tbh Sean, based off some of your comments & reviews I’ve seen in the past - I don’t think it’s your cup of tea but I’m not sure how well versed you are with anime & battle shonen specifically so if you’ve immersed yourself into anime quite a bit I think you’ll enjoy it but the slow pacing in OG Naruto might kill your motivation to continue the show

I’ve seen some of your thoughts on AOT. Naruto and AOT are both top-tier, but in different aspects—each does certain things (far) better than the other. Like you mentioned, watching Naruto is an immense commitment, but if you do watch it, the eventual payoff is virtually unmatched.

Just one comment on dub vs sub: I have listened to comparisons, and I have to say, the villains sound INCREDIBLE in dub. It is some of the best voice acting in a dubbed anime that I have heard. They all sound truly menacing. Naruto's voice may take getting used to, but just like in sub, it is a woman. I prefer the dub of this show.

Definitely not for you, although I would be curious on your thoughts. Naruto is a show that has flaws all over the place and the reason fans love it is because of the other aspects that do shine through and the all time highs of the series. The problem is it takes way too many hours to get there and is riddled with things that would for sure turn you away because the writing is not up to par of the shows in your all time favorites. The highs are very good so it IS worth it if you have the time and the patience, and I don’t know if you would have either. It used to be my favorite show when I first watched it years ago. It all just depends on how much tolerance you have if you are a critical viewer

Most stuff that comes easy to Sakura or she is good at revolves around chakra control which she has always been naturally good at. Which is why she was the first one to climb a tree out of the group. Medical ninjutsu, breaking out of Genjutsu, her crazy taijutsu strength

the best part of Narutos dub is the villains. Definitely check out itachi/pain/sasori and pretty much all the Akatsuki members voices. Aside from Jiraiya/Gaara/Kakashi and a select few others, i didnt care much for the dub voices of the good guys

Alright last and only comment on the sub v dub, Sub slaps and i doubt anyone would disagree, the Dub also goes off and there is a certain voice actor that many believe is the greatest dub va of all in it. I didn't watch OG Naruto and Shippuden until after I had already experienced other anime (AoT, FMAB, Demon Slayer, etc), and knowing that it was older beforehand kinda made my expectations lower. I really like OG, but I'm not a huge fan of then having been kids the entire time. I think that's why I'm a much bigger fan of Shippuden, that and the fact that its just better overall. Shippuden is one of my favorites. Much like Brig said, its not my objective favorite, but its definitely one of my subjective favorites. Just a question, I didn't watch much of your guys' reaction to OG simply because the sheer amount of episodes and its just not as good, but how are you guys going to handle the filler? Will you be skipping it? This show has like 500 episodes and I think there's like 50 episodes + of filler. Just curious. Hope you guys enjoy

the dub flashbacks are a little rough but the dub really does fit the tone of the characters better especially for some of the peak moments, but its probably too much of a change to switch now that youre 100+ episodes in and used to sub. should be chill as long as you stay on the good subtitles

the bell "training" thing is like rating or gauging the training they got. like testing how far they've been so that they will be given proper missions that match their strength and skills and level of analyzing situations (I think that's the rationale)

I agree with Brig, I like both the sub and dub of Naruto and would prefer the dub on most rewatches. There are a few stinkers in the dub but other than the background characters, I think the dub voices fit most of the characters. For example I prefer the dub voices of Gaara, Jiraiya, Itachi, Might Guy, Deidara, and a few other characters you haven't met yet. But I also find some characters to be interchangeable between the sub and dub, examples: Sasuke, Kakashi, Shikamaru, Tsunade, Sakura, and Rock Lee(except for the first dozen episodes he's in, his voice in sub sounds so off). I only drop the dub in the last 100 episodes cause a voice that's like nails on a chalk board for me.

Yeah and quite a few filler episodes are half and half so hopefully they don’t skip those. If I remember correctly there are some important parts in those kinds of episodes and I think I accidentally skipped them and I was lost on some parts😭

I'll be honest here as a fan, like me, there are many others here who aren't native from the U.S, and watching anime dubbed in English completely changes the experience. Switching to dub might be good for some people but what about the rest of your subscribers? Don’t we deserve to be included too? The original Japanese audio is much better for many of us, as that’s how the majority have accessed anime. It doesn’t make sense to change now. We watched all of Naruto in Japanese, and now we’re expected to switch? We’ve already had Fullmetal Alchemist dubbed, where many people complained about not being included, and yet it’s happening again.

