Zenah

Hey guys i just thought of this why dont you react to wicked the movie i think it will be funny because i think it is not your type of media and all of you can be haters for once. Maybe bring your sister if she watched it.

Betsy

No freaking way!! It's actually my first watch. Glad it's with you guys.

Amna 🍉

NO I WAS JUST GOING TO SLEEP😭

nocomprendo

Memories of murder (same director as parasite) and Oldboy are the best south korean movies

Elle B.

10:25 That’s Soju, McKay!

I’m Tired

Love this movie a couple of my fav actors in here

El

Oh my god you guys, pls do watch romulus. Haha I’ve been binging alien movies lately because of that movie. It’s good! Also, DUNE pls~

Luke Fox

If you guys haven't watched Godzilla Minus One yet please watch that its a masterpeice

El

3:21 Mckay nooo not Alice in Borderland but Train to Busan.

Débora Silva

So excited for this!! Thank you guys :)

Anya

Aaahh! omg! no way! stfu! gtfoh! Apologies, incoherent I am when excited! Keep the K-dramas coming🙌 Y'all are the gift that keeps on giving! Mahalo🫶

Alex Ramirez

They said the girl is a sophomore. So she's like 15-16. No idea what the age of consent is in Korea but I would imagine that it's still sus for her to kiss her tutor.

Betsy

Hey Anya! I know it's crazy. Yeah I've only watched clips and trailers. Lol I had it on Amazon to order a few times but always changed my mind. Also since they're doing more K-Media now, do you think they might do Weak Hero Class 1, or All of Us are Dead by chance? 😭

Anya

My fellow K-drama lover! I would've thought you watched everything! 😂 Hmm...I know we discussed this a few times lol Wasn't too sure before but now I think it can happen 😃

Anya

Ugghh yess please when that day comes we can rejoicify 💚🩷

Monalisa

The main actor Choi wooshik was in train to busan too. He was the baseball player. Parasite won Oscar! It’s such a great movie🔥

Betsy

Me too!! There's a light at the end of the tunnel. Haha Yeah even though I've watched almost 100 k-dramas or so, I've only watched like 15 K-movies such as Always, Forgotten, Unlocked, Train to Busan, Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, The Host, A Taxi Driver, Alive, Emergency Declaration, etc. And right now, I'm watching Study Group 😂

Jewell Maclin

It’s definitely fun seeing Brig being the one guessing and everyone else exchanging looks 😂 it’s always the other way around

Anya

Yes! Anything is possible. Well I'm not one to talk because I haven't seen Train to Busan until them sooo lol But yeah I guess series and movie would be different Is that the one based on a webtoon?

Betsy

Very true! It's okay. No biggie and yeah it's a manhwa. I've started reading it. I love how it gives off Weak Hero Class 1 vibes but much lighter and with comedy. It's on Viki Rakuten if you're interested. Episode 3 and 4 come out on Wednesday. Hope they do a Kdrama Poll now or just randomly surprise us with Weak Hero Class 1 or All of Us are Dead one day ☺️🤞

Anya

Gamin right?? I think I added it on my reading list.

Betsy

Yes that's the main character's name, Gamin Yoon who just wants a study group desperately. It's cute and funny lol

Fujiie

Watching this again will get me ready for Mickey 17 soon 😁

sleepymiffi

will you guys react to more studio ghibli one day? like Ponyo?🫶

Betsy

Aww Ponyo will always have my heart... It's such a precious film. 💕

Anya

🤣🤣yes that's the one! I believe The Glory made top four so I think after that we can get into Weak Hero Class 1 and others. But it would be nice to have their own spot. They'd love it and it does good on channels. Their soo busy though so it'll have to battle in the LA polls lol

Betsy

Yeah you're right. I also love The Glory. I binged it when it came out in 2022. I was hooked. Haha And hope they do a poll. I think it's well deserved now. There's so many K-dramas I know for a fact that they would absolutely love such as Weak Hero Class 1, All of Us are Dead, The Glory, The Uncanny Counter, Study Group, Sweet Home, Death's Game, etc. Well Sweet Home maybe not so much because of the music and pacing. It kind of dragged later on. I didn't finish season 2 😂

Fatipapi

OOOOH letsgooo!!! I havent seen this yet and been wanting to watch it. Perfectttt to watch it with yalll later today! 😁

Anya

Right?! Those are all good choices! I've seen a lot of people recommending more K-media so it can happen🙌 Well hope you enjoy your first watch! I'll let you go because I'm taking you away from it lol You know me and you can talk all day haha Until next time 🫶

Betsy

Yes for sure. Anya we can! It's cool. I always enjoy our conversations and thanks. Here's to hoping. lol I'll see you later today when they post the season 1 finale of Alice in Borderland. Talk you later, Anya 🤗❤👀

Betsy

I really wish there was a private message function on here so the comment section isn't so blown up by our conversations. Not that I don't enjoy them but it makes me feel a little awkward sometimes when I talk so much lol 😭

Drakon

im loving the hoodie brig :)

Anya

Right?! But for now, as long as we're under our own threads it'll be okay! 🤣🤣

Yoona

Korean cinema is whole different level I hope u watch some kdramas too.

Betsy

Good point! We are on the right path now. Poor Mim's thread last time.... 😂🤣😭

Vlad Lena

Wow… I LOVE this movie! Glad to rewatch with you)

Anya

We got so carried away! 🤦‍♀️ 🤣🤣

Betsy

We did but I enjoyed every minute of it. I was fully immersed in the topic. It was so fun. And I want to finish the movie, but it's 3:30 am here. I've been staying up so late because I love their content. However my sleep has been so bad lately haha I'm too much of a night owl. 😭😂

Anya

Omg Betsy! I'm still on Monday time here lol Yes, get some shut eye & watch later! You need rest for AIB finale lol Goodnight, sweet dreams💤💞

Betsy

Thanks girl goodnight. 😴 I can't wait for the finale!! 🥰💕

Brady

I can already see the title… “MUSICAL HATERS WATCH WICKED”

Brady

just saw they’re re-releasing this in theaters in february for its 5th anniversary

C2-H5-OH

Brig's discomfort is palpable enough to be cut by a knife. He looked like he wanted to shrink into a blackhole lmao

PST3

In Korea with high school they repeat the final year a few times until they get into university, so they can be 19 or 20 when they graduate high school.

