somehow being a captain america super soldier that was also a gifted pilot of the latest and greatest lancelot knightmare. They should never have shown mao shooting 3 times on suzaku and dodging all the bullets because they never fleshed out suzaku being some sort of super soldier, could've seen suzaku spin kick the gun away or something. It gets back to being more consistent, the show was still early in how they wanted to present suzaku and made a questionable choice.

Flubbedsquid

Just for your memory's sake, neither us nor Lelouch know the contract. All she said in episode 1 is he has to make her wish come true.

Enma

To answer Jack's questions (don’t worry, no spoilers): What was the contract that CC made with Lelouch? This is the contract mentioned in Episode 1: "I'll grant you power, but in return, I want you to grant one of my wishes." (She has not mentioned what her wish is.) Who was that guy at Mt. Fuji? His name is Taizo Kirihara. Kirihara aids the resistance groups by supplying them Knightmares, weapons and intelligence. He is an elderly man whose wealth was from the mining of sakuradite (Sakuradite is what powers the mechs, and there is a large deposit of it at Mt. Fuji.) Kirihara knew Lelouch and Nunnally when they were younger, at the home of the Kururugi family, Kururugi Shrine. (I might be wrong on this, but I think the shrine was one of the control centers during the war.) The reason he was there in the first place is due to his wealth and influence, which made him a behind-the-scenes administrator of the Japanese government led by Suzaku's father, the prime minister, Genbu Kururugi.

Micah Seer

Regarding the post discussion I have actually been thinking something similar in recent posts. I’ve loved seeing Brig get more critically minded over the course of the channel, always checking IMDb scores and articulating strengths and flaws with what they’re watching and having some phenomenal perspectives, but as someone who’s former favorite show was Naruto, I don’t know how that mindset has made its way into everything but Naruto, because when viewed critically Carters takes are actually very accurate and understandable. He gets a ton of heat in those comment sections and from the guys for pretty much telling it as it is. It seems Naruto is judged differently than everything else

kai

they can’t handle a real one like carter that’s gone CLOCK IT everytime

Artemipsyche

I think the critiques are fair, everyone has their pet peeves. This show BUGGED me so bad, but I can still see why others enjoy it. I think I set my expectations too high due to the hype.

William Glasgow

so aside from suzaku having extremely high scores on reflexes which was mentioned when he took over the lancelot, that scene is actually a bit weird. I've always thought it may be a bit of an homage to the original manga the show is based off. in that there weren't really mechs more like super powered suits.

MADHOUSE

First and foremost, I think episode 16 was definitely the weakest of S1 (along with the cat episode). If the director didn't bring Mao back to life after the amusement park scene, I think it would of been a good little 2-ep arc. Also, yeah, Suzaku's superhuman abilities always bugged me. On my first watch, I had to shift my thinking where Lelouch can do the impossible with his Geass power + strategic capability, while Suzaku can do the impossible, physically. Just gotta roll with it ig lol. That wall-running machinegun kick was funny af tho 😂 Lelouch using the Geass on himself was a goated move. Regarding your guys' "critiques" on different shows: If Brig has a show he likes, Naruto in this case, he will remember the good parts, and not so much the bad. This is normal. That's why when he rewatches with the boys, he always mentions that he forgot about certain convenient plot points (e.g. the overuse of substitution jutsu). Cannon is just taking everything in as a new anime-viewer and has some questions about iffy moments. Again, very normal. If I understood Carter in the discussion, he basically just takes weighs the good moments and bad moments of a show, then sees how much he enjoyed it. Basically, very open-minded. Why am I explaining this? IDK TLDR: Ep 16 is mid. Suzaku is a T-1000. Lelouch is a GOAT. The boys have opinions. Have a nice day!

Enma

I think it's simply a matter of bias. Naruto is Brig's favorite anime. We all have that certain thing where we see its flaws but don’t really give them too much thought or attention due to how invested and connected we are with it. I'm the same with One Piece.