Wow, hopefully this side by side is a great example on how distinct they made EVERYONE'S voice in sub. Tsunade and Shizune sound, if not exactly, almost the same, and Kakashi's epicness which includes his amazing sub voice is obliterated in an instant with that Google translate monotone. I don't think these differences have anything to do with how far in you've watched or not but I do understand its about nostalgia for some. I think yotube Mashups for dub would be great to avoid the rest of the bad IMO. I won't loose my sleep with the dub tho, i tried so 😴

Carter’s mindset of “waiting for it to get there” is just going to disappoint, it’s like the opposite effect of people commenting on GOT. Hopefully he just watches the show in the moment without waiting for it to get better because he’ll just create expectations in his head that may or may not be true but can ruin the overall experience of the show. All that said, this is also my least favorite arc of shippuden (next one is 2nd) but I still really like it! 🤣

I think we need to ease up on hyping this show for Carter. His expectations need to be set low, or he iss going to end up disappointed. I can already see it being a struggle for him. I hope I'm wrong, but too much hype can set the bar way too high, especially since he didn’t grow up with this anime and was only lukewarm on the OG series. When this originally aired, there was a formula to shonen anime, and week-to-week pacing was the norm. The anime was constantly catching up to the manga, so they had to artificially slow down the shows. Looking back, Bleach and Naruto both suffered from this. And if you didn’t grow up with it as an early anime fan, it could be pretty rough. I remember being 10 years old, watching Dragonball Z on Toonami, and after reaching the end of the Frieza arc, the show would start all over again. The disappointment was real, and it happened a lot. But in a way, it trained me to be patient with anime in the future. We all know how padded DBZ was, but it set the foundation for what to expect with story pacing. By the time Naruto and Bleach were airing, drawn-out scenes were already part of the experience, though the pacing issues were more subtle. Watching week to week felt like a cycle. Naruto would hit filler, Bleach would be in canon arcs, and then Bleach would switch to filler while Naruto returned to canon. That was just how it was back then. And when both were in filler at the same time? That was brutal. Honestly, I don’t think Carter would have survived that era. Those drawn out scenes were done on purpose, and the pacing doesn’t change much in Shippuden. So Carter, temper your expectations. Shippuden may have more mature themes, but in many ways, it’s still fundamentally the same as OG Naruto. For me, OG Naruto was perfect. A beautiful story packed with emotion, with every arc building on the last. Shippuden continues that, but I don’t know if anyone who loves Shippuden didn’t also love OG. You don’t get Shippuden without OG. Unfortunately, I don’t think you’ll escape the classic Naruto formula, and I doubt it’ll resonate with you the same way it does with me, Brig, or McKay. There was something magical about watching it, even with all its flaws. The emotional weight this show carried, and still carries, is what keeps me coming back. I hope to crap I'm wrong and you love the show. I would love it. Either way I'll be here for the ride. Sorry for the YAPFEST.

You should watch it in DUB: it will help you understand the show better like the last fight in OG, the dub voice actors are more emotive and the comedy in the dub is funnier for a western audience Also with the poor pacing until episode 75 you don't have to waste your concentration reading the subtitles.

Yep exactly. The way Naruto fans (myself included in the past) talk about this show makes it sound like the best show ever made and it is very far from that. A lot of factors like nostalgia and a persons ability to turn a blind eye to writing issues can play big roles as well. Carter has neither of those things. I’m still very confident he will really enjoy the peaks of shippuden, but at the end of the day you are correct, it is more similar to og than he is probably expecting

I didn't get into Naruto until I was 23, I've followed basically the exact same track as the "haters". It's nothing about growing up with the show, despite the pacing and aging stuff about it in relation to current shows like JJK, Shippuden was an absolute thrill for me. I didn't follow each episode intently so the slow moments might not have affected me as much but my God we're in for a treat, and I grew to love this show beyond what I ever expected. I found myself rewinding chunks of episodes to make sure I knew exactly what was going on, something I'd never do for a show I didn't care enough about. Just to say for sure there are spans or scenes I don't care for, but the overall experience lands it as a top show of all time for me personally. Don't be afraid to get hopes up, I trust the guys to come to their own conclusions, but I absolutely love this show, as someone who came into it with zero nostalgic reliance.