PST3

They should watch Memories of Murder or the Wailing, two Korean movies that are very different to Western movies, making them less predictable and provide good reactions.

Poragami

so many rewatches rn lmao

Ashley K

I appreciate Carter’s takes so much bc he seems to understand the movie a lot. To add, the director explained that the rich family were also parasites in society. They don’t do anything on their own by using their money to exploit poor families with cheap labor. There was a lot of lack of translation in the subtitles but the rich family weren’t too nice either, and you can catch some of their subtle behaviors that prove that which I was glad to see Cannon catch on to some of them. Basically, everyone in this movie were “antagonists”. Even Min, he gifted the poor family a fake stone (rocks don’t float in water) and passed his job to his “friend” thinking he’d have no chance with the daughter, considering his social status. Bong Joon-ho is really a brilliant filmmaker. Oscar well deserved. Hope you check out more of his work.

inessdtl *

the son is the baseball guy in train to Busan

Cryptcat

I love Jack mentioning Initial D, it's the same thing I thought of when I saw the driving test scene

lmaooo im the ome dm them to watch alien romulus

Ron Jackson Jr

Kinda feeling Brig's aura when he's sitting in the middle woah!

Qhoa

W

Ron Jackson Jr

Brigs it's the actor from train to busan SHOHEI OHTANI

James

This was my first time watching this and while Brig was disgusted in the parasite family, I was rooting for them. 😂 I was hoping they were gonna steal their identities, cuz there was the mother, father, son and daughter in both fams. This was so good tho.

Hector

Brig's jacket 👀

Sasha

Carter vs Cannon will be legendary. It will decide if Cannon will be the new leader of the pack.

Sasha

I think McKay said that the guy is from Alice in Borderland even in Train to Busan reaction😂 McKay just circling around the right answer😂

G

No wayy

G

Why is studio gek on a crazy run rn🙏🏾👀

S0uL YgR

Who the heck hasn't watch this 😱

Frosty

i know they arent really good people but, i am surprised all the empathy is for the rich family and none for the main family... also probation doesnt sound crazy for the son and mother, they didnt really do anything super insane. also, maybe it wasnt on the nose enough, but he didnt just kill him cause he said he smelled bad LOL, nothing excuses killing the guy but cmon man are we watching the same film?

Frosty

still loved the reaction tho! and i typed that before the review at the end EDIT: ok after the review: he snapped and killed Mr Park because the entire movie theyve been disrepsecting them (poor people), smell thing being the most reoccuring example, the wife talking nonstop about how nice the rain was for their convenience, meanwhile it just ruined the main family’s whole life, but after hearing all of that throughout the whole movie, his daughter is killed in front of everyone, and not a single person cares. All of the rich and wealthy people there care only about themsevles and the parks arent even like running away from the scary guy that just stabbed someone, theyre actually just trying to get their son to the hospital and are just watching as the guy tries to kill Mr. Kim's wife and dont give a fuck about the daughter at all. instead Mr Park is yelling at Mr Kim to drive them to the hospital or to give him they keys to the Benz LOL.... they have another car too

Vlad Lena

I definitely rooted for poor family 😅 But, guys, please, Korean and Japanese people is two different nations. Why for god sake you think actor from this movie act in “Alice in Borderland”? Don’t be typical Americans 🙈

Kite

Memories of Murder when 👁️👁️

Sasha

Skipping through uncomfortable scenes is such an L move

Vanesa

I haven't but to be fair the last time I watched anything new was probably a few years ago. I just watch old shows and movies that I like.

Jessica

I haven’t seen this!! Should I watch it with you guys or watch it first and then your reaction??🤔

jrnoodles

You're half right Brig. There is an anime called Parasyte the maxim, but it's totally different to this. The anime is good too.

tomlette

It is irking me so bad. 😭 2025 gonna be a tough one for me and cinema gek I can feel it.

Sasha

4th time rewatch. Damn. Maybe some other Korean movies too on this channel.

Sasha

Talk about watching the clock while watching a movie. I think first time it ever happened to me was when seeing Killers of the Flower Moon. It was even in theater. I'm a proper hater.

Sasha

I would rate Inception 8/10 because it has a great ending and Nolan's directing and the camerawork is insane. But for me a movie like this where the tension is all around the whole time, the plot is great, pacing is great, acting is great deserves nothing else than 10/10.

bondbond53

You guys NEED to watch Oldboy!!!!!!!!!

Nico

I watched this movie in the theaters and it scared the shii out of me. Also Alice in Borderland is a Japanese series, why would a Korean actor be there 💀

Billie

SHUT! UP!

Sasha

Potato Girl stays out of my business and I stay out of hers👍

Sun

ugh this was my first watch ever and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Is it because I didn't like it or is it because that was the intention of the movie, I can't tell

Micah Seer

Sounds like you didn’t like it because of the intention😂 I can see it though

Micah Seer

GOAT TIER MOVIE!! I’m very impressed with carters review at the end. A lot of things I’ve never heard but are spot on after hearing. Loved this reaction

Johnny

The son is the baseball player with the cheerleader girlfriend from Train to Busan

Billie

no 😭 it’s more like a shocked phrase like shut the front door? I’m not even old 🥲

Sun

im a millennial and this gave me a good laugh

Billie

I’m gen z what is this 😭😭😭😭 I’m glad you laughed 🤣

Brianna Tsao

when do the Gekkies watch a Kurosawa? Or is that too old :(

Hector

Haven't finished the movie yet, sure what their doing to get hired it's unethical but it's looks like they actually doing the job they being asked

jrnoodles

Thanks! I always feel uneasy watching this movie.

