Got my Geiger counter and hazmat suit equipped for this one

Derek

Yes!!

Ethan

This show is prob the most underrated/unknown goat show I have come across, glad you guys gave it a shot!

kyle

lets go just got my chinese food im locked in

thank u next

Yall always have the best timing because why am I about to eat my spaghetti 🔥👏

Bambina

I suspect it’s the same in other Eastern European countries, but in mine at least, every time there’s like a technical issue at our Nuclear plant, or a scheduled maintenance, without exception, you will find people asking “could it be a second Chernobyl?” I wasn’t born when it happened, but the older generation is forever traumatised.

Yerr

Yall should watch entourage on HBO, based on mark wahlbergs life loosely. He produces it too. 8 seasons, live action. Up there with other classic HBO shows in my opinion. Loving this watch. Just throwing a suggestion for next vote! Any other entourage watchers that can vouch?

Fatipapi

Cant wait to watch tomorrow 🔥

morena

So I've been busy through work this summer, barely catching up some few things to react here in studio gek then there's an on going drama with the GOT fans in the comments (idk whats that about, guessing not good!) Anyway!!! Since Chernobyl is being reacted to right now (has been voted in the poll long time ago) whats next boys, ehemm* Alice in Borderland?

TheSauceGuy

It's crazy how much this show delivers within just 5 episodes

Brady

Voilturez

When my mom was a kid her sister (my aunt) and her mother (my maternal grandmother) were out walking in the rain while my grandfather (maternal) and my mother were watching the news. Suddently they interrupted the news cast to inform the people of Sweden that the rainfall was potentially carrying fall out and to get inside immediately. Apparently my grandfather had paniced and ran out to find them as quick as possible while he told my mom to go to the boiler room in the basement until he came back. As you may recall, the radiation outside of the USSR was first detected in Sweden, as it was mentioned in the show, and at the time my grandfather (maternal) was working as a nuclear securtiy engineer in Sweden, so he really understood the scope and seriousness of the situation. Fortunately, Chernobyl was solved before it proved to be world ending, when it many ways already changed the world. It was a real event for million, billions of people and we are still seeing the effects of anti-nuclear sentiment today because of fear of it re-occuring. I am excited for you guys to finish this show as it really is a masterpiece.

Count Dooku

leader of the coal miners stood on business, what a goat

Lalisa Truong

I believe it was said that those 3 divers in reality didn't have flashlights/didn't work(?), and they had to navigate around in the dark. They did so by following the pipes. Pretty scary imo, especially with the dosimeters going crazy like that.

DerekSniper30

That episode was heavy.

kivu_king

goated show

Niffol

Don't worry any jabs at you guys are just rough and tumble play. I would assume at least.

Bambina

Also, because you asked towards the end “what if sth like this happens today”. I’m definitely not that knowledgeable in that topic, but there was a relatively recent event in Japan, no? The Fukushima disaster? I believe it was rated the second worse NPP disaster since Chernobyl. It was of course not anywhere near its severity but it was interesting to see how it was dealt with in more modern times.

Ashleep

Ooh the actor who plays Valery Legasov is not in Harry Potter, BUT he is the SON of the actor who played the original Dumbledore. Legasov is Jared Harris and Dumbledore was Richard Harris. Jared Harris is a great great actor, also love him in Mad Men and The Expanse.

Mitch

Entourage is one the most enjoyable watches ever for me. But idk it’s moreso I show I throw on when I’m drunk or high not really something I’d search reactions for tbh.

Ashleep

Yes, and at Fukushima, many Japanese older and retired nuclear workers volunteered to do a lot of the riskiest work to try to limit the harm. https://www.npr.org/2011/09/12/140402430/japanese-seniors-send-us-to-damaged-nuclear-plant

Henrik Åström

One of the most brutal episodes, until the next.

Tiga

We got a hint that she was pregnant in the very first episode (before explosion happened outside her window). Her first appearance is her throwing up in the bathroom :(

Goat

Idk how you guys can eat watching chernobyl

I know y'all have a release schedule but I would not complain if ep 4 and 5 were uploaded right this second 😂

Vasily's wife (the one in hospital 6) probably wouldnt know what radiation is... The environment in USSR would not have distributed information freely, I think a lot of people would just think that they were burned and would not understand that radiation poisoning happens at the atomic level

Mira

I haven't finished this episode yet, but i just wanted to chime in bc I think a lot of the med aspect of radiation gets a bit skewed in this show (I believe that it was probably the dominating thought at the time but it's not what we now know to be true). The patients with radiation poisoning may be somewhat radioactive but not to the extent the show leads us to believe. What is causing their symptoms is the fact that the radiation killed off ALL of their hematopoietic cells (ie: their bone marrow) so they cannot make any immune cells, any red blood cells, or any platelets. So, being in the room without protection is more dangerous to the patient and not the visitor.

jrnoodles

Thank you geks. :)

JulioLG

Glad I'm rewatching this masterpiece with you guys. Hard to go through and leaving you with a lot to think about . What a great show.