Enma

Suzaku outrunning a machine gun and spin kicking it isn't as unrealistic or crazy compared to what Lebron did in 2018

ash

everyone coming for carter at the end had me in tears😭😭 mans always has some W take though. the criticism is true, suzaku being lowkey superhuman is kind of insane. somehow it’s easy to ignore because everything else is so well fleshed out lol

Nico

I hate Suzaku so I accept every Suzaku slander LMAO. Jokes aside, yes, justice for Carter. Suzaku being superhuman didnt ruin it for me mostly because that is indeed something "unusual" but Suzaku being the only one whos able to pilot Lancelot is already way more bs to me early on, so him having inhuman abilities cant make me feel weirder anymore. Overall, this does not affect the series storyline much, I dont remember if Suzaku will show his crazy power again in future episodes, but honestly it really doesnt matter that much imo. But also at the same time, I feel like yall are extra critic when it comes to Code Geass alone. You guys dont seem to like it. As I see it, only Carter enjoys the show and this kinda makes me sad icl. Ofc I might be wrong but I just dont see the enthusiasm in your faces when you watch it.

Nico

Nostalgia bias is a drug. I agree Code Geass can have its flaws and "conveniences" in writing, but if so, Naruto shouldnt be excluded.

Hechy

i feel like carter is the only one being reasonable about this show. the rest just really does treat it different than other shows, naruto being the best example. i cant comprehend claiming naruto is a better or more enjoyable show when the writing is so mediocre. i dont know if its the unique artstyle (partly because its an old show nowadays) or what but there has been bias since ep1 also, some ugly details are more likely to occur in an anime original since it doesnt have the source manga/LN to go off of

Hechy

this show is an anime original. i think you might be mixing it up with some other show

Hechy

or avoid ticktock at all times as you should

Jason

The way I see Suzaku and Lelouch is, Suzaku put all his attribute points into physicality and Lelouch put all his points into intelligence, this is what the show is trying to showcase. Suzaku is a super soldier with no brain and Lelouch is a noodle arms mastermind. I don't have any problem with Suzaku's physicality, I mean.. dodging bullets in anime.. that's like basic stuff. I guess if there is any power systems like Chakra, curse energy or Reiryoku then people wouldn't have problem with that. Power systems can make people accept any illogical things happen in shows?

William Glasgow

I saw this and was like have I been living in another timeline or something?! but I was apparently thinking of the second manga that came out in 07 the year after the show aired. I guess I just thought the one was before the other.

brog.

he geassed himself good lord that boy cold thats my goat

brog.

in the brainwashing and mindreading show the superhuman speed is where we draw the line on our suspension of disbelief here :skull: i get that you're kinda joking but this is extremely minor in the grand scheme of things

brog.

and also as someone whose favorite all time show is naruto and second favorite is code geass... i think you are valid here carter

Joshua Lederman

Loving the upload but damn your code geass reactions end up so negative 😂 Felt like carter was giving a press conference defending his actions ahah

TheOnlyAvid _

That's how I like to view it. Everything we're watching is fiction with geass and everything so it wouldn't be a crazy stretch if someone can dodge bullets and run on walls yk.

Mysterious Figure

I even praised you the last time when you got the second mic and this is the thanks I get. Putting THE LITERAL JACK mic next to the Carter mic will never not be ridiculously funny. How does this even happen I will never understand. And YES, I AM CALLING IT THE JACKSON MICROPHONE! Because that's what it's for. 😭😭😭 💀💀💀 🤣🤣🤣 👌👌👌

Mysterious Figure

This show too often uses convenient plot points to resolve or to complicate things. Like how those police officers didnt kill Mao because they were being "told to shoot and not to kill him" was beyond stupid, or way back several episodes before with that cat wearing Lulu's helmet on its head but then it conveniently fell off at the right moment. Those kind of convenient plot points to explain or complicate things often make for lazy writing and that's a big part of the reason why I dont think this show will ever be on the level of the best shows ever made. It's not a bad show, I liked it as a kid, but now rewatching it, I just think its often sloppy and boring. So many things in this show happen at EXACTLY the right time due to lucky coincidence or cheap surprise gotcha tricks mostly for the audience shock factor which also makes the main character often look less competent too. When the writing expects the viewer to constantly suspend their disbelief, you wonder at one point where is the line between well written ACTUAL fiction and fanfiction. Why is no one wondering how did Mao have time, the means or the knowledge to go under their school to install a machine gun and a pendulum bomb, a custom made chess board with a trigger scale connected to the bomb several floors under... and then Suzaku is apparently Neo from the Matrix running on walls, jumping in the air in sync with the pendulum swing cutting the wire... like how many levels of suspension of disbelief am I buried under here? Complicated isnt always better. Sometimes its just stupid.