Gnom

I upvote Oldboy... Silenced also good

S0uL YgR

@Ron Omg! good one! but i meant it as who out of these 5 geks had not watched it.

T

Your discussions kind of remind me of the director's oscar winning speech - "once you overcome the one inch barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films"

T

Honestly the movie made me feel really uncomfortable but I just can't not appreciate the cinematography and symbolism. That ram-don sequence especially was soo good, with the soundtrack and timing and everything.. had me so nervous

HrlIEJB

rip Lee Sun-kyun 🙏 he played the rich families father he passed away december 2023

Goat

The scene at the end is a dream, a wishful thinking never to be achieved. All the son has now to keep going is dreams. This is kind of the moral of the movie, that no matter how hard you try, it is impossible or nearly impossible to get out of the slums. The whole system is against you. There is also the theme of smell - that smell is inescapable for the Kim family, the smell of poverty that no matter how hard they try to wash off, still prevails. The movie is called parasite, because, just like the Kim family leeches off of the Park family, so does the Park family exploits the poor to their own benefit. The poor people are never human to them. The last scene demonstrates it perfectly, where the rich dad, instead of worrying about the stabbed girl, or even focusing on getting the car keys and saving his son, closes his nose in disgust from the poor guy's smell. What kind of person would be thinking about that in such a critical moment? There were also other moments that showed that disregard towards the people the Park family considers beneath them, so they were never the "good guys". I don't think we were supposed to root for any of the characters in this movie.

HrlIEJB

yeah 😢 he was falsely accused of using drugs which is smth extremely frowned upon there and ended up taking his life

Agent September 🏴‍☠️

I think I get what brig is saying, this movie is phenomenal but it makes me so uncomfortable, it will never be one of my goats because there is no emotional reward unlike shawshank or lord of the rings etc. Edit: There is literally not one single moment in it that makes me happy (still I called it phenomenal)

Vanesa

I've been mentioning I saw the devil and man from nowhere. More my style of movie than this one.

Ashley K

Silenced, I Saw the Devil, Man from Nowhere, all so good

bondbond53

Huh, I'm the opposite and that's what makes an actual great film for me. Something that is so good while making me uncomfortable

bondbond53

Don't want to be one of those people but I think you guys being American and all things considered privileged in comparison to the rest of the world explains why you side more with the rich family. This film explores the state to which late stage capitalism has gotten people. Parasite, like every Bong Joon-ho film, is about and explores class. The poorer family aren't poor for lack of effort or intelligence. The father had tried to start several different businesses, and had worked several different jobs- they all failed. The mother was a gold medal athlete. The son is said to be smarter than a lot of college students, and the sister is incredibly intelligent. Their poor living conditions were not for lack of effort. The poorer family has had to adapt to survive and without a doubt put in more work than the wealthier family. They were simply born unlucky. South Korea, like many countries including the US, has high disparity between the rich and poor. High youth unemployment rates, high prices of housing, high cost of living. Extremely high competition in terms of education, super low wages for entry level jobs- etc. As you may have seen in Squid Game, almost half of South Korea's population owes debt. And a lot of times that debt is owed to illegal firms aka loan sharks. If you owe debt to these people, the interest is insane- if you can't pay it back awful things could happen (like in Squid Games; they could make you sign away the rights to your organs) If you die, that debt is just passed on to your family members. The poorer family obviously loves each other a lot, and will do what they can to survive day to day. If that means leaching off of a careless absurdly rich family- so be it. They're forced to survive, and if they see an opportunity- they'll take it. It might not be the most moral thing but morals don't feed your kids and put a roof over your head. And keep in mind they only got so far because the rich family is so used to their comfort and wealth that they don't care OR can't even fathom somebody needing to do that. The rich family are "nice" but also so comfortable they're ignorant. The poorer family's mom says once, "if I was that rich, I'd be nice too" EDIT: Some video essays to further explore the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvO8-925Edc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgAK-4kPTb8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he3x5flTFPg

Ashley H.N

FORGOTTEN next🙏

S0uL YgR

Do you think it also has to do with the fact the rich family was actually portrayed in a "nicer" way than I think many others could be? I think it also has a lot to do with the fact they don't know how harsh the hierarchy/ in Korea is, and that's why I feel this family was actually nicer than even dramas can portray them to be 😅

Seany Park

Highly recommend I Saw The Devil which stars Lee Byung-Hun who plays Frontman in Squid Game. Also recommend The Man From Nowhere.

bondbond53

I don't think the rich family was portrayed as "nicer", they are stuck up in subtle ways that belittle people that they see as beneath them

Seany Park

That guy was NOT in Alice in Borderland lmaoooooo. These actors are Korean not Japanese.

bondbond53

Also guys, Korea was subjugated for a long while by Imperial Japan. In Asia, Japan was as horrible as Western people see Nazi Germany as. One example of the historical trauma that South Korea has with Japan is that Japan hasn't recognised fully even today the existence of comfort women which were women they subjugated as prostitutes while they occupied Korea. As such please don't equate everything to their Japanese counterpart. You might not think much of it but it just isn't in good taste. The actors from here wouldn't be in a Japanese production like Alice in Borderland and they are drinking soju and not sake.

Micah Seer

This is pretty much what Carter said in the outro? Obviously not encompassing all of that entirely but

bondbond53

Yeah absolutely Carter made excellent points. I'm talking about some of the takes of the other guys.

Ernesto Blanco

i thought there was a parasite anime movie :/

Sissy Six

Dang yet another great movie that’s been on my list forever but I hadn’t watched until now. Fantastic!

Ernesto Blanco

Yeah, this movie explores class conflicts and privileged and unprivileged perspectives well.

Didi

I mean, it's understandable to feel bad for the rich family sometimes, because what the poor family did was very bad and cannot be justified. Nonetheless, we can feel sorry for them because of the horrible conditions they lived in.

