from a youtube comment but i really like this explanation of what the priest is saying "He's talking about complete unbaised love, he's saying that the love humans think we feel isn't the real love, he was right to say that what the brothers felt wasn't love by it's pure definition, he said death was love because in that stage you don't feel negative emotions or desires, he wasn't saying to praise death or that all people should die, that wasn't really the vibe that he was giving off, especially when you take into account that he took interest in thors words when he heard them from the other Vikings, he's saying that by the definition of pure unbiased love that death is the closest we as humans can get, nobody is saying praise death, you can live and be happy but what he's saying is that humans aren't capable of unbiased love, it's just something we can't do"

The priest's words of love of the purest Christian love, undiscriminating, "agape" love. Willibald (the priest), and Canute later realizes in this episode, is saying that such love is unattainable for humans in their lives. When they say there is no love, they mean there is no universal, "agape" love, undiscriminating even for your enemies. This goes onto the meaning that in death, a human embodies this love far better than in life, as only then can they be truly selfless in how they give and "love" to all of nature, even the beasts that feed off their flesh. Hope this can help to show why that ending moment is so powerful. The vikings, post-Roman empire western Europe, pride themselves in violence. Canute, realizing that because God took away our ability to experience "agape" love in life, (because of original sin) will no longer seek his father's (both God and his actual father) salvation and instead lead these vikings to build a "paradise' on earth. tldr he said fuck u god lets square up

The world, the nature, the Creation of God is Love because it doesn't pass judgement and its the same for everyone. it doesn't discriminate one from the other. The true embodiment of love that Jesus Christ preached on the cross was the indiscriminate love towards all human beings. The good and the bad. Its on the Bible. He forgave all and accepted all equally in heaven. But because human nature is to sin (the apple), we are simply incapable of doing what Jesus told us. We love our mother because its ours, but we dont love every other mother in the world in the exact same way that we love ours. We would save OUR mother in detriment of other mothers because its OURS... and that is being discriminate towards our mom. Discrimination is the act of treating someone different or giving special treatment, for good or for bad, which is the exact opposite of what Jesus told us to do. we cant be biased towards our own interest. But us humans cant possibly do that, and thats why we will never be able to deserve paradise or heaven, and thats why Canute decided to create a world where love is possible. A paradise on earth that wouldn't demand the trials that God pose upon us Humans. True love is INdiscriminate. focused love is actually discrimination. Carter gets it. Thors achieved perfection the moment he died. "death perfects a person". Thors could have killed Askellad and his man easily and saved his kid, he chose to die in order to not kill Askellad. He DIDNT choose his kid over some strangers. HE CHOSE BOTH. so he gave his life to indiscriminately save Thorfinn and Askellad. He wasn't biased. Thats why he is the True Warrior. He became perfect the second he died

My trouble with the show stemmed from this episode. While the story is fictional, many of the characters and backgrounds were based on real history, therefore it was sometimes hard to tell when I could infer things and when I had to rework my thoughts with the added fictions. I’ve grown up with Catholic theology and history my entire life, and while aspects have evolved with time, some points of philosophy have been fairly consistent. Canute saying that one has to be in a state of perfected love (agape) (which also seems to be misconstrued, as it doesn’t demand one to love everyone the same or indifference, but that one must will the good of another without mind to self) in order to reach “paradise” isn’t exactly correct. In my mind, it seems like there was a possible mixing of eastern and western theology/philosophy because the idea of having to die in this state of “balanced love, which does not favor one over another” and having to reach that in this life sounds similar to Taoism and even Buddhist enlightenment. The Catholic side of things (which is what I believe they are trying to portray here) is about dying in a state of grace, not perfection, with there being a purification process that occurs at some point after death, known as purgatory. The two great commandments rather sum it up with “Love your God above all things, and love thy neighbor as thyself”. I could go on, but I think this is already a bit much 😆 In conclusion: I would take this dialogue as something fictional and not try too seriously to fit it in with Christian theology

