Every school year there’s 2 nationals. Shiratorizawa have already been, and lost, so they’re competing again in the second tournament to head back to nationals. Whoever wins this tournament goes to the next nationals. Ushijima is on the national team because when he gets out of high school he’s going to be on the Japanese Olympic team. That’s different from nationals and it’s just stating his potential to be a professional athlete once he graduates. Don’t worry too much about the national team, that’s just future Olympian stuff.

Each tournament has nationals. The spring tournament and Inter high are both national level comps. There's just qualifying rounds in each prefecture. Don't forget Japan is a lot smaller than the US, so scale wise this would be closer to a State level championship where there are 2 tournaments per year. smaller prefectures get 1 representative while bigger ones get more based off of their size. Hosting prefecture also gets an extra spot (in this case Tokyo).

Also, I'm fairly sure someone explained this in the comments before, but if you recall the part where other teams were reading "Karasuno" as "Torino".. well, you can see above exactly why that happened. The Kanji for Crow (Karasu) and Kanji for Bird (Tori) are very similar. And it also serves to show that the people who misread it have no idea who the hell Karasuno even is, because they just aren't a powerhouse school anymore.

OK so ill try to make this as simple as possible. They are currently studying in order to go to Tokyo for a training camp with Nekoma and others, in order to get strong enough to go to nationals. In order to make it to nationals though they will have to defeat both Oikawa and Ushiwaka in the spring tournament qualifier in 2 months. Spring Tournament = Nationals

If you guys want a lil bit more of this studying mini arc, there is an OVA that goes more in deep on what happen between ep3 and ep4. It will not affect the plot at all, but it's a good slice of life episode, it even has some family relationships and more personal relationships with the boys as "friends" and not just team mates. It's called "VS failed exams" and it's best to watch it after episode 3, it's hilarious lol

Basically: the tournament they lost last season was the Interhigh preliminaries in Miyagi which happens in every prefecture and the winner(s) goes to Inter High nationals. Right now they're preparing for the Spring Tournament preliminaries in Miyagi which works the same way, winner of the prefecture goes to Spring Nationals, some prefectures are bigger and more than one school is chosen for nationals in those regions. I think i saw someone say spring tournament is usually more competitive bc thats when teams are more established? But I'm not completely sure

Great reactions! Yachi is hilarious! These two episodes were nice. It's gives a nice break before training. There is also an OVA that shows more of the studying. You may want to check the order in when it should be watched. I'm thinking between epsiode three and 4 or after 4. I'm excited for the next reactions!

Also, again with the cultural context lol The show doesn't explain things that Japanese people already know, like what a manager does or what kind of tournaments there are. A manager is an aid to everyone in the team, it can go to just passing balls, getting water and towels, to looking for new members and be in charge of getting things organized with the teachers and school management. Schools with big teams usually have 2 managers. The tournaments that are mentioned already are 2. First is the Inter high, this is a national tournament. The boys participate in the prelims and lost against Seijoh. The school that went to that nationals was Shiratorizawa. The other tournament is the Spring tournament, the one they are training for right now. They will be playing the qualifiers first and whoever wins the regional qualifiers will go to nationals. This will be in Tokyo, that's why they mentioned it. There are 2 nationals tournaments every year in Haikyuu. Ushiwaka being in the U19 team is independent of the national tournaments. National tournament are for schools, the u19 is for the national team to compete against other countries. I really hope this help 😅

Seen people explain already so I'll try to keep it brief. There are mainly 2 tournaments shown/referenced in the show so far. The InterHigh tournament (takes place in the summer) and the Spring tournament (takes place in late winter/early Spring). Both of these are National level tournaments and are referred to as 'nationals' interchangeably at different points in the show. They are separate events so they are qualified for independently of each other. The tournament we watch in season 1 is the prefectural qualifier for the InterHigh tournament. In Miyagi (Karasuno's prefecture) only ONE representative qualifies for either national tournament. At this point, Shiratorizawa, having won the InterHigh prefectural qualifier by beating Aoba Johsai *again*, will have already competed in the InterHigh nationals at some point between the seasons and are now preparing for the Spring tournament preliminaries just like Karasuno TLDR: Interhigh and Spring tournaments are both national tournaments and have separate qualifiers so winning/losing one has no bearing on whether or not you qualify for the other.

His school’s name is Shiratorizawa and the first two Kanji (characters) is white and bird that’s why there is a flying bird scene after the HINATA SHOYO FROM THE CONCRETE scene bec Karasuno’s kanji is Black Crows and Shiratorizawa is white bird. Crows vs White bird 🐦 🙈 my Japanese sucks and my ancestors are totally disappointed but I’m pretty sure that’s the connection 😅👉👈 I just felt like sharing ~

Haikyuu is actually one of the few anime’s that does tropes right… like I actually laugh out loud! Anyways, I love this season, not my all time favorite but I think it’s top 2 in my book! I can’t wait!!