BigManSirob

The reason no-one wonders why Mao has all of this machinery is because, using some critical thinking skills, you can surmise that the arms dealer he threatened to expose probably gave it to him and helped install it. Next time, please think a bit more before typing 🙃

Brig Andrus

Guys don’t let the fact that suzaku being Superman distract you from the fact that the show is super good! Im actually really enjoying code geass

Brig Andrus

Like we discussed. That’s not Naruto’s strengths 😂. Never once said it’s my favorite show because the writing is perfect. I’ve actually mentioned so many times that I do agree the writing has flaws

Brig Andrus

I think comparing Naruto and Code Geass is like comparing apples and oranges ngl.

Sanji

Yo idk if the mic set up is a new thing but to me it sounds worse/echoed with two of them. I personally prefer the one mic 👍

DontFailArtSchoolEren

watching it in dub with subtitles like FMAB might've been a better experience as a group reaction, some reactors will pause and reread subtitles or rewatch it again on their personal time if they dont want to have any confusion.

DontFailArtSchoolEren

They needed a 3rd season to really flesh some of the things that would make people react this way, dodging 3 bullet shots? running wall kick and breaking a machine gun? slicing wire in midair? mao setting up the bomb devices while being injured and alone? If they had more time they might have just scraped these questionable scenes but honestly it gets better from here and goated in only 2 seasons.

DontFailArtSchoolEren

they honestly just needed a 10 second scene of suzaku getting some captain america injections so he can handle the lancelot and become a supersoldier.

DontFailArtSchoolEren

Like with most people who finished code geass, im sure everyone will have positive memories thinking about the ending.

DontFailArtSchoolEren

This anime in 2006 was really Anime, cliche scenes, fan before it became cliche, fanservice, the last 30% of Code Geass is how it washes away many of its reasonable issues in the series and why so many people still love it. They certainly could have replaced episode 16 with more world building and information instead of mao being back.

DontFailArtSchoolEren

I think people put more criticisms on a show that is a shorter series like this because how can you tell your story and make it good in 2 seasons? vs Naruto where the world keeps getting bigger and more characters and arcs, its a shounen with a manga artist that is not finished telling his story yet.

Brig Andrus

Yeah. Also considering the fact that this show relies strictly on writing like death note. Idk I was just surprised at it is all! Doesn’t make me think less of the show

Micah Seer

Yeah that’s why I’m confused. Naruto used to be my favorite show so I am well aware of its many flaws as it seems you are. So I’m puzzled why you have an issue with what Carter says about it, because if you are aware of its problems we should both completely agree with him because it’s true. That’s why I pointed out your ability to be critical of other shows as another reason why it’s confusing, because you clearly have the ability to be a good critic, which is what Carter is doing with Naruto. You are totally free to only dismiss Naruto’s writing if you want, but I don’t know why Carter would have to as well, and if he doesn’t, his critiques are totally valid.

Sanji

Based on the post-discussion, Carter WOULD LOVE ONE PIECE

Nico

@Nihilistic Blue I have never seen Studio Gek pause episodes in any of their reaction videos, so Im not sure about that tbh.

Nonos

Yeah I was just thinking even tho one piece presents its world so goofy, he could appreciate some of the writing 😂

Richie Sour

I agree but it’s funny because those are two of some of my favorite anime

Richie Sour

Honestly Naruto and Code Geass are totally different shows, you should be comparing this to Death Note more so then Naruto

Beeg

iirc it's more that they found Suzaku to be MORE qualified and suited than anyone else they could find, not that he's the ONLY one. But yea, this ep basically straight up tells us he's a superhuman. I didn't like Suzaku on first watch but he's grown on me a lot. I don't relate to his values or way of thinking at all because I think his methods simply don't work, but it makes a lot of sense for him as a character given his backstory.