An

the repeat year typically only happens if someone fails the uni entrance exam

bondbond53

Feeling bad for the rich family is understandable. This is a complex film with complex characters but to finish this movie and side with the rich family for example is a very weird thing for me

Kite

I doubt they would, that would get like 0 views on YT sadly

El

Ponyo’s my fave ghibli film. Hope they get to watch it

ash

no it wasn't just drugs. he was also exposed for being a VIP client at a brothel. it brought a lot of shame to his wife & family which likely contributed to his decision. also there is no proof that the drug accusation was fake. he took his life before the investigation was completed.

Kite

hope the geks read those bondbond53 comments 🙏

HrlIEJB

one of the people who accused him was the manager of a brothel there was no proof to him attending one, and there are plenty of articles you can find that showed all of his tests coming back negative and there being no actual proof of it ever happening they just sentenced the person who did it

bondbond53

On a separate more positive note, considering how easy Brig learns foreign words by ear I wish to see him soon learn Korean words like hyung, oppa, noona haha

fatou ੈ✩‧₊˚

Just read that the baseball guy in train to busan is the son here, love thatt

Kite

Also kinda crazy that a comment like this is necessary, considering the film isn't subtle at all in what it tries to convey or what the message of the film is.

Amna 🍉

Please watch the kdrama weak hero class, I know ya'll will love it a lot!

Billie

I watched this years ago and interesting seeing the perspectives of people who feel sympathy for the rich people. yes what the family did was wrong, but majority of us have never been in that situation so even though its so wrong I dont know how many of us would take the moral high ground, but even if the rich father put up a good image, both him and his wife have a very snarky and subtle way of belittling others and the smell is just a part of it. I respect that bong joon ho portrayed them like this though, I just never felt sorry for them. I think if they were outright evil, there would be less conflict. I like to have positive thoughts of people and not judge, but a part of me does think that more rich people think this way – polite disgust at those 'inferior' to them economically, than outright hate. the class divide in majority of the world is horrible but he was able to show us quite plainly how crazy it is in s.korea. obvious parts being the physical environments of both families etc. – sub basement house versus house on a top of a hill surrounded by lush greenery and concrete. I think for those new to s.korean media, they may know of the country from Kpop kdrama kbeauty and skincare, cars, baseball or Samsung, but this movie did a fantastic job at showing a part of the really corrupt gov and system thats been in place for a while. everything else is just a front (like most countries we live in).

Mysterious Figure

Cannon, out with it now - does that sock with a hole in it have some emotional value or what? Its been two years man... give it up already. One of the girls on here even sent you new pair as a joke because the meme got so funny. How serious are you gonna be about this SOCK HOLE now?! And for HOW LONG?! Why are you STILL wearing the HOLE SOCK? Out with it! Tell the Patreon! 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭💀💀💀 I HONESTLY CANT WAIT TO HEAR THE EXPLANATION! 🤨🤨 (at this point it deserves its own video) OH yeah, at 2:11:59 its -THE HOLE- in all its shameless glory!

Billie

I liked how this movie was so theatrical yet had such uncomfortable almost sad moments like the family hiding under the table while the dad is talking about the poor dad's smell. it kind of snapped them back to reality, they're still their employees and theres such a hierarchy between them. one of the most viral shots is for sure the father driving the mother after the rainstorm, its just so memorable and kang ho song (the father, driver) is like a legend in korean cinema. edit: Jessica, only child, Illinois, Chicago ofc

Mia Malvik

Scared to watch this reaction because of the comments 🫣

Billie

totally agree with Carter, you pick up on so much on a rewatch!

Billie

wym? im gonna be so sleepy at work tomorrow but it was so much fun!

Billie

oh if u mean the comments about being careful with the jp/kor stuff then yeah but theres no negativity or anything. majority of people are ignorant about japan's history esp in SEA and Korea/china but I dont think its anything to worry about, just polite correction <3 its still a great reaction

Mia Malvik

I'm glad it was fun! Was not referring to your comments btw, just some of the others made me think I might get a bit annoyed with some of their takes lmaoo. There's nothing wrong with that though, we all have our different opinions but I just love this movie so much and feel strongly about some parts

Billie

ohhhhhh yeah I watched first then read. I like my parasite okay LOL but I get u x

Venus

Please watch THE WITCH

Venus

Am I the only one that doesn’t feel that bad for the rich people. Maybe it’d because I’m aware that most Korean people will never see such privileges in their entire life no matter how hard they work like a slave

Takyon

some people can't handle uncomfortable truths, especially when it directly confronts their own upbringing

Potato

Just want to point out - although you see the rich family as the "good" guys, you can see they don't love each other as much as the poor family does. In a dire moment where your son's life is in danger, why would you care about someone's bad smell? Moreover you can see the rich daughter getting neglected throughout the film. The father never calls for her, and when the son didn't eat the ram-don, the mother only offers it to her husband before taking it herself, without even considering her daughter. She even asked: “Why didn’t you ask me? I like ram-don too.” In contrast, you can see the poor family loves one another and would do anything for each other throughout the film.

Potato

Also an interesting symbolism is the ram-don itself. It represents the interplay between the three families: made from two inexpensive ingredients (symbolising the two poor family members infiltrating the home) topped with luxury beef (representing the rich family). This dish becomes a microcosm of the film’s central themes - class and the blending of two worlds.

Venus

Yep i agree. I’m from a middle class black American/East Asian family. When I go back down to the Deep South (I was born in California) or rural china and Korea the poverty is mind blowing. Only reason I don’t live like that is because my parents are in the military. Knowing how hard my family works it should not take joining the government to get out of poverty. I can not have too much sympathy for people who would not be rich without the labor of the working class

MissJodles

I’m from a working-class family in the UK so I really don’t feel bad for rich people 🤣

Luke Fox

Why is that so crazy for them to think a Korean Actor could be in a Japanese film? There are all sorts of actors from around the world that act in American movies. Its not a crazy thought at all.