Shiratorizawa Academy is fictional but their school is based on a real school, Tohoku International School. Tohoku International School mascot is a white eagle. Once again, a gentle reminder, please don't look for Haikyu's real life locations yet as there may be spoilers. However you can look for just Tohoku International School if you want to see the similarities between the school and Shiratorizawa.

Kageyama is in class 3. Just below class 4 & 5, the advanced classes. Hinata class 1. That boy is clearly academically dumb lol What we've learned about Kageyama is that he has a very strong personality and stubborn. I think he's being voluntarily dumber academically lol cause he's mentally obstinate in not caring about anything that's not to do with volleyball, especially English, the subject he's failed miserably. He said it himself in this ep here, "Japanese don't speak English" I could see him adding to that, "Why bother". He knows he's a genius in volleyball and he believes absolutely that he'll be a global level player one day. Just like, in a past episode, his reply challenging Hinata at the bottom of the stairs of the club building when Hinata said he's going to beat Kageyama in the future, Kageyama asked " .. even at the Olympics?" something like that. English subject is just something he mentally does not want to learn so he's having a harder time to score higher marks in hat subject lol His verbal linguistic intelligence maybe a bit below par too.

About how the upcoming tournament works. They are training for the spring preliminary tournament. They have to beat seijoh AND shirotorizawa to move on to the national stage of the spring tournament. And yes the third years will be allowed to play in nationals if they make it (that's part of the deal for them choosing to stay on). They have laid it all out pretty well for how the tournaments work, I just think there's so much information to absorb that you guys have missed a few important explanations ( Which is perfectly fine don't worry it will all make sense :) ).

Jsyk, In sports anime theres typically 2different tournaments/ national chances per school year. theres either the spring/summer tournament that will take u to the spring or summer naionals, and the fall/winter tournament that will take you to the fall or winter nationals. so on average for the three years they are in High school in a sports anime, a regular player would participate in about 5 tournaments, 6 if they do what the third years in this show are doing

So his name is Wakatoshi Ushijima and his nickname is Ushiwaka, a combination of parts of his full name. Ushiwaka is the name a of legendary Japanese warrior. I’ve seen it compared to an American myth like Paul Bunyan. It’s said he could jump across ravines or something along those lines. He had a sidekick known as Benkei. There’s an old anime movie about the duo that was released in 1939.

So excited for season 2! The tropes can be a lot in the beginning, especially with Yachi’s introduction, but she definitely felt more fleshed out later on and now I love her. Carter talking about the slice of life made me so happy, he got his wish lol

Ahh I'm so happy that you guys have started season 2! "From the concrete" is such an iconic line from Hinata. It's one of the fandom's favourite quotes HAHAHA! Ushijima Wakatoshi is one of my favourite characters haha! His nickname is "UshiWaka" (a combination of his last name "Ushi" and his first name "Waka"). They call him this because UshiWaka happens to be the childhood name of a famous Japanese warrior in history, who was known to have extreme jumping ability(or smth along those lines). Since both the historical warrior and Ushijima are such beasts, they gave the nickname UshiWaka to him to refer to his monstrous ability in the volleyball scene! We'll see more of him in the future that's for sure! Oh, and, fun fact! Shiratorizawa's mascot or animal representative is a white eagle! It comes from the "Shiratori" in their school's name, which can be read as "white bird"! "She's the worst character in the show" BOYYY when I tell you my jaw dropped JVWHHJBE Shimizu hasn't really gotten much screen time so far and we don't see her contributing very much as of this moment, but I promise that everyone in Haikyuu gets a chance to shine, most of all Karasuno members. She's their manager, and she helps with behind the scenes stuff like recording the progress of their matches, handling administrative work with Takeda sensei, and also offers a lot of moral support to the team as a whole (as seen from season 1 episode 12/13 when she cleaned their cool banner and gave them encouragement). She's really an overlooked character, but she's really kind and wise, and is a nice contrast to the craziness of the team haha! "That's assuming this tournament takes the entire season 2" HAHAHAHAHA the way I cackled. Loving the predictions as always. This season starts a little slow as well, since we're getting introduced to new characters, but it's not nearly as slow as season 1 so don't worry! Momentum is gonna pick up and you'll be wanting to binge the whole season in no time!

I was a bit confused when I first watched this show too but, the tournament from season 1 was called the Inter-High and has an Inter-High Nationals. This tournament upcoming in season 2 is called the Spring Tournament and has its own separate nationals.