Nico

@Beeg Oh. I havent rewatched this series in a while, maybe him being more qualified is the case. In my case, I understand why he thinks that way, but his way of thinking is still illogical to me. He says he doesnt want more people to die but hes using violence, essentially killing his own people to attain peace, climb up the ranks and "change" from within. A prince/princess might not even be able to do that, what makes him think he, an "honorary eleven" can? One can argue that, he wouldnt know unless he tries, but that still doesnt erase the fact that he still dirtied his own hands. I just simply cant not dislike him.

Cannon Andrus

You can compare any show to any show. Brig mentioned how both have their strengths and both have their weaknesses and that’s what I agree with the most

Ale

I'm confused on why Suzaku's physical abilities threw you guys off lol The way I see it is, Suzaku has being trained since his father's death by Britannia to be a soldier (a honorary Britannian which I bet his training was even harsher than any other soldier just for the fact that he is Japanese), he is the only one that can pilot the Lancelot, you have to have good physical abilities and strength to pilot a Nightmare. You can see in Kallen 's case, she was giving the Guren because of her abilities. Don't really see it as disappointing, but that's me lol. I'm with Carter here, I feel that you guys are being too critical with this show but I guess it's because of the plot itself being more serious, either way I'm not saying that's good or bad I guess it's the way you guys decide to digest the show, I do enjoy your discussions at the end tho!

Kite

33:51 OMG 💀

Kite

the remembering only the good parts is so real, I really used to think that Zabuza arc was goated lmao nostalgia is strong af

MADHOUSE

Yup. I haven’t seen that arc since the dub on toonami (when I was like 12), and let’s just say that it was not as I remembered lol. Same thing with Code Geass, but to a smaller extent. My overall enjoyment was so high that years later, I must have forgot some of the questionable moments. Just the brain doing its thing

Beeg

He basically is a superhuman yea. But to me that's no more ridiculous than lelouch "coming up with 14 identities" for Mao the instant he talked to him, or "thinking of 7 moves at once" during their chess game. Is it over the top ridiculous? Yea. But I just see it as part of the show

Zannen Da

@Cannon Really? Then by your logic, The Walking Dead sucks when comparing it to Sesame Street. Sesame Street has better plot, writing, and characters than TWD.

Starkfern

If suzakus physical abilities disappoint you, why weren't you guys disappointed in vinland saga which is based on real history where thorfinn can jump 30 feet in the air and move in the same way as suzaku or thorkell killing 5 guys in one axe swing. Code geass also has really strong/fast humans like many other animes I didn't think it was so serious

Ayaulym🇰🇿

Dude I don't remember Code Geass being this weird. Maybe it's not as peak as I thought it was back 8 years ago lol. Still love it though

Ayaulym🇰🇿

Yeah I feel exactly like that. I guess as one of the first anime I watched when i was a kid it was great but now it feels even worse than Haikyuu to me, which is literally sports anime. Still the ending of Code Geass is one of the best

Ayaulym🇰🇿

Naruto has chakra excuse, what does Code Geass have? Just because show has magic/superpowers doesn't mean it shouldn't be cohesive as a world. That's a stupid excuse (saying it as a fan of this anime)

Ayaulym🇰🇿

You guys should watch SUCCESSION , it doesn't have those convenient unrealistic moments. I guess its just really grounded in reality while also being UNHINGED

William Glasgow

nah fam I triple checked. it has 5 manga adaptations. and a few light novels. all of which rolled out after the initial airing of the first season

brog.

"it's a stupid excuse" ok that's your opinion. my opinion is that pretending that a soldier performing an unrealistic athletic feat in a show with mech fighting and magic powers, is harming a "cohesive world" and somehow needs an excuse, is a nitpick. it affects legitimately nothing

Hechy

it gets better and better. and in the end it has the best ending ive seen in fiction to date.

Charlie

I liked the heated discussion at the end. And I am on Carter's side he should be allowed to speak his mind without any flack

Natsu1401

True, can’t remember all these bs. Probably because they are insignificant to the main story. I’ll consider these episodes as fillers😅

James Moss

Keep in mind that Code Geass is one of those shows that's more of a masterpiece as a finished show rather than it getting every single little detail correct. It can be goofy and ridiculous at times, but it always lands on it's feet and the overall production of the show is amazing.

