I checked on Walz's timeline. In March 2005, he was running for office and knew he could be deployed, so he submitted his retirement paperwork in May 2005. His unit received their deployment notification in August 2005 and deployed to Iraq in April 2006. (The lead time for NG is longer than active duty.) https://apnews.com/article/walz-national-guard-military-ae43d684bf1319e535f9f620552155d7 Unless there was some type of accident with a time machine, it would seem that he submitted his paperwork before deployment notification. As for Vance, he served 1/6 the amount of time as Walz, and, you're right, he was just a PR person, aka spindoctor.

As an expat living overseas, I vote absentee. It's fantastic. I use Ballotpedia to research candidates, b/c they don't always declare their party affiliation on the ballot. First I don't vote for anyone that's republican or former republican and now unassociated, next I vote for women and minorities, then last is the old white dude. If the only person running for a seat is republican, I vote for myself as a write in.

The thing always to remember about statements and accusations made by Trump- they are projections. So Trump saying that Joe Biden is going to make a stink and try to take back the nomination- that's what TRUMP would do. That's about his insecurity that the GOP might try to force him out and that he will burn party to the ground before he lets that happen. Just like when he accused the Clintons (and Biden) of having a phony charity to steal money and peddle influence- that's because (we now know) that's what Trump did with his own charities.

Great show as always. Can I make a suggestion about your youtube channel that might help you get more views? I don't know what other listeners do but personally my podcast app automatically queues your podcast once it is released to the top of the list and I listen to it immediately because I am always looking forward to it. The associated video doesn't become available on YouTube till maybe a couple of days later so I never watch it. I would love to watch it though so maybe you should delay the podcast release and then release them both at the same time. I personally would then just go watch the video once I see the ep come up in my podcast feed. Thanks guys.

I don't know the ins and outs of French elections, but one thing I do know us that they vote twice. You have your voting day, see the results, then there is a 1 week kind-of cooling off period, where you get to decide if you want to stick with that vote or change it. https://www.politico.eu/article/france-legislative-election-2024-second-round-front-populaire-jean-luc-melenchon-raphael-glucksmann-shock-victory/

re Walz "deserting" his unit -- Walz may have heard rumors that his unit might have been deployed within a year, but no official orders had come down. Also, the reason that the military encourages 20-year veterans to retire by offering them a full lifetime pension is because a 40-year-old soldier is not as robust as a 20-year-old soldier. The pension is an acknowledgement that the veteran gave the military the best years of their lives. Finally, had the military REALLY needed this 40+ year old soldier, and felt that he was absolutely essential to the mission, they would have "stop-lossed" Walz. They would have said, "Sorry, pal, we're not LETTING you retire."