MissJodles

The smell thing is so easy to dismiss as a demographic that typically doesn’t experience prejudice, too. To some it might be a passing comment that’s not that big a deal, but to people who have experienced those same comments in a racially hateful or bullying way for much of their lives due to characteristics or circumstances out of their control, it can feel impossible to ignore.

MissJodles

The graphic novel Grass is a heartbreaking but amazing comic based on the true story of a girl who was a comfort woman. I cried SO much reading it, but highly recommend it to anyone who wants to really understand the tragedy of the things women went through during that time

Luke Fox

Its precisely because this film is complex that there can be different perspectives on it. Just because a work has a certain message in mind does not mean that the audience will always agree with that message. The reason people choose sides is because people watch this with different moral structures. Clearly your moral view is flexible where you rationalize criminal behavior based on desperation. Many other people don't agree with that. Whether or not you are desperate you are still choosing to do criminal acts for your own advancement. Lets also not pretend the poor family was any more moral than the rich family. They got greedy and wanted all the rich amenities and did awful things so all of them could get employed. If they were truly doing only what they needed to get by they could have stopped with just the father being employed and maybe one other. At the end of the day the poor family was adopting the same mindset as the rich and had they gotten away with it they would have looked down on poor people too in ten years or so. Anyway I'm writing this not to put down your take of the film but you asked how other people could come to a different conclusion so here it is.

Luke Fox

Agreed its a very phenomenal movie but its not at all enjoyable. One watch was good for me. Its more of an award bait art piece than an enjoyable cinema experience.

studiogek

I do not want it on the record that we see it as good guys vs bad guys at all

Agent September 🏴‍☠️

Its definitely not supposed to be cut and dry answer about who are the good guys. We feel for the poor family because they live below the standards that any human should have to and have been subjugated by society. But the other family did not cause their hardship. The rich parents were probably sheltered their whole lives just like their kids and followed the example of their parents. They are snobby and ignorant but imo for these faults they are just as much victims of society as the poor family. None of us choose the circumstances that shape the person we become we can only control our own choices. Nobody forced them to forge documents, nobody forced them to plant evidence to ruin peoples' livelihoods, nobody forced them to MAKE OUT WITH THE UNDERAGE DAUGHTER??? Nobody forced them to straight up murder that poor old lady after already hospitzalizing her earlier. Just saying.

studiogek

Alright to make this clear, I felt like we established pretty clearly that there were nuanced views on both poor and rich perspectives through the two families throughout the movie. If that wasn’t clear then hopefully this message makes it so

Brig Andrus

If that was me I apologize! I promise it wasn’t on purpose. As someone who doesn’t speak either language it can be confusing at times. We are also watching so many shows sometimes I just get confused. We do our best to correct each other on mistakes like that because the last thing we we want to do is offend or upset anyone or be insensitive.

AnonX

Hey guys, just wanted to add here, glad to see some k-drama fans as well and thank you for letting me know that Study Group was adapted. I had no idea! Have been reading the manhwa for what, 3+ years now? (with a lot of hiatuses in between). I'll definitely check that out. You guys think that there's any hope that the boys will watch any k-dramas in the future?

bondbond53

Hey Brig, glad to see that and I'll be honest if it wasn't for the very unfortunate history between the 2 countries I wouldn't have commented much because it's understandable that you guys are unaware of a completely different culture. Sorry if my message came across as harsh but hope you guys are only more curious to learn about South Korea!

Abogaymer

And even if that wasn't the case, you guys can have whatever opinion you want. You shouldn't feel forced to hold the same opinion as the public, that's unreasonable and unappealing.

Betsy

Man I'm hoping so one day. I've been wating for them to check out K-dramas since they first began with their channel. I know especially they would absolutely love Weak Hero Class 1 as well as Study Group. There's just so many good K-dramas, it's crazy. And you're welcome, AnonX. Glad to be of help. ☺️

bondbond53

I think the guy was no saint but the Korean media did lowkey try to witch hunt him for very baseless accusations. They tried to pin similar drug accusations to G-Dragon at the same time – one of the most popular and influential K-Pop artists and leader of the group BigBang, which T.O.P (Thanos from Squid Game) was also a part of. His results came back negative and it showed how the media was trying to sensationalise these guys in a bad light. It's very very unfortunate and sad that he saw suicide as his only way out, I mean the guy had kids ffs. This also speaks a lot about the culture of shame and pride in their society, that exposed to the world in such a way was too much of a disgrace for him to live with than to try to straighten things out

bondbond53

There's this Cambridge PhD student that recently went viral on Twitter and her dissertation was about smell and in some of her Tweets she mentions Parasite as an excellent showcase of how smell is something a lot of people dismiss but which is actually ingrained in the way some things/people are perceived in society

AnonX

Thank you SO MUCH for this. I went to check the comments as soon as I was done looking exactly for this comment, and I think you laid it out perfectly. I'm glad that Carter was able to pick up on multiple points. I'm hoping that people that had a different view can read this and "expand" their views a bit more and consider different perspectives.

An

i dont think "nicer" is the word but they weren't portrayed as evil and terrible like the rich usually are in korean media. it would've been easier to hate them that way, but like you said, in this movie it was more subtle and they were ignorant and snobby rich people rather than evil people