I have to agree with Carter about the OG Naruto.. I tried to rewatch it with you guys but it's a DRAG. I never was a huge Naruto fan to begin with but Shippuden is great. Unpopular opinion here probably but I think you might have enjoyed Bleach more (at least than OG). I'm probably just biased because Bleach is my fave out of the Big 3. It would have been more interesting also because none of you have seen it yet if I remember correctly. Bleach isn't perfect either, it has it's problems too though. I'm glad you guys are finally watching Shippuden though and looking forward to the uploads as it would be nice to rewatch it since it's been quite a long time I have seen it. If you've loved Dragon Ball, there is a CHANCE you'll LOVE Naruto... But you're right it is a pretty big commitment. What I'm gonna reccommend is for you to just watch the first 19-20 eps... Practically the introduction and then the first real arc of the show. The first Arc itself is by no means the best or even close to being the best arc. It's pacing isnt very good and the animation isnt consistent(and it can get pretty damn corny). But its an arc that represents Naruto's core themes and how Naruto executes its storytelling. It's far from perfect, and is arguably one of the worst animanga-canon arcs in OG series, but you can get a pretty good idea what Naruto is about from the arc. If you hate it... Stop right there and drop the show. However if you do find yourself liking it, I would to suggest keep watching cause it generally gets better and even better later on. A lot of the issues that you likely would've had with the first arc will become less of a problem as you keep on watching right after. Also ofc, I shouldn't have to say this but I'll say it anyway; skip the filler and recaps.

The rapid movement and disappearing into smoke is actually the flash-step or Teleportation technique. It's not explained well in the anime, but they basically just load their legs with chakra to make a single high speed movement, and will usually cover it with a small smoke bomb to conceal where they went. It's not a shadow clone, and despite the name it's not teleportation either

Yeah I think it’s feature of shonens from that time, a lot of time spent on mini recaps and battles getting drawn out over multiple episodes when being mixed with scenes which are happening elsewhere. I feel like I can’t watch it without using the 10second skip button a bunch 😂 I also hope they get around to bleach as well, I feel like they all enjoyed the first episode a lot when they watched it a while back and it’s a nice plus that none of them have seen the series before. Just finished the reaction and Im genuinely confused why you feel a bit underwhelmed Carter & desiring more already within the first 4 episodes. After 2 1/2 years, we're getting reintroduced to the characters, see a brief future encounter with Naruto, Sakura & Sasuke & the plot is moving in a strong direction. The akatsuki have begun to make there move again & two of there members are currently in a fierce battle to retrieve Gaara & the "One tailed" sealed within him. I can see why you don't find Naruto & sakura's bell training to be that intriguing but genuinely asking, were you expecting to be thrown into some sort of climax? I'm genuinely wondering and it would be very much appreciated if you reply to this comment giving your thoughts cause you said that you feel like you are always waiting for something to happen on the horizon with Naruto but I feel like the anime dropped straight into the plot regarding this mysterious, villainous group named The "akatsuki" within the first 4 episodes yet in the post discussion you seemed unsatisfied.

The flashbacks and the long staring scenes doing absolutely nothing are the worst, and this is coming from a huge Naruto fan, it takes away from how awesome this anime is, the manga was amazing but when it was adapted to anime it’s really drawn out, i just wished the pacing was faster…. But yeah, as Brig says, it is still the goat, but just need to set expectations that the flashbacks, and the long staring of not moving scenes lol, even as a Naruto fan, it was hard for me to get past that… it’s been a long time since i’ve rewatched this because of that reason, but i’m excited to watch it with you guys, i really hope you enjoy!!! Stats are not that important in this show, but Carter was right that Kakashi is the GOAT on paper. According to the official databook, Kakashi’s stats at the start of Shippuden (34.5/40) are actually higher than the third Hokage in OG (34/40), but at this moment he definitely isn’t stronger than the third Hokage. Kakashi has one of the highest stats in the show due to his versatility. By the way Zabuza’s stats were 30.5/40, while Kakashi’s were 33/40 back then. Naruto and Sakura’s stats at this moment are 26/40, which does show how strong Zabuza was. Naruto and Sakura are stronger than their stats, but they’re not versatile so they score low.