Ayaulym🇰🇿

Yeah, the ending is truly incredible. Honestly one of the main reasons I want people to watch CG is to EXPERIENCE the ending. Truly something that I have NEVER seen done in fiction before OR after. Better than the ending of Death Note by a mile

1999

Bro just casually wall ran like the Prince of Persia

G

Why are both mics on one side 😅

Zess

@natsu for some reason a lot of people feel this way about this lil arc when they watch it, myself included. But damn is it not filler, and actually entirely relevant the further we get lol but it did go on 1 episode too long for the arc.

Ed Joultz

Shots fired! im with Carter

Renaldo Allard

Carter and jack are the only ones who is kinda keeping up wit the story just watch it in dub so everyone can understand and enjoy the story the voice actors are amazing and you guys are missing a lot of important information because you can’t keep up wit the sub dialogue and they explain it much better in dub and you get to remember a lot of information the writing of this show is amazing it would be disappointing if you guys truly don’t understand it in the end

Renaldo Allard

Everyone would enjoy the show so much more if they truly understood it the word play the plot the way the mind games and strategies watch it in English bro or rewatch it

Renaldo Allard

Suzaku has physical strength leluch has strategic strength but lacks the physical which is why they make up for each other’s weaknesses so them teaming up is normal because since kids they’ve been around war so they understand each other very well

MissJodles

I’ll be honest I watched it for the first time maybe a year or two ago for an anime-watching challenge, and had heard people saying it was peak and better than things like Death Note etc. so my expectations were a bit high; and honestly I was a little disappointed. It just really didn’t live up to the hype for me. Some good themes and moments, but I feel like it’s tone and mood could never quite decide whether it wanted to be a high school romance drama or a serious war commentary. And all the things people seemed to be amazed by were never that surprising to me. Idk, I guess not all things are for everyone (and I’m a big anime fan with a background in Asian studies, so it’s not like a lot of the references went over my head or anything.) I still don’t think it’s bad at all by any means either, it’s still a good show! But defo not a fave like I was hoping it would be

Hechy

the bigger problem is most of the couch not really vibing with it and the large breaks between episodes. these breaks between episodes arent as detrimental in shows like haikyuu or kaiju but in code geass you have to keep watching to get most stuff

GreetswithJudgement

It’s still one of my favorites but yes on third rewatch I can’t see what I was obsessively appealed to all this time lol 😂 but it’s still nostalgic for me so I’ll give it a pass and like most people said, the ending is a perfect one.

Zess

Wasnt naruto brought up though by brigs question? Can't really claim to not compare apples to oranges when you bring up the orange first lol

Senbu Johns

Using that thinking, Light would have been caught way before L died in Death Note. Don't act like convenience resolves only appear here

DontFailArtSchoolEren

these anime episodes were released weekly when they were on television and viewers still enjoyed it, they are watching 2 episodes per week which is already better.

Ron Jackson Jr

sub i easy fall asleep ngl and dub ill follow it through even if he's shit and it keeps me awake

JeanJean

If the authors wanted to they could have easily written out the superhuman suzaku bit. But they didn't because: 1. they wanted to let us know suzaku's athletic abilities were the equivalent of lelouch's intellectual abilities. He is as extroardinary physically as lelouch is intellectually and can gain a similar type of edge from it. This is something we reguarly see on the battlefield too, as he continually turns the situation around against Lelouch. 2. it's an accepted trope in anime and manga that characters can do crazy shit and unreal movements. Take the example of sport manga for example, it's not supposed to be about superhuman strength but the characters are still able to do the craziest things. It's a similar trope to the one where manga characters can escape death from normally mortal wounds more easily. CG isn't supposed to be a tryhard logic show. Shit's convenient, like how Lelouch can set up his plans so easily and never fail, but that's just the nature of this and you accept it because Code Geass never uses conveniencies as the actual payoff, but as ways to serve and bring about the payoff. Lelouch setting up so much stuf in a short notice for his plans to work is a detail, because the main payoff in these 2 episodes were: 1. Lelouch is accurately able to predict Mao's thought process, this is ironic because thoughts is all Mao has. He can read minds as a power and therefore accurately predict, but Lelouch without that ability was able to read him easily to fool him into thinking this was a real time broadcast. Therefore Lelouch didn't need a geass to read him, it's a part of his intellectual abilities already, and we can speculate that the predictability of Mao arises from him relying too much on his geass and being consumed by it. Lelouch's wits beat Mao's geass. 2. Lelouch used the geass on him, an out of the box solution we could have come up with but did not. It's clever, logical, unexpected and completely turns the situation on it's head. Reason why these 2 episodes were fun and brilliant. About Naruto, I feel carter is both right and wrong. The convenient aspects of Naruto do not spoil the fun when it appeals to our emotions through backstories or power scaling, which is a huge chunk of the show, but it does ruin many fights when the payoff attempts to appeal to our intellect. And that's when you get something like the "harry potter syndrome" where the author brings up many complex powerful plot devices (time travel in Harry Potter, substitution jutsu in Naruto) and fails to take these into account all the time or explaining the limits well enough for us to understand why or when these are supposed to be viewed as satisfying payoffs or not used at all. Naruto does this a lot with the more tactical fights. Genjutsu, subsitution, and so on. This is a huge flaw, probably the consequence of the author trying to keep up with the pace while continually trying to hook the reader by surprising him.