Brianna Tsao

That’s not entirely true, or I guess I should say it’s a little more complicated. They’ve issued multiple official apologies to South Korea since the 90s, even from former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe himself. The government created an Asian Women’s Fund in 1995 where they collected private donations from Japanese feminists, scholars and working class citizens to send to the victims of South Korea, Taiwan, etc. I believe personal letters were went out to individual survivors as well. The waters have been muddied, however, because a few individual, filthy politicians (some still in power) have downplayed or even straight up said the situation was overblown (just horrible) There’s also the fact that the public education system seems to have omitted (at least from my understanding) the dark side of comfort women/their WW2 war crimes from their text books and teachings entirely which is definitely bureaucrats wanting to erase the past. There are other examples that are troubling too. Diplomatic and cultural communications need to be further addressed by Japan, perhaps with more unified transparency and more state-funded programs/money. With all that being said, the idea that Japanese and Korean artists can’t collaborate isn’t true. There are overlaps between Korean/japanese actors and actresses working in each countries productions. There are multiple Japanese people in the KPop industry and vice verse. There are huge overlaps being bridged between animators of both countries. And the game industry is probably the largest showcase of individual solidarity as South Korean developers tend to draw lot from and communicate with Japanese auteurs I only hope things can improve considering the troubling geopolitical climate the whole world is going through right now. We need stronger bonds everywhere

bondbond53

@BriannaTsao thank you for your very nuanced comment! I think my comment simplified the shared history between the countries. It's a complicated topic to discuss but of course just spreading the word about these things is very important

AnonX

Not only there are many good ones, but they are so diverse, tackling so many different things that I'm sure that they would LOVE some of them. It is something that they are not used to though, and I see many anime reaction channels that stick to anime and Western live action shows, so I'm not sure they would be willing to give it a chance, but I really hope so!

AnonX

Also, I know that this is really bold and shameless of me, but my sister has recently started her own YT channel where she reviews not only K- and J-Dramas, but also Korean and Japanese literature. It'd be lovely if you could take a look! It's called The Blossom Review: https://www.youtube.com/@TheBlossomReview/ Sorry and thanks!

AnonX

While no one actively forced them to do those specific things, it's a good opportunity to highlight and analyze the system and conditions that drove them to take those actions. Morals become less important when you live a life of misery, and when the system shuts the door on your face every single time you try to make it do without crossing the line, it's almost inevitable that people will reach a breaking point and end up taking illegal/immoral actions.

Sundays

Most people do not touch the type of wealth the rich family has, so it's very easy to empathize with the poor family in the film. Despite that, I do appreciate how the rich family are not inherently characterized as "evil" people, which could have been so easy to do. Like you guys pointed out, it was really the poorer family that were doing messed up things. But I think because nobody was truely evil, the themes of the film were that much stronger. We weren't so busy trying to blame someone, but understand the circumstances that would lead any person to make the decisions that were made. Bong joong-ho is a treasure from South Korea. His film Memories of Murder is one of my all-time favorites, and am excited for his newer film Mickey 17.

Nanashi

Oh no they don't overly love each other! They are definitely the good guys in this movie lol

Nanashi

Hating the rich is legit the same as the rich hating the poor. Hate is hate

Nanashi

As you clearly have prejudice with them because they have a different life than you, prejudice is prejudice. I really don't get how people get so into this hivemind of social prejudice that they can't even see the hypocrisy. Saying proudly that you don't feel empathy for these people isn't the good look you think it is.

Nanashi

Outrageous take. Can't believe people think like this

Nanashi

They were freaking almost massacred by parasites you complete buffoon lmao get out of your damn liberal bubble.

Nanashi

Imagine criticizing the guy holding his nose and not the freaking murderers and leaches

Potato

I don't think there's any good guys in this movie but if you do that's cool too 👍 everyone is valid to their own opinions

Nanashi

"They are nice because they are rich". What extremists don't get is that prejudice goes both ways. As the rich are seen as empty hosts for parasites to leech onto, the rich sees the poor as lesser, not outright but subtly, sometimes not even on purpose, like the wife which is defined as "simple" which rang in their head as "to be exploited. It's nuanced and why it's a good film. Choosing sides is ridiculous and goes against what the movie is, and in this time and age it's sad that people are more and more extremists than willing to see anything nuanced. Some of these comments, extremely sugarcoated, that practically scream "the rich got what was coming for them" for... being rich? For not liking the smell of poor people? The hypocrisy is insane. I'm just glad I don't close my eyes to one side and at least try to see the full picture. In war you don't curse the soldier shooting at you, you curse the life of whoever put the gun in their hand.

Nanashi

Nah Geks don't you see?! You're supposed to hate the rich and all they stand for😡!! They got what they deserved🤭. (Contains obvious sarcasm)

Nanashi

As too much money shows who you really are, as does the lack of money. Everything goes both ways

Betsy

Aww me too but that’s a valid point. And for sure, there are so many versatile shows that offer a little bit something for everyone depending on your taste of genre. But yeah you’re right giving me her link, it might not be the most appropriate thing to do on here since it’s their Patreon but I’ll have to check it out. Thanks :)

khalxeesi

So much nuance in this movie. I feel like alot of it has been covered in the comments but what I love is how they show capability is not a matter of wage class, but opportunity is. The lower class family are talented individuals, but due to their circumstances usually lack the chance to get "upstanding" work, while the mom of the upper class family is almost completely incapable but has the opportunity to source what she needs. Also a great examination of the disparity of resources, how being in a 'down and out' situation can completely change your perspective on what you must do to survive, and a perfect ending.

Anya

Hey AnonX! Yes, I feel more confident now about K-dramas being included but, winning is another story. The demand for it has grown and they're pretty good about putting show suggestions onto polls. However, like Betsy said, they won't watch it unless they choose it for themselves. I just feel like there isn't enough K-dramas lovers in this space to win. Or if it takes the lead, people will vote against it just because it'll feel like another AIB and it's not diverse enough. They'll have a hard time pleasing both sides lol Such a shame though because Kdramas have their own unique story and imo have the best life and love stories.