When I watched OG Naruto, for me, it was not even close to having a goat status or even being great. It was just fun experience and it keept me on my toes. I even skipped cannon episodes to get through it faster because I keept hearing that Shippuden is the goat. I got attached to characters early in Shippuden. I started binging it and it just made my experience better. First two arcs are the worst arcs of Shippuden for me. Pacing is awful and there are unnecessary moments but it somehow didn't bother me because I binged it and it was the only show I had on my mind. Around episode 80 it gets really good and it doesn't stop from there. Aot is my second favourite anime, even tho I think it is the most compact and the best written show there is. But Naruto Shippuden takes first place because of the emotion it brings out of you. I cried watching AoT but for Shippuden; there were sad tears, happy tears...And it wasn't nostalgia because I watched it 4 years ago, when I was 20. The story just falls perfectly into a place. Rewatching OG with you, I completely understand Carter; for me it would be 6.4 out of 10 even. You come to appreciate OG later, after you see the greatness in Shippuden. Still, I was enjoying it from the start of the Shippuden and it never felt like 'waiting for a good moment' for me. I just joined your patreon and I sincerely hope you will drop more episodes a week of Shippuden ( atleast 6-9 like you said you will do with OP) 🙏

this is gonna be one of the best runs for yall. Word of warning for Carter, the start of Shippuden aired just a bit after part 1 so the formula is a bit of the same for these 1st two arcs. They are still good in their own rights but definitely have their flaws. After that is probably the 4 best back to back arcs in shonen.

I don't understand Carter this time. I feel like we jumped right into action this time. The most logical thing is for them to introduce us to changes in their development or personality and the bell test was the best way to do it. Having it go back to back with Gaara fight, a fight that you anticipate to see the outcome, really makes up for maybe 'boring' side of the bell test

I remember watching Shippuden weekly. It was really hyped then and I really liked the ost. I remember being sad that I won’t be able to hear the ost/ninja sounds after it was finished. And maybe after watching naruto you will be able to play the Ninja Storm 4. Me and my friends played it together and I beat them all lol. And the characters I played in the game became my favorite characters in the anime. It elevated my experienced to naruto as a whole.

To Carter's point about how Kakashi should probably be the goat, stamina is the one thing holding him back. That's the only reason Zabuza even had a shot was because Kakashi uses up so much chakra using his Sharingan.

The hate for the Shadow Clone from some of you is crazy , like, we've seen it be effective more than once. Of course it's not gonna be completely effective every single time, or else the anime would advance pretty quickly as it's basically Naruto's main jutsu. On the other hand, we've never seen the Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu even come close to being remotely effective in any situation so far, yet you don't have nearly the same amount of contempt towards it as you have with the Shadow Clone Jutsu. I like to compare the experience of watching this show to something like building a house. You start by laying one brick at a time. Lore about Kakashi sharingan: Kakashi is indeed good at everything and an undeniable genius, but they didn't want to create a Gojo situation so the lore nerfed him. Kakashi was already a Goat since young age, he has only one problem that makes him weaker: The Sharingan. The thing is that the Sharingan was not "made" to work on a body that is no an Uchiha's. The Uchiha's have enormous amount of chakra, while Kakashi has less then the average for a jounin. As the Sharingan consumes a lot of Charkra, that holds him back. Another point is that Uchihas can activate and deactivate their sharingan to not spend needless chakra, whilst Kakashi's sharingan is active 24/7 constantly draining his chakra, as he cant turn it off. Thats why he limits its use as much as he can by covering it. The sahringan is a great boon, but at the same time, the real reason why Kakashi is not the biggest goat of the verse.