JeanJean

lelouch top 2 gets it. This is a common trope in anime. In HxH and Dragon Ball the characters start off superhuman, and in HxH they don't even use nen initially. In One Piece the characters are superhuman and yet there is no real valid in-universe explanation to how their bodies are able to achieve this kind of performance, but you accept it because that's how the rules of their world function, and that rule you accept too because it's a part of the language of anime and manga by now and has been established so many times already. You don't need to explain every single thing, you accept that the authors could explain it if they wanted but simply did not because they expect the audience to just vibe with it at this point. It's the distinction between the diegetic logic and narrative logic. Code Geass is always convenient despite the mindgames, it's a narrative rule they establish early on. And it's ok because the actual satisfaction comes from the payoff and the payoff relies on Lelouch's satisfying mind games which feel fully logical. The convenient aspects are there to speed up the show, they are means to an end and not a part of the actual payoff. In this episode the payoff is that Lelouch used his abilities on himself and all the other happenings just revolve around that simple fact, a fact you could have predicted but did not because Lelouch is le supergenius. And it works, it's a good twist.

JeanJean

"it gets better" Bruh please shut up with this line, CG is peak all the way for you or it's not. The slice of life combination with the war theme is a common narrative choice in both manga, anime and most importantly visual novels. The fighting is the context, it adds to the sense of grandiose and epic. The slice of life romance adds to the intimate aspect and deepening of the character's relations. Both aspects work within the context of each other and magnify each other. Slice of Life often works as a comfort zone for the viewer, a moment to breath from the action, as if you were watching a sitcom. Evangelion works similarly for example, lots of visual novels like Fate or Muv Luv too. I'm not sure if Code Geass was intended to be a VN initially but sometimes it feels that way since I feel a big chunk of the main cast could have worked really well as romantic options and routes. They all fit the common archetypes. Probably just inspiration though.

Freedom

I love both Naruto and Code Geass. Both has their own flaws. As long as you’re enjoying the shows then I’m good. The arguments just take the fun out of it a little bit, but I can kinda get where both sides are coming from. It doesnt really make me love thows less. Let’s just respect each other’s opinions and enjoy the show!

emmi

I don't get the weird hate for suzaku having unrealistic physical attributes. When watching JJK Itadori was breaking world records casually at the start. No complaints. In Vinland which is way more grounded than code geass characters were jumping 30 feet between boats. Suzaku just had higher level of physical capabilities. That's literally it. It's not bullshit. It's actually super important to the plot and is the reason Lloyd is so insistent on suzaku being the pilot of the one mech. His readings were high above everyone else's. I definitely feel like it being sub and the long breaks have caused a lot of confusion for a couple people.

KrispyKenny

i disagree, keep in mind that "unrealistic" in this context is with reference to the particular universe you are talking about. In JJK the bar for the universe is set on episode 1, with this random kid setting world records and Cursed Objects and whatnot. When for Code Geass, the Universe has not yet had another individual with superhuman physical abilities for 16 episodes. Things seem like an asspull the further along a story you decide to introduce an ability with little to no foreshadowing. Yes, Suzaku had higher than average readings, but to be able to dodge machine guns and kick through metal? I don't think that's reasonable to expect at this point. I agree with Carter here 100%