Betsy

Couldn't agree more. It will be a slippery slope. But I still have hope. Wish there were more fans on here. And so true, the emotional connections/strong story and characters is what drew me in. Not to mention the visual appeal is off the charts! Glad you're more confident, Anya. It would be nice if they could do a K-drama poll but like you said that's not very likely due to them already having a specific routine when it comes to the layout and structure of them. Dang it, I want them to see Weak Hero Class 1 and Study Group so bad. They would dig it especially the high energy of the action scenes and the comedy. I'm so impressed by Study Group. Hwang Minhyun plays Gamin so effortlessly. It felt like the manhwa was coming to life. 🥰

Billie

empathy is different to sympathy. I don’t feel sorry or pity them. Empathy is a feeling of understanding. It’s a normal human reaction to have understanding for those who share a closer life experience to you. Idk why you’re saying that ‘it isn’t the good look you think it is’ and sending judgement. notice how I didn’t mention the children and that I don’t feel sorry for them, because I do and I also have empathy for them. This is the life they’ve been brought up in and have kor grown up to feel sorry either. Notice how I also didn’t excuse the poor family’s actions and I actually didn’t care for them much till the rainstorm destroyed their home. as for the other family, they have a vastly different experience and are so unaware and conditions of the people who literally live in the same city as them. So yes, I don’t feel empathy for a fictional character that in a time of great distress and seeing someone get murdered is thinking about smell actually and pauses to cover his nostrils 🤣 i can’t understand that. Do I feel sympathy for their children being in danger? absolutely. But not for how they have treated the others. I also didn’t feel sympathy for the son and the mum being held responsible for their actions. if that’s a ‘bad look’ I really don’t care. It’s just a movie we can have different opinions, just enjoy it and we are allowed critical and nuanced thinking without jumping to conclusions about strangers on the internet.

Billie

ALEXIS LOL I’m on episode 40 rn..I have many thoughts esp about takumi

Billie

missjodles I highly agree with you and sometimes I even have to catch myself making comments. hygiene is, in a crazy way, political and I watched this great video on the social politics of hygiene (it was about black women) but I really enjoyed it. It’s so easy to brush off but other than those who we know the life quality of etc, we really don’t know the experience and what people have access to.

Venus

Uhh when did I say hating isn’t hate. I never said I’m not a hater. I hate people who make millions and billions off of poor people’s labor and I could have just sworn I said that lol

Lydia

That scene in the living room where they were all just watching the rain imagining how their their life would be in that house...turned into them running all the way back to their home in the basement where it was all chaos and flood was so insane to me. They went from having barely any to having nothing in the span of a night and went to work the next day bc the rich family called and had no idea. imo there weren't good guys or bad guys but the ending was especially heartbreaking. it seemed like to me that the ending was telling us that he can plan all he wants, but he wont ever be able to buy that house

Venus

I forgot to mention, y’all recognize the brother main character because he was the baseball player from train to busan. That is where you know him from. I recommend you watch his movie the witch.

Billie

I think some commented on the beginning of the post movie discussion but I think a lot understood it as well and listened till the end 🤎 all love

McKay Carter

Just saw the musical a couple months ago and it’s incredible, movie is amazing too!

Claire

I hope you guys give the kdrama "The Glory" a chance! It's a thriller-revenge drama. I'm sure you'll like it!

Zipzzty

Rats

kringlekrisp

A lot of discussion around this movie is a bit too focused on rich people bad poor people good or poor people bad rich people good. I think the movie is more an illustration of the flaws of the system as a whole. The system pits poor people against each other in this case quite literally with the hidden basement family, and whether the rich are inherently good or bad, they're destined to be ignorant of the struggles of the lower class. Also the stench is symbolic of their class- brig originally predicts the rich father is saying he smells poor, even though obviously the family might literally smell bad after the flood. The stench for the poor dad is inescapable, no matter what he ever does he'll never be able to fit in with wealthier people even though their entire family are talented and skilled. Don't hate the player hate the game.

Zipzzty

I agree with Brig It’s not Goat tier

Afra

We need the glory reaction next 😔🙏🏻

Ayaulym🇰🇿

idk I anybody commented on it, but I like how it shows the subtle influence of Western culture, specifically English language. Due to globalisation and colonisation in many nations, you can show your status by speaking English, or any other "privileged" language. It might be funny how they stick English words into sentences randomly but it's kinda sad too that this language/Western culture is the current standard of the upper class. You can see why the family constantly talks about American cities and changes their names to Jessica or Kevin. Because being American is a privilege in a way. Everything is Americanised and the closer you are the higher you feel the status hierarchy. We have the same thing with English and Russian in my country. To a point where you might get belittled for speaking those languages worse than our native Kazakh.

Grady

Y’all should react to shutter island. All time movie with insane writing

lololol

watch the prestige TRUST

Didi

First of all, I apologize for my English, as it is not my first language; and I hope I don't sound rude, this is just my opinion okay:). I think that some people (NOT EVERYONE) like to say that others don't recognize their position of privilege, otherwise they wouldn't have empathy for the rich family in this film. Some people like to feel that they know more than others or that they care more about certain problems. A moderate and realistic position is to recognize that, in fact, the conditions in which the poor family has always lived are horrible and as they said in the video, it's normal that when the family experiences even, for a few minutes, a life of “luxury”, they get so excited that they don't even think rationally. And that's why people empathize with them. But on the other hand, it's completely normal to have sympathy for the rich family, because no one would want to see their home, their things turned upside down, destroyed by people they trusted enough to employ. No one, rich or poor, would want to go through the cruel things that the rich family went through because of the poor family's actions. Look, the rich family is not perfect either. But this why we like your videos, keep being honest:) Again, this is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right😭dont come after me hahahah

Stairguy

I don’t understand why Brig was SO upset about the poor family before everything went sideways. Sure, they were not good people and were scamming them to an extent. But they weren’t THAT bad 😂 Some innocent people lost their jobs was the worst that had happened so far. But he looked personally attacked or something hahaha

Rosa

lmao the reaction to that uhh.. spicy living room scene was hilarious. my first and only time watching this movie happened when my parents invited me to watch it for the first time with them... none of us knew. the moment that scene started i hid and got laughed at cos i felt like i needed to die afterwards if i kept my eyes on the screen, so this was actually my first time too seeing that in full instead of... hearing it...

