Episode 22 is rated as a 9.7 on IMDb, but the episode everyone is talking about is episode 23 which is also a 9.7. I have seen a handful of other reaction channels calling Vinland Saga the "anime of the year" after seeing episode 23.

omg Brigs I loved when you connected Canute's action in this episode to what he said in season 1 "I shall give meaning to your battles.To your life and death. That's what the duty of a king is." it basically comes down to making sacrifices(through war/death) to build peace which is very ironic imo I also LOVE the moral debates that occur in masterful shows like aot, vinland saga and death note!

Well I thought the episode from what I’ve seen everyone talks about highly is this one due to the iconic “I have no enemies scene” so it was like the goated episode. But next episode also is another great and the more beautiful episode. Both episodes used to be 9.8 which they need to get back to lol

I love these moral conundrums in VS, and kudos to you for calling back conversations from season 1. The way I see it - Canute wants to stop random violence by being the king and having the sole monopoly on violence. He says in S1E18, "I will give meaning to your battles, I will tell you when to fight", etc. He wants to unite the Vikings under him so that they follow his command and do not commit raids and violent acts randomly of their own free will. They will only go to war if Canute commands them, and he intends to go to war as a last resort, having given his 'enemies' ample time to reconsider and surrender. He also wants to put a stop to pillaging during war, which he can do only when he is the commander of the armies and Vikings under him. We as the audience know that he wants to requisition the farm to finance the Danish army in England, but Thorfinn and Einar don't. From their perspective, either he is punishing Ketil for Olmar's actions, or he just wants to take over the farm, which is why Einar calls him a thief and asks him to create a farm of his own instead of stealing what is essentially others hard work. Thorfinn really has nothing to leverage against Canute's arguments, because he really does not know the true reason for Canute's actions. And Canute does not want to back down, for the sake of his kingdom depends on acquiring this productive asset (farm), for which he even came himself to requisition the farm. Seeing it play out in the next two episodes will be interesting.

Also super cool how the whole waves scene is based off an actual event with the king Canute is in reference to! “When he was at the height of his ascendancy, he ordered his chair to be placed on the sea-shore as the tide was coming in. Then he said to the rising tide, "You are subject to me, as the land on which I am sitting is mine, and no one has resisted my overlordship with impunity. Before Olmar's character gets overlooked, we see that his character development has turn him into someone who is able to face fear. While most people will see Olmar's decision to surrender as cowardly, it takes someone with courage to go against the norms especially in a time period when fighting is considered a necessity and an honor. I am glad you guys are having this discussion on whether peace can truly be achievable through non-violent means, or with more fighting. This is a philosophical debate to considered when watching future seasons of Vinland Saga..

it's unfortunate but something lags for everyone, there were complaints about streamable, then dropbox and there have always been complaints for the embedded ones too, I guess the only solution would be to upload to multiple places but that sounds like a pain in the ass lol

I believe the reason they didn't recognize Thors's name was because those were the King's guardsmen and not Jomsvikings (There were some Jomsvikings in the background.) Most of them were resting in their camps after the battle during Thorfinn and Canute's discussion

Episode 22 is one of my all time favourite episodes of any show, Thorfinn is literally the goat. You do not just withstand 100 punches for no reason, he finally is a true warrior.

It would depend on how you would judge something to be "anime of the year," but things that I usually look for in an anime (or any show/movie for that matter) include complex themes, character development or multi-dimensional characters, "showing and not telling" the story, and well-constructed writing. This is why I don't watch 95% of shows and movies out there, but Vinland Saga has definitely restored my faith in story-writing.

Yeah, those are the things I look for as well and I think Vinland does it perfectly. Another thing which I think is important in anime especially is daring to show the 'boring' parts of a story. I have so much respect for writers who do that, because you just know they care more about writing a good story than satisfying the audience in general with baseless 'hype'. That being said, I love a lot of anime and I don't hold all of them to that standard because I enjoy the fun and careless vibes too

@Poragami there’s actually no way you think any of those anime’s have better story telling, unpredictability and character development than Vinland. There’s no anime this year that even compares to Vinland in those aspects. If Vinland doesn’t win anime of the year, it’s literally because “Anime of the year” is a popularity contest and as we already know, VS doesn’t have nearly as many fans as the rest. Y’all are stuck on comparing this season with the last but S2 as it stands is a masterpiece in its own right.

The camera is at an angle so you cant really tell but its exactly in the middle of us. Must be in the DNA because mckays voice is really quiet too so if we move it closer to jack we might lose mckay. I just need to remind jack for the millionth time to speak louder but he says that most of the time hes just "saying it for himself" whatever the f that means😂

The majority of the anime fan base is heavy HEAVY into mind numbing over the top action sequences over anything of substance. I want Vinland Saga to win so bad, it's one of the best show's I've watched, not animes, shows, it is one of the best, but I doubt it will win considering the competition this year and the type of audience it appeals to.

Fun fact - the line from Canute about stopping the waves is an actual line from the real-life Canute the Great. The context was completely different, but the point remains roughly the same - to say that even though he was the most powerful man in the region at the time, his might still paled compared to that of God. As a Dane, knowing this famous line beforehand made that moment pretty sick ngl, though I totally get why it would confuse the heck out of you or seem kinda random lmao Vinland Saga generally has a lot of historical facts right, especially in terms of how the culture is portrayed (I'm mostly referring to general stuff and not so much what the historical characters said or did). Makoto Yukimura deserves praise not only for his incredible storytelling and art, but also his extensive research into viking culture
