Hello Patrons! Here's your early access, ad-free look at this week's video.

Austria was interesting wasn't it? Suddenly the FIA got very trigger happy with penalties? So that's what we're looking at.

Great analysis, and thanks for highlighting the actual regs. I‘ve always been of the mind that an attacking driver who pulls alongside another car should be entitled to space, wether on the inside or the outside of the corner. Your point about the natural tendency of a car to swing wide vs an intentional move to “close the door” was very compelling however. I still think that the “correct” way forward is to ensure that the car on the outside is entitled to space, as you described at the end of the video, but it’s definitely a more nuanced opinion than it was previously.

How about a follow-up to discuss the penalties on Raikkonen, Latifi, and Mazespin? Seems odd that RAI (who took out Vettel) got less penalty than the other two, who didn't take anyone else out (even if they did create a risky situation). Is there more to it than I see?

Definitely a lot of disagreement in the comments so it's clearly not a clear cut case. Though I do think F1 has too many situations that have no black and white ruling so the stewards have to interpret each one. Not sure if this is a good thing.

I did originally plan to include the RAI/VET incident but it seemed out of scope. I really wanted to have the RUS/ALO incident as an example of it done right, without any accidents but there weren't any videos available at the time for me to map the animation to, sadly.
