Really don't want to ruin anyone's fun but I gotta be honest, I don't think you should bother with Korra. I see a lot of ppl recommending it and I don't want to ruin the show for anyone or insult people who do like it, but I really don't think yall would. I'm not gonna rant about my problems with it or really even care if you do watch it, and for those who like it that's honestly great, but with everyone suggesting it I wanted to provide the counter is all, hopefully I'm not alone lmao. There are so many things I can list about how a Zuko and Katara endgame would’ve been perfection. Like how they are definition of harmony (fire and water) and how Aang’s first heartbreak could’ve played a major role in building the maturity he would’ve needed to face the fire lord. Especially since Zuko, the person who took his girl, would be teaching him. But I digress. I hope you all watch Korra! So many of your questions are answered in that show

its important to remember that azula is still stronger than zuko, she was just not in the right mental state during the fight. so even though it seems like they were equal or zuko even a little stronger, its because of her being at her lowest. Im still surprised that she could lightning bend in that state tho

So ever since it aired I think the finale is infamous for the big deus ex machina moments (namely the Lion Turtle, energybending and a rock solving Aang's chakra problems), but overall still a top tier ending and amazing finale.

It’s important noting that kataras hesitation isn’t because she’s unsure of her feelings towards Aang. We see her come to the conclusion that Aang is a potential love interest for her after the fortune teller episodes so she has had thoughts about Aang in a romantic sense while their friendship developed throughout the show- and what is love if not the purest form of companionship? What really was stopping katara from progressing was because the person that she loved most died and left her all alone. Katara had to consider the very real possibility that Aang could very well not come back from his battle with Ozai, albeit it was most likely unconsciously, and so as a defense mechanism she created that mental distance to allow her to come to terms with these feelings of potential great loss and fear. When Aang proves, by winning the battle with Ozai, that he’s gonna be sticking around and can hold his own, it reinforces katara to be strong enough to abandon her fears and go for her love :))) hope that made sense!! Gonna miss these reactions so much !!! PLZZZ watch Korra to fill the void

No matter how many times I see Zuko and Iroh hug scene I always cry. I feel the same when Aang learns to stay true to himself and learns to bend spiritual energy... this to me symbolizes exactly what the meaning of what the Avatar is or should be to the World - a will so inspiring in a single person that it can inspire a change in the whole World.

Iroh/Zuko reunion always makes me cry too, Addie. Partly because we've been waiting so long for it, esp as Zuko has evolved and become what his uncle always wanted him to be (his own man with his earned honor). But also think of the LAST time Zuko disappointed/disrespected a father figure. He literally got burned in the face and shunned/exiled. Zuko was so nervous to see Iroh again probably because he expected Iroh to be so angry with him, like Ozai was. So it just hits 10000000x harder when Iroh shows him LOVE and FORGIVENESS despite what happened between them. That's what real love is and what a true father does for his son 😭

I told myself I wouldn't cry at the zuko iroh reunion again but I just couldn't help it as soon as Iroh looked over his shoulder at zuko the floodgates opened I don't think anything gets me as emotional as that scene even though I've seen it so many times now

In the books Toph and Bumi have a friendly match to see who is a stronger earth bender and it ends up as a tie! Its insane how Toph is so strong for such a young age too, Bumi is 112 years old and a white lotus member and he still only tied with Toph! Really goes to show that she probably is the most talented bender in the entire ATLA universe along with Azula.

I hope you guys get around to watching The Legend of Korra eventually. I'm definitely in the small minority with this take but I've grown to like it more than ATLA. I think the more mature themes/tone are what do it for me, along with more rewatchability (Book 1 of ATLA can be a bit of a slog to get through on a rewatch). Nevertheless I'm looking forward to the ATLA live action and your guys' reactions to it.

I agree. Korra isn't the worst show, but it really fell flat compared to ATLA imo. They had a lot of interesting characters and themes, the potential was there, but the execution was not. Also doesn't help that the production of Korra was such as a mess with uncertainty

I don't really think it's all that much more mature than ATLA. The love triangles and romance were a mess and handled worse than ATLA. Plenty of pretty immature jokes in there too, ex. fart jokes. It's edgier sure, but it's not what I would really want from a more mature or darker version of the Avatar universe. Granted, that kind of show wouldn't really be possible as a Nick show.

@stevetheiguana that’s why I’m not harsh on LoK anymore. It simply wasn’t executed well. I think if it was, it would definitely be better than atla IMO. LoK truly has some amazing moments I think everyone should at least watch after diving into the Avatar universe

I think the structure of LOK just lends for easier rewatches. Unlike ATLA which is 1 story for ~50 episodes, LOK is essentially 4 separate 12-14 episode short stories (especially the first 2 seasons because the writers didn't know they'd get more seasons). That's why in ATLA there are some 'filler' episodes and more childish antics sprinkled throughout, while every episode of LOK is integral to the story. When I rewatch ATLA, I always skip stuff (especially in Book 1), which I've rarely done for LOK. And I didn't mind the love triangle tbh, it was pretty realistic and I feel like its presence is overstated by critics of it. I'd probably rank the books something like this: Korra 3 > ATLA 2 > ATLA 3 >= Korra 1 > Korra 4 > ATLA 1 > Korra 2

I don’t think ATLA 2 over 3 is that controversial; the Deus Ex Machinas in the final fight (pointy rock and lion turtle) def play a role. As for Korra Book 3, I’m surprised you think it’s atrocious. I thought it was fantastic and the way they explored its effects in season 4 elevated it further.

Oh okay I tried to reframe from outright saying it's bad before but since you asked honestly, the personal dramas are more contrived and immature than ATLA, and there are so many holes in the writing that are more than nitpicks, like real problems with the plot and how events flow in the story. There's a channel on YT "Overanalyzing" that breaks down episodes and gives better examples than I could get into in a comment without being an essay, and without any political bs, if you want specifics.