Matt Daniells

They actually toned down some of the effects of acute radiation poisoning for this episode. There's a report from the nurses that when Akimov (the one with no face left when Khomyuk visits) tried to stand up from his hospital bed the skin from his ankles and feet "fell off the bone like socks". You're right that they should have just put them out of their misery

bateman bookworm

brig you’re right we would have missed miguel but on the bright side aaron wouldn’t have been there either💀 also cannon bribing works pretty much 95% of the time over there. When I was younger my dad would bribe his way out of speeding tickets in albania

Frosty

3 more weeks 🙏

AnonX

I knew that you guys would enjoy this show and I'm glad that you are. It's definitely not an easy watch but it's so good. On a side note, do you guys like Formula 1? I've seen you guys with tees before so I was wondering if you're into it.

Brittany (Ultraanimegirl4)

I know its makeup and effects in this case but the image of Vasily lying in that bed dying haunts me to this day ever since the first time I watched Chernobyl.. Just knowing that this happened to people

AnonX

Whenever I rewatch this show, I have to cover my eyes multiple times in this episode. I just can't look at that again.

Bellamy Blake

Same. I have to mentally prepare myself for gritty realistic shows like this. The story is worth it tho.

Lemur

For some more insight, Gorbachave wasn't technically the leader of the Soviet Union till 1990, he was the leader of the communist party. But because the party had a complete monopoly on power within the Soviet Union the leader of the party was essentially the leader of the Soviet Union. Not that it really changes anything but I just thought it was an interesting thing to point out.

Lemur

Also the minister of coal wasn't some meek politician, he actually worked in mines since he was 15 before he became minister. He was also the last minister of coal and held the position till the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Gaboxxy

Vasili's wife also talks about how her husband would literally throw up pieces of his liver, and how she would have to clean pieces of his scalp that would get stuck on the pillows.

Gaboxxy

I can only imagine how it must feel to live in those regions, getting cancer and having to wonder if it was by pure chance, or because of the incident.

Brittany (Ultraanimegirl4)

I feel similar to you guys, this is an absolutely amazing show, but SO heavy and SUCH a hard watch. I almost wasn't going to rewatch it with you guys, cause it nearly makes me sick and panicked on occasion, but I thought it is important to see this, and I did want to see your reactions to a show like this one.

JC

What was that random brazilian speaking at 01:15? Some future reaction? Just curious 😂

Gaboxxy

One of the few (if not only) major inaccuracies of this show is this idea that radiation victims basically become "contagious" and spread more radiation to other people. If you were to be hit with even a huge amount of radiation, as long as you ditch your clothes and literally take a shower, you wouldn't be spreading any significant amount of radiation to others around you.

Deirdre

There was also Three Mile Island in the US, there's a Netflix doc mini-series about it.

emma.bean

the caption has me scared 🫢 but here goes…

TheSauceGuy

The thing with radiation exposure is that some people die from smaller amounts while others manage to survive incredibly high dosages, so it's not always this objective thing.

Agent September 🏴‍☠️

Petty bribery is still super common in former-soviet countries especially in the healthcare system. Because the system worked so badly everybody got into the habit of paying to get ahead and sadly that mindset has stuck around.

TheSauceGuy

This show has so many actors that I recognize.

Griffin

This is not entirely true. There is a phenomenon that with extreme radiation exposure leads to enough in the body where it becomes present in bodily fluids enough to harm others by touch. While being near them wouldn't be an issue, even the sweat on their hand could. The CDC had published on this

Griffin

I've heard it described as "chemical flaying" and can't get that image out of my head.

Dude Man McGee

It's important to note that most people in this time period and place have no idea what radiation is.

TheSauceGuy

Brig with that quick Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion.

A_Daddy Daichi

Finally back home from work 😪 this episode was so brutal

Griffin

So much of anti-nuclear sentiment today comes from the Chernobyl disaster. People still don't want to live near nuclear power plants.

TheSauceGuy

Sarcophagus mention

Safety Tina

Fun fact: in my field of work there is a cardiac procedure designated for people who historically had a stent placed post heart-attack (basically placing scaffolding into a closing/closed artery) that has abnormally aggressive endothelialization (the body growing a type of tissue over a nonbiological object) that repeatedly keeps sealing off the heart vessel. The intervention of last resort involves placing actual radiological isotopes into the stented area in order for it to disrupt the body’s aggressive cellular growth. It requires a nuclear physicist and everything! It’s not a common procedure, however

TheSauceGuy

If done properly, it's still far better long-term than other nonrenewable resources.