"True love" is indiscriminate love (loving everyone; not just those important to you). When you're alive, it's hard not to be biased towards love. In death, you have no emotions so you can't discriminate. A "true warrior" is someone who shows mercy or indiscriminate love, that's why Thors died the way he did and achieved perfection. This episode is deep compared to the last one where the energy is more hype! Which one did you guys like more? I enjoyed both equally

I love how the battle between Thorfinn and Thorkell serves as a tangible illustration supporting the conversation between Canute and Willibald, almost like a portrayal or a microcosm of the world of mankind. An earth without love, filled with meaningless fighting, and a sense of melancholy knowing that the only thing keeping these characters from sharing their love with one another is the harsh reality of the circumstances that they live in. I love the creative direction they took in this episode and it only keeps getting better from here. Y'all are in for a treat!

If anything for them it is probably good to know early because they love the action and, as a prologue usually does, there is a fat shift in pacing in s2 and so they might give it more of a chance in that regard but idk

If you actually got to see Carter talking about his world views in these reactions you would know he tends to show more maturity and thoughtfulness than the average person.

The description of love in this episode is so simple that it has been going over people's heads because of how simple it is. It has been repeated since the concept of God in the Bible was first introduced. God = Love - God loves everyone the same. We are all his children. All of Creation God loves equally. Obviously, most humans don't know how to live life loving everything around us equally. This is why we can't have nice things, because we TAKE, KILL etc. from everyone and everything around us. Because otherwise we would DIE? Yes. Jesus died too. For this reason. To give himself even for those that "didn't deserve it" according to human standards. God loves everyone EQUALLY. Even those that want to kill him. This is why our world is not perfect. Because we don't know how to love like this. If we did, then this world would ACTUALLY be Paradise. I don't even believe in God but this concept can be understood even if you aren't religious and you can still live life trying to strive for it. It makes the world a better place no matter if you believe in God or not.

What he means is that conscious humans cannot love because they can choose, and hence that choice discriminated one choice consciously above all other possible choices. The priests perspective is that unless it is to all indiscriminately it isn’t love, but rather discriminate affection/care. The reason for the symbolism to Adam and Eve is to drive the point home about consciousness, as the eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is the point upon which humans became conscious. This is signified most obviously by how Adam and Eve felt shame for being naked upon eating the fruit. They are now conscious. To be conscious is to know good and evil. The point is that the unconscious doesn’t choose, but just is, and therefore that’s love. I find it interesting but deeply incorrect as a philosophical perspective personally, but that’s the idea.

I think some experiences are so drastic that they change people forever. Notice that Canute is timid, he is not foolish. In fact he is highly intelligent, and he has been raised to be in command. It is just he does not feel comfortable doing so as that is not his nature , and Ragnar defended him always. Having lost his one and only anchor in life and looking at the situation around him, I’m not surprised at his anger at all!

Wanted to share this reddit comment I came across lol that I thought best explains what the priest meant: “Well in a literal sense, discrimination is when there's a big gap between how you treat the people you like and don't like. Can people treat others equally regardless of their feelings towards them? You see, when people say they love someone more than anybody else, whether it be parental, or romantic love then it's in turn unfair for the others as you're treating the one you seem to claim you "love" More tenderly just because of your own personal feelings for them. It's an inherently selfish act, hence discrimination. Having the capabilities to treat everything in the world equally is the type of love that the priest sought for and to understand this Canute uses the snow, the weather, the sun and all these inanimate objects as metaphors in an attempt to grasp the priest's words. The sun shines on the wicked as much as it does for the good, the rain pours for the righteous and the unrighteousness indiscriminately, thors having every justification to kill askeladd and his men but he doesn't because he seemingly valued the life of others as much as he valued his own son are all acts of true unconditional love that the priest was searching for. So yeah, I hope this was somewhat clear as I'm generally faded on this kinda day.”
