If they continue in subs, it'll be the first time I watch it in Japanese. Which is weird cuz I generally prefer subs. It's probably cuz Death Note was my first anime I watched in continuity. That and FMA are pretty much the only ones I watch in English.

I will say , the dub for this anime is so good and alot of people prefer it. You might want to give the next episode a shot in dub before you get too deep into the series. Just in case you end up finding you actually prefer the dub to this show.

Wow I’m realising how odd the Sub ver. sounds to me, because I’m so used to the English voices. My first experience with Death Note was Sub, but I’ve seen it way more in Dub. Mainly because the Dub was more accessible (back when you could watch anime episodes in three parts on YouTube; when copyright was more lax 😥). I can’t believe I’m saying this (because Miyano Mamoru supremacy), but I think I prefer the Dub slightly more. Especially for a certain character that has to be introduced.

i'm not against dub, but not being a native english-speaker i always naturally gravitated towards sub versions since i'm pretty used to it, but i just find it wild how so many are disappointed about them not choosing dub. I mean both are equally good it all depends on what you got used to, yes it's weird watching the other version but damn, aren't you here for their reactions? It's not you watching the show, you're ultimately here to see what they think, even though rewatching the thing with them is inevitable. Edit: i would like to add that what takes a lot from the general quality of the dub is the butchered Japanese when it comes to names. It's a show set in Japan made by a Japanese production team, the cultural background is also Japanese, for multiple reasons the original language is the most fitting, like in the case of any show. They are generally more carefully curated, work together with the author often, hence the whole product is closer to the source material. I find that it's just a very anglo-centric view of the entire thing. I get that the guys are American and the English might make it easier to pick up on stuff, but the "dub being better" is not the objective truth, but the view of the western fandom, who obviously prefer the language they speak. Another aspect is that people generally like the dub because of it's understandability while not taking anything away from the oriignal, but I think the Japanese version just does a better job conveying feeling.

As a European the butchered pronunciation of Japanese names, and English speaking characters in Japan really doesn’t do it for me. It’s the same when I watch a US show or movie, and they visit Germany where everybody somehow talks English. It kills my immersion. I think US cinema is partly responsible for people in English speaking countries not picking up on the absurdity of it. Generally me and people in my surroundings watch stuff in their native language. If possible I use the audio of where the show takes place if its dubbed well. FYI Germany is also very guilty of dubbing literally everything. Even news interviews…

I think the dub recommenders would also agree for you guys to try the dubbed early so that you don't develop that voice association bias and can actually get a feel for how the characters sound in their respective languages

I've never watched this show subbed so its kind of exciting its like watching it for the first time again but I'm realizing for some reason they kind of leave out some info in the sub or maybe its the opposite and they just add key info in the dub to help non japanese speakers out. Like I remember them explaining things like how "Shinigami" means "God of Death" in the dubbed version and how for his second kill in the parking lot, there's so many names written because its the same name he's attempted to rewrite multiple times to make sure he got the spelling correct.

It's subjective how you get the most enjoyment out of a show. I never watch anything in my first language, no matter how good the dub is (i don't even use sub with my language but that's another question). Just because their first language is English it doesn't mean they can't follow what's happening unless they hear it. Maybe it's just me, i can't generalize and say the guys must be like this too, but personally i'm weirded out by any kind of dub of any anime, it just doesn't feel natural – even with Death Note where I know people like tend to like it. So my point if that it was really their decision and I get that people were curious, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference that might not align with what the audience wants.

i can't speak for luffy, i'm assumming you're a native english speaker, but it's a common occurence people not liking to consume stuff in their own language if they speak English well enough. So many things get lost in translation and it ends up sounding cringy, which I am personally very sensitive about since I understand the nuances of my own language very well, I know when something sounds off despite being dramatically correct. With English i don't notice it since my brain does not operate in it – especially when the dub is in a language i don't understand at all so I don't know whether the translation is correct or not.

i've been recommending Monster for forever, but now i'm starting to worry whether the slower pace would bother them. I watched it with my brother and I literally had to beg him not to drop it (he got hooked after a while too, but damn) – but I think it's suspenseful atmosphere might encourage them to keep watching since it's indeed a very high-quality show. I grew up in a Japanese household and started watching anime when they didn’t even have dubs and I agree that watching anime in subs is a different experience culturally speaking since Japanese people have different ways of interacting with each other, different style of humor, different kind of creativity, etc. My brain notices a totally different viewing experience when watching anime in dub which seems weird to me. I am a life long Trekkie, and it’s like if I watched Star Trek with Japanese voice actors, it would seem very awkward for me. Having said that though, everyone has their own preferences and whether people watch anime in sub or dubs is not a big deal for me.

I'm excited that the geks are finally watching Death Note. Most of us stop in the same episode, just like Brigs. I'm rewatching it again since I'm writing a paper on Light Yagami. And now I can see their reactions to the show. I love how Mckay is already a fan of Light. I was surprised to see Cannon almost smiling 2 mins into the anime. Okay, personally I will just about always prefer the sub, especially for current shows, and I do generally agree with what you're saying with regard to conveying the original intent of the creator in the original language and the ability of the Japanese VAs to do that best. However, there are some shows that have such a good dub that in my opinion you are simply depriving yourself of a more full and rewarding first experience by defaulting to the sub. Two of the greatest instances of this for me, would be Steins;Gate and Death Note. Also, while I will respect your opinion, I do find it baffling to not prefer the sub any time Erwin is on screen given the subtly and intricacy of his character. But you do you.

no they obviously dont like dub. although the quality is slightly better for deathnote doesnt mean its better than sub. they just dont like the way dub sounds and it'll just ruin the experience