TheSauceGuy

In the US, they just make you pay absurd amounts from the start 💀

Safety Tina

Interesting stuff! Usually the body “absorbs” the radioactive particles over time, with denser tissues (bones, for example) taking up the most. Prior to the Chernobyl disaster, there were cases of young girls consuming radioactive particles that would go on to die terrible deaths; one case being a girl whose spine was so eaten away that her tiny amount of body weight caused it to crush in and collapse on itself.

TheSauceGuy

This world is too cruel; nobody should have to go through what Akimov and Toptunov went through.

Frank Francis

Concerning building a nuclear plant underground: the problem is that you still need to let the steam out. If you didn't know, the nuclear reaction is used to boil water that turns a turbine which creates electricity. I think underground if would be difficult to let enough steam out for the powerplant to work and not let the chimney completely exposed at the same time

Elle B.

The close-up shots of all the photos/personal items the family members were holding at the burial makes me tear up!

The mountain dew black shirt goes crazy

emma.bean

ok not nearly as bad as i thought it would be based on the caption... but i enjoy watching really heavy & dark shows so i feel like i have a bit of tolerance. that said, this show is definitely heavy and the fact that it depicts an actual historical event makes it all the more affecting. this show makes me feel emotional from start of episode to finish.. not even just the overtly brutal moments. its the overall tone. soooo well done & im so glad im finally watching thanks to u guys.

safaricat

Honestly before she even got to the hospital in Moscow she was screwed anyway. They were in that town, she was out when the dust was falling from the fire. She went to the hospital in Chernobyl to see him and was surrounded by people burning and directly exposed. Also even if they told her it was radiation the general public at the time didn't know just how bad it was even by being near people.

Scinaps

I just have to add that I love the actress playing the fireman's wife (jesse buckley). She has a lot of amazing indie and top roles but I fell in love with her as Marya in BBCs take on War and Peace she was sooooo good.

Enma

Did you know if you ate 3.5 million bananas, you would get the same dosage of radiation that residents of Chernobyl got. And if you ate 100 million bananas, you would die within two weeks. This is because bananas contain naturally occurring radioactive isotopes, particularly potassium-40, one of several naturally occurring isotopes of potassium. Other foods rich in potassium are potatoes, kidney beans, sunflower seeds, and nuts, particularly the brazil nut that additionally has radium. Don’t worry, this concept is a bit flawed. The potassium from bananas and other foods doesn’t accumulate in the body due to homeostasis, which maintains a constant level. Excess potassium is quickly eliminated, and you’d die from eating an excessive number of bananas long before radiation effects become a concern.

Scinaps

Ps. In an ideal world the boys would react to War and Peace (2016) based on an absolute classic by Tolstoy. One of the longest books ever written and that captures the Russian empire during Napoleon's conquest. Epic. Short TV show with only 6 episodes too. 1min trailer is worth a look: https://youtu.be/H-BCmUeHE5c?feature=shared

Lolilie

Had no idea he was Richard Harris' son! I love Jared's performance in Fringe. It's small, but memorable.

Bellamy Blake

I love this mini series! But it doesn’t seem popular🥺 (it’s FREE on tubi, peacock, freevee and Amazon Prime. Check it out friends)

Osvaldo

I had planned to visit Chernobyl since I was always intrigued by it after playing the COD4 mission “All Ghillied Up” when I was 12 , but Russia invading Ukraine made that impossible.

Divayth Fyr

In the end of the day someone should keep a close eye on the 3d world countries like Russia. Of course the West had numerous f*ck ups with it's nuclear potential.. but never like this. Never without learning a lesson. Because in the East it's numbers over personality. They can sacrifice many and more.

Delane Gill

Brig with the Miguel from Love Island mention in the intro 👀

Madjoe

will yall react to Dark after this show? Or will there be another poll?

Ayo1210

Its been a really good weekend to be a Ferrari fan

Patriicia

ahh nice, but I dont know if this is a good watch while eating lunch

Patriicia

I read this under a youtube video and its actually interesting how they portrayed Dyatlov when in reality he wasnt that arrogant and bad. : The real Dyatlov tried to help others in the aftermath of the explosion. He personally went looking for Khodemchuk (quite the contrary of “fuck Khodemchuk”), and he twice ordered Toptunov to go home and later tried to send away Akimov as well, at a time when they both could have still saved themselves – they had spent most time in the control room and had not yet absorbed a fatal dose of radiation, in fact Dyatlov had received more radiation than them at that point. Which is why he became sick sooner and was carried away, while Akimov and Toptunov, still feeling well, decided that they should stay and help and went to the coolant valves, where they received their fatal dose. And the real Dyatlov never, ever tried to blame Akimov and Toptunov for what had happened. On the contrary, he even wrote Toptunov’s parents telling them that their son had fully done his duty and that the accusations that had been laid against him (Toptunov) were injust.

