We had Eli on for our recording session this week. We wanted to talk about the tweets from Trump about trans people in the military. We were also planning to talk healthcare, but we never got to it.

40 minutes of this interview will make it to the show on Monday, but we meandered through some skeptic community, youtube community and other things that were off topic. It is a good conversation but it won't all live in the wide release of the show.

We hope you enjoy this conversation. Check out the shorter version when it releases in 371.

Fuck anyone who has trouble deciding what side they're on with this stuff. This isn't hard to figure out. There is an obvious enemy and an obvious victim here. Let people bully you about being an SJW, wear it like the fucking badge of honor it is.

Great bonus episode! Love it when Eli and you guys have a deep dive into topics like this; However, the claim that the asshole from reddit was a kid was not correct... That misconception was circulated on places like reddit, but media pretty roundly said that he was in his 30s and the prospect of his hate reaching his kids was a strong influence toward his deleting and stopping. The possible upcoming Thomas correction show notwithstanding, I agreed with the sentiment expressed and hope to see more shows like this!

I enjoyed this show, and feel free to name me. I can't make public statements right now without probably getting in trouble, but I can't be held responsible for what you say. 3:)

This is a great ep/extra. Eli can totes come back. No punches pulled, and there's always something or several somethings that come up that makes me step back a give a hard look at myself/biases, etc. Keep up the great work.

Who's Michael Wood? Him?<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Wood_(historian)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Wood_(historian)</a>

Kyle

Michael Wood Jr is who they are referring to. He was the former Baltimore Police officer they interviewed a while back about the Black Lives Matter movement and police brutality in general. He was running to be the Chief of Police in Chicago if I remember right.

I love all you guys... However, I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disappointed with the fact that none of you seemed to even have a sliver of an idea what the vet who said he lost his arm thanks to Iran was talking about.

Kevin Sauer

Fact check here on /u/HanAssholeSolo, the person who allegedly created the CNN meme that Trump retweeted. Andrew Kaczynski, @KFILE on Twitter, the guy who ran the story in question, has stated that /u/HanAssholeSolo is a middle-aged man. The whole story about /u/HanAssholeSolo being a 15-year-old kid was (reportedly) a lie from 4chan that was ostensibly created to drum up support for the racist asshole and to incite people against CNN for "picking on a 15-year-old kid."

This episode really stuck with me. I'm still ruminating on it. One thing that keeps coming to mind though. Is there a way to neutralize these vastly destructive elements on social media? Is it all just up to twitter, youtube & facebooks policies? I see a seemingly consistent push towards self moderation, particularly with commenting service providers like disqus etc..twitter is leaning more this direction as well. But if the poison tends to collect in these toxic self perpetuating online echo chambers, what help is self moderation? Is there an alternative to the anonymous nature of the internet enabling these monsters?

Well to be fair - while the Vet knows about being in combat, he didn't seem to know anything about being trans, or about what happened with Iran - They were not paid any money - seized funds were returned as part of a deal which makes sure they do not create nuclear weapons. Ignorance is not a crime, but being a vet does not excuse you talking shit about stuff you are ignorant about. He got as much respect back as he himself showed in the twitter thread.

Ryan Parker

Ok smart ass.... (i.e. Sarah) What he is referring to is that the enemy he is fighting is largely funded and propped up by Iran and that the enemies we engage with, aka "The Insurgency" are heavily funded and trained by the MOIS. A lot of the weaponry in country is there thanks to Iran. That, is what he was referring to. You don't have to be a dick about it. I was just a bit surprised that three guys I love listening to who are generally well informed on these matters missed that. That's all. And Soren, I have no comment on any of that my friend. I was only talking about his remark in relation to Iran. I was not referring to or justifying anything else.

Ryan Parker

I also tried to edit my initial response but I guess it didn't take yesterday? Anyway, if I came off as an asshole in either my initial comment or my response I apologize. It was not my intention.

Ryan Parker

Why doesn't this thing change anything??? I literally edited my comment to not be so harsh two or three times and yet nothing has changed?