I'm gonna be honest I'm just gonna give up on Carter ever really liking this show and that's okay. I don't think it's gonna happen. Like Brig said, if during the Sasuke and Naruto fight you're not really locked into the show then it's kind of an uphill battle. I think he was appreciative and enjoyed his time during that fight but he never seemed really really touched or invested and Shippuden is more of the same with just higher highs. That's why I love the show but I just don't think Carter will ever forgive this show for what he dislikes in it. I'm not discouraging the idea of his turning around on the show or saying he needs to but I think I'm just gonna have to have no expectations with him

To this day ill say people in the fandom hate Sakura cuz she's useless but forget the author made sasuke and Naruto crazy strong with abilities while Sakura has nothing like family power or demon in her, plus her character was introduced with no major trauma and backstory. She's an ordinary human like us while her teammates. They might as well be superhumans compared to her. So from the beginning i found her annoying yes, but she was shown as an ordinary smart girl from her class and a typical school crush to then suddenly find herself in this drama yes she became a ninja knowing the risk but like i mentioned she's not gonna suddenly be super powerful because it was shown to us early on how she had no special abilities heck sasuke was immediately introduced as the last survivor of the Uchiha clan. One more thing and I'm just mentioning this i never understood some people bashing the ANBU they literally are always shown fighting S- rank criminal and being killed so people expect them to be powerful in the beginning when they are not. Lol that's enough for this paragraph. I just wanted to state these thing especially since the fandom always like to point out stuff but never notice these things or if they do ignore it and bash on characters when it was predicted it would come out like this and Kishimoto definitely let the ball drop for characters story arcs.

For me it was always her personality. Though, I tend to dislike most of the female cast of Naruto for the way they are written. Most are one dimensional, with sole goal of either chasing the man they’re in love with or being a mother. Both are fine but when almost every female character falls under this category while all the male leads have these incredible aspirations, beyond women, it’s hella annoying. Sakura is the perfect representation of poorly written female character. We can make excuses for her all we want but the reality is there’s very little that makes her compelling. And again, this is not about her being weaker than Naruto and Sasuke or useless (which she is throughout the Naruto og if you think about it) actually think it would be an interesting topic to explore of how difficult it is to keep up if you don’t have kekkei genkai in the world of Naruto. But no, ofc show barely recognises that. Her constant tears, yelling, basically everything about her revolving around Sasuke, the way she treats Naruto, acting like scared civilians when she’s a trained ninja just like everyone else, etc. All of these traits showcased in Naruto OG alone make her at least an annoying character

For me she was never that annoying. She was sometimes when she was chasing Sasuke even though he did her wrong. I was rewatching fight with Sasori the other day and I remember thinking that her personality was so great there; her willingness to sacrifice herself for a granny she barely knew and her courage made me think that that moments alone were enough for her to be seen as great character, or atleast as a character with certain qualities. Hm I wonder if the reason why Carter has such a hard time articulating why he doesn’t like Naruto is simply bc for him it just doesn’t “hit” (idk its a hard feeling to describe). Don’t get me wrong, I love Naruto and I really enjoyed it, but it isn’t a show without its flaws, so maybe its easier to attribute those reasons as to why he doesn’t like it (as I'm sure they don't help). I’ve watched other shows before where objectively I couldn’t say there was anything bad about it - good plot, pacing, characters etc…. but it just didn’t hit and nothing anyone says can change that cause its just my personal connection with it. I don’t understand how people are actually losing their minds just because Carter doesn’t like Naruto. How does that impact your opinion on the show? Your experiences, opinions, feelings about Naruto are not invalid just because a random person doesn’t agree. Putting so much expectations and pressure on him is not just gonna ruin his experience with the show but also yours. Try to enjoy the reactions regardless. That’s why it’s really risky hyping up a show beforehand … They hyped it up real hard for Carter and now his expectations aren’t being met. Not complaining though, not everyone will like every anime.

idk but Naruto reactions became interesting when I knew that Carter does not like it (cuz in the beginning I did not want to re watch naruto with the geks), it is really good and funny to see at least he is genuine, and I can see the difference between him and Cannon clearly in receiving this show, I loved when Cannon did not want Naruto to grow up and still be silly with his sexy jutsu because I understand that feeling haha, also if some ppl really get offended because someone does not like their show, please get a life, im serious like this is an issue, you are so disconnected with reality, ppl out there dying to survive and you are hating because of a disagreement on a show, fix your life please im not saying this out of hate im serious

Naruto OG was my favorite as a kid. It had humor, epic moments, heartbreaking moments and good backstory. I did like Naruto Shippuden as well. I forgot the first episode started out like that. I was confused at first because it has been a while since I've watched Naruto Shippuden, but then I understood. I think Sakura has grown as both a person and kunoichi compared to the first episode of OG Naruto. It was interesting to see more of the Akatsuki members. I believe the substance Deidara uses is clay. He's an interesting character for sure. I think Naruto is still considered a Genin. I believe you have to pass the Chunin exams to move on. I'm not sure if they make exceptions or not based on skill. Great reactions! Curious to see what you guys think moving forward.