AnonX

Yoooo I got curious as well, but it was probably just an ad to another show

KPTree

From what I understand (which is just an interest, I’m not a nuclear engineer), the “contagiousness” of radiation poisoning was somewhat overhyped in the show, as in reality once the firefighters were out of their clothes and had been washed, they weren’t a danger to those around them anymore. They were already sentenced to death, because the damage to their DNA was done, but they were no longer radioactive. The portrayal of the firefighter and his wife is one of the few gripes that people had with the show in regards to realism, as they did a really good job presenting the story as we know it otherwise

Mr. Buddy Guy

Great episode! Notice how Boris made sure to make it known they’re “in line” with the KGB at the meeting so everyone knows and basically let the head kgb guy he knows. Skarzgard is the 🐐

Gaboxxy

@Griffin Yeah, but even in those cases of extreme exposure, it's not that radiation is contagious per se, but it's simply that there was more exposure to irradiated elements in the air, which are absorbed in the body and take a while to be ejected or fully absorbed by it. And even then, it's more about how you absorbed those element than even just the amount of radiation. . In the case of the Chernobyl incident, because the core literally exploded, it irradiated all the debris, dust and smoke in the air, making it extra dangerous as it was easily inhaled by all the people there. Those particles got lodged inside the victims bodies. Even then, though, the amount of radiation they would be transmitting to other people is minimal, it's more about the damage already done on a molecular level, which can't be stopped.

Josh

If I were to guess, this 'slot' will be replaced by another short show. Since this replaced Shogun.

Jessica

Are you watching it with them? How do you like it so far?

emma.bean

yes! first time watching. I wrote another comment somewhere in here after I finished the episode. I’m absolutely blown away by it so far.

G Don

Great reaction as per usual boys - love that you're enjoying the show, defo a slapper

Jessica

Oh I saw it now!! But wow that’s so fun you’re watching it with them and glad you like it!! It’s definitely heavy but well worth it, you learn a lot in these 5 episodes🤍

slavicandsapphic

Oh yall are not ready for the next one-

Dana

The one gripe i have with this otherwise almost perfect show ist that they don't really explain the difference between irradiation, contamination and radioactivity and chose to go for full dramatics. Just because a person was irradiated doesn't mean that they are now contagious and radioactive themself. When you got a sunburn through solar radiation, you're not going to emit solar radiation yourself and pass the sunburn along. It's basically the same with nuclear radiation. Once you are out of reach of the radiation you're good (not really, but you get the point). Cancer patients dont turn radioactive during (external) radiotherapy. The only problem occurs when there are radioactive particles (like the ash/dust from the reactor fire) on your skin, clothes, hair. When you don't wash those of and carry them around with you, you are indeed contagious and a danger to others. Even worse when you ingest those particles, because there is no way to get rid of them. Then you are radioactive yourself and also potentially contagious. I assume the firefighters did inhale radioactive dust and they were emitting some level of nuclear radiation, but the amount was probably significantly lower then the dosage Lyudmilla had already received during the time she stayed in Pripyat after the accident. And even if she got irradiated through her husband, then she still wouldn't be able to pass radiation along to others because she only received external radiation and is not radioactive herself.

slavicandsapphic

And from what it seems the creator actually believes it(according to the podcasts). I really hope someone’s educated him since he’s made the show but :/

Gaboxxy

Is Brig latino, btw? His spanish sounds quite good whenever he speaks it, and his quick celcius-farenheit conversion makes me think he might have lived in a country that uses celcius.

Renek

this show hit's diffrent from every other show , knowing all of this happend in real life is scary and disturbing

Chaffi

I think I remember that he mentioned that he lived in Argentina for a while.

Gaboxxy

@slavicandsapphic Yeah, they based that whole storyline on the actual memoir by the real Lyudmilla, and she herself believed it was contagious, so the showrunners just ran with that narrative.

Gaboxxy

@Chaffi Now that you said this, I do remember one of the boys telling him something along the lines of "no, but you are argentinian", but I can't remember the context for the life of me.

Gaboxxy

Hell, most people don't really understand how radiation works in our time period.

Fatipapi

Jackson 'try not to call anyone dumb' challenge 😂