Lydia

this. everything they were hoping for was sadly just a dream. and their plan to "take over" was never going to be successful because of the system. in that drive scene after the flood, that was sooo sad to me. the rich family is completely oblivious to what is happening beneath them

Lydia

Also i love the scene where we find out that everytime the dad came home it was the man in the basement doing the lights for him. it just shows there are privileges the rich family doesn't even know they have that are only because of the labor of someone below their class.

Imane

I hope you guys react to the glory it's a kdrama

Camille Makoa

Mckayyyy I heard you say Kdramas! Which oneeee

Sofia

I hope they react to the glory THEY HAVE TO OMG

S0uL YgR

Yea saw that after my comment but I was like 🤷🏻‍♀️

Kaydee

uhm, bc like u said, they were not good people and bc of them, 2 innocent people lost their jobs. plus, the rich family were pretty lenient to them and the poor son even had the audacity to take advantage of the rich teenage daughter. lol

Kaydee

i already know theyll fw that show a lot, its so good even if you dont like kdramas in general

khalxeesi

There seems to be a bit of a dissonant view on the grind mindset when it is in a place of privilege vs when its for survival.

Aliya

Just because they "weren’t that bad" doesn’t make what they did right. Laws exist for a reason. Many commit crimes out of poverty—it’s understandable, but not justifiable

Aliya

Let's watch The Glory , it's just 16 episodes in total

chloe s.

exactly this! and i think this is one of the the major points of the film

Stairguy

No. Absolutely does not justify being ok with someones death. And I understand laws, please do not talk down to me. Except for the sister's job, which involved impersonation, exactly what did they do that was against the law? It was dirty pool but what law was broken if that's your argument? And to be more clear then, when I say went sideways I specifically mean when they started partying in their house while the family went camping.

khalxeesi

Also how even though the specific actions of the rich may not be hostile towards folks in poverty they know personally, the gentle dehumanization and profit building comes to an expense of the lower class, so the dad's final actions are less of a hatred to the dad and more a result of systemic oppression between theyre classes.

S Moonchild

The fact that basement under basement of Rich People have normal toilet and a house of Poor People have their toilet up the stairs is very telling. They live even below the sewer lines. Mr Park being disgusted of their smell is a metaphor that whatever you do, rich folk will find a way to separate lower classes from themselves. Mr Kim was just fed up with everything, his daughter is dying from a fatal injury, his wife is fighting a homeless man with a huge knife and all the rich people are thinking is about themselves and their child. They didn't even try to help or at least try to take Jessica to hospital. Chaos is unraveling and he is asking for the keys and then has time to make a face because of the smell. Like dude, is the smell the worst part of the day? You can take the keys and try to save your child and your child' tutor bleeding on the grass. Also the stone Min gifted was fake, it is empty inside. Meaning its luck for wealth is fake, but also hitting someone with that won't kill them instantly. It is also why the stone was floating during the rain, air inside. Notice how every interaction between rich and poor, where they are in the same frame, they are separated by some lines, window line, furniture or something.

S Moonchild

same in Azerbaijan, knowing English or Russian makes you cool. But recently I noticed how Russian language started losing its popularity here.

Julio cruz

I hadn't seen this movie until now, but I always thought it was about some creatures taking over people's bodies lol.

Kelsey

there is an anime (and live action show/movie adaptation) called "Parasyte" that has this plot so that makes sense

NMP

MEMORIES OF MURDER. Same director as this movie, murder mystery thrilelr

Frosty

was hoping this was the first step into moving into some critically acclaimed movies that aren't "a series", theres so many that arent in imdb top 100 that are classics or modern classics

Kaydee

dude, did you watch the movie? they broke laws left and right. the son and daughter falsified their documents and scammed the rich family. the son sexually took advantage of the rich daughter while being her tutor. the family intentionally triggered the housekeeeper's allergies multiple times. they trespassed in the house while it was empty. yes, poor people are often in survival mode, but committing crimes that affect other innocent people are still crimes, whether or not you are just doing it for your own survival.

chloe s.

if you're ever interested in watching more foreign films, i suggest these: Monster directed by Kore-eda (Japanese) Pan's Labyrinth directed by Del Toro (Spanish) Oldboy directed by Chan-wook (Korean)

blabber90

@Luke Fox Well the Korean/Japanese productions operates differently than the US. It’s rare for a Korean actor to appear in a Japanese production and vice versa. But as of lately it started to change however it’s still uncommon.

mako_

Heya, living in Dubai here, WhatsApp is in fact not banned here, its actually the number 1 most used chatting app from casual talks to getting jobs. Might've gotten confused with VoIP apps like Discord, Skype, etc, which are all hurdles to use. EITHERWAY FIRE WATCH!!!!!

kiiturii

dude. Hands down the most stressful movie I've ever watched. What an insane ride.

kiiturii

they weren't just "not good people" they were terrible people lol. I don't think it's just what they did, but how they acted while doing it. The disrespect they had toward the family, calling them gullible, making fun of them, all while having a party under their roof, drinking their drinks and eating their food, it's just insane lol

HikiFan

I see some good recommendations for foreign films in the chat! My K-drama recommendations for next time: The Glory D.P. All of us are dead (s2 coming) Death game

studiogek

What I heard from people living there is that calls over WhatsApp and Instagram even are banned, but they can text on WhatsApp. Is that right?

Welch

i've heard such good things about this movie so its about time i watched it for the first time too!

Matt Haloostock

I never noticed the lines separating the rich and the poor before. That's insane! This movie has so much detail, and has me on the edge of my seat half the time. It is masterpiece to me.

Matt Haloostock

I love the Park's house. I would kill to have it.... Jk jk

maria.buenrostro200

You guys need to watch The Glory kdrama 🙏🙏

Owen

please watch The Glory. it's Kdrama

Chalène

Joining my comrades in the comments. You guys need to watch the k-drama The Glory. Trust us. I'll do The Glory my battle for the geeks this year anyway.

Keeka 🍰

Hi, I'm from Dubai and you are right. Its the most popular chatting app here. We don't make calls with it but we can text. Delivery guys use the WhatsApp calls just to get us to read the messages they send XD