I'm gonna stick it through with you guys, but I can already see the stuff that made me drop this popping back up again. At the time I was watching as it was airing so skipping ahead wasn't an option, and between the fillers and constant flashbacks my brain just forgot half of what was happening. Here you think "oh the shows been gone for a while so the flashbacks make sense" but when you're over a hundred episodes into Shippuden the flashbacks will have long overstayed their welcome. Hopefully being able to skip filler and see them in batches will make it more bearable. Also at least Sakura had a glowup here. Naruto only does things he could do pre-time skip. Sakura went from being the only genin that we saw to have ZERO ninjutsu of any kind. Every other genin in the leaf has some special technique or form of combat, even Tenten, but Sakura had nothing.

@M2GZ I wouldn't say it sucks, it's just that, like most Anime of that era, it didn't age great due to the weekly formula instead of seasons like most Anime nowadays. Back then, because of the sheer amount of episodes they had to release due to it being a weekly show, and the constant fear of catching up to the manga, episodes were drawn out a lot and filler elements inserted in otherwise canon episodes.

2 and a half years pass by and all naruto learns are the basics and clone coordination. Kindoff a let down considering how long he trained with a jiraya, a legendary sannin. sakura on the other hand actually improved far more in that span of time. If there is a reason for such little improvement, i guess the author want us to be a part of narutos future improvements/character development. And he's not wrong. Although it sucks that we dont get to see them jump into action immediately, the wait actually aint that bad in comparison to og naruto. And there's nothing wrong with spam and eggs

Actually i forgot to mention something which you brought into my attention. Naruto learned the basics, clone coordination, AND the posibility for nine tails control. In ep 1 we see the nine tails manifest outside the sealed gate. Which means, whatever jiraya did in that 2 1/2 years, it was to achieve better linkage or resonance between naruto and nine tails so that naruto can use the nine tails chakra without naruto having to drain all of his chakra first. I guess thats the major thing jiraya focused on. If thats the case then it actually makes sense and impressive. Jiraya managed to make a link between ninetails and naruto(which you could imagine takes a long time) and improved narutos overall battle experience.

Man, fair to prefer the Dub when you’ve watched hundreds of episodes in sub. Don’t sleep on it after just one flashback episode tho. If I recall correctly you guys tried the dub in the start of OG during the bell test too. Just watch it how you guys wanna watch it, but y’all should definitely check out some scenes after you guys finish it!👌🏼

I know the recap intros feel repetitive, and the recap scenes may start to get frustrating as they do for many!! BUT for perspective, naruto (both og & shippuden together) aired nearly an *episode a week* for 15 years (2002-2017) - these came out incredibly quickly, so both the limitations of creating an episode per week and the need to remind weekly watchers what aired years ago necessitated both the recap intros *and* the heavy cutscenes - it served as both a big reminder to viewers during a time you couldn't look up/watch episodes easily and also padded episodes that needed to be animated and turned around quickly. Thankfully, in some of the best parts of the show, this occurs far less and more tastefully, as more of a plot device. The animation will also certainly get better as you keep watching - the episodes you watched today were aired with the improved animation styles of 2007 😭❤️ I know recaps will continue to be frustrating at times but I hope this helps it make sense some!! (This is also why both series have so much filler - they needed to let the manga, which also published once a week, catch up while still satisfying viewers!)

I'll break this up into short pieces so you'll read it. The conclusions i made came from the episodes they've already watched, which is og naruto and shippuden 1-4. All you have to do is think about the interactions between naruto and kurama from og naruto to episode 1 where they show kurama manifesting outside the sealed gate.