HOT TAKE: If ATLA is a 9/10, Korra is maybe a 5/10, save for a few scenes that I’d rank higher. I think Korra is nowhere near the quality of storytelling that ATLA is, and I’d be really curious to see this crew’s reaction to it. Hope you guys do a Korra series-watch too! What ATLA *nailed* so well was CHARACTER. The thing I liked most about Korra is simply seeing more world-building, learning where Team Avatar ended up, and what they accomplished in their lives after the events of TLA. In other words, my favorite parts of Korra had nothing to do with her or those characters - I just wanted more Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph. I want to see AVATAR AANG, at full power, as an adult (we only get glimpses in flashbacks). I want to see them all grow into adults, develop their bending more, how they influenced the world, and see them “retire” from hero-work and start families as they enjoy some well-earned rest. That crew of characters is just so well-written that I want more, despite the ATLA series having a near-perfect ending.

Korra had great potential with plenty of the characters, including villains, but didn't live up to it. The core cast of team avatar in ATLA is really what made the show what it was. The new team avatar in Korra rarely has everyone together in comparison, and failed to develop them as much as they could have. I also don't find them as likable as the original cast either, and Korra in particular is obnoxious. I won't get into other specifics, as it would get into spoiler territory, but some of my biggest gripes with Korra is how much they retconned and messed with bending. Republic City was a mess as well and didn't fit in the Avatar universe and was literally just there because the writers liked 1920s NYC aesthetic so they shoehorned NYC into it.

Wow I could not agree more, especially about the missed potential of the characters, and the fact they are rarely all together. I also didn’t like Republic City - thought it was a cool concept, but it’s almost antithetical to what the world of ATLA was. It’s too technologically advanced, and I agree that there was always something that didn’t feel right about it existing in the Avatar universe. Doesn’t fit. Another issue I had is I think the show reveals too much about big elements of the world of ATLA. I liked the mystery about bending & the existence of the Avatar, I really didn’t like that they did an origin story but relegated it to flashbacks only. Those are FOUNDATIONAL concepts for this IP, so they either need an entire series to explore, or just leave it a mystery & focus on the current characters. Sequels always seem to jump too far ahead. The creators had the golden ticket - the audience fell in love with Team Aang, so why not just continue that story? They could have just brought the comics to animation. I’d be down to see an Azula redemption arc, etc. I also agree 100% that Korra, as a character, is just… annoying, to be frank. And the other members of Team Korra are almost simply worse versions of the OG squad. As you said perfectly, TLOK had a ton of potential, but didn’t live up to much of it. However, I still have very high hopes for the new stuff Avatar Studios is working on - I believe we’re getting a Kyoshi series next (?), very exited for that!!! What are your thoughts?

Korra is superior on all levels. BETTER villains. BETTER main character development. BETTER writing. The only thing it lacked was better supporting cast. This comment reeks of fanboy nostalgia. ATLA is a 8/10 and LOK is a 9/10. Also the sequel isnt about the continuation of the Aang. He already had his story. It's for korra. Two different titles. Yall literally only watch these sequels so you can fangirl over the last cast. It also seems you lack historical context or knowledge with your claim that Republic City is too advanced. It only takes about 80-100 years for something like that to develop. There's proof of this with the USA, Korea, and China if you want to look at how they were 100 years ago. Also if you find Korra annoying but you actually sat there and enjoyed watching Aang whine all day like a toddler, I'm going to once again sum this up to either nostalgia or misogyny. Also the supporting cast is nothing like the original cast so idk how their worse versions. If anything their personality types match their bending, and that's it.

ATLA is more consistently good but Korra has higher highs and lower lows. Book 1 and 3 of Korra are absolutely incredible. Book 3 is easily the best thing in the Avatar universe. Book 2 is mid except the Wan episodes and Book 4 is just good.

Sorry to tell you, but Korra is always gonna be the somewhat king of good sequel to an amazing show. It has high moments but it has very low ones. It’s too inconsistent. The supporting cast is trash. The fact that the villains are what make the show than the actual main cast is laughable, and I guess Korra repetitive character development. The fighting style is so basic looking compared to ATLA creative style. And Aang was a 12 yr old vs Korra 16-19. She definitely seemed more annoying and hot headed. And does she like to almost date the entire team avatar, like damn make up your mind and hurting Bolin. We’re not even going to talk about what happened to the past lives. It’s not misogyny or nostalgia, it’s just not that good. Yall Korra saviors love using those two words to be shielded from actual criticism.

So for Maddie, Aang had already opened the 7th shakra underneath Ba sing Se so had Azula not shot him down, he would have complete control over his Avatar state while defeating Zuko, Azula, and the Dai Li. But because Azula shot him and killed him, he was cut off. Katara brought him back to life the but the energy of the lightning was still keeping his spirit from reconnecting. the rock was the Hail Mary shot to release the energy.

Also while Avatar is a 10/10 show, Legend of Korra is like an 8.5 or 8/10. Still pleasant to watch but some low episodes and low character plot points for me.

Man, this was such a goated watch with you guys. I have watched ATLA like 4 times total, and now watching it with you guys after so long, it’s such a goated watch. The ending hit different such a good and happy conclusion. Top 3 best characters are Uncle, Zuko, and Aang, and I’m so happy you guys watched this with Maddie and Addie. Wow, yeah, the Zuko and Azula Agni Kai was the best and most beautiful thing in this series, and Zuko's character development hit different. Thanks for the goated journey Your reactions made the experience so much more goated and memorable, and it wouldn’t be as good if Addie and Maddie weren’t there they made the reactions goated.
