2020 Democratic Debate

Comments

First Atheist President

Completely agree with the breakdown. My top 4 are sanders, warren, buttigeig, and harris. I've been following buttigeig since he ran for dnc chair, I'm so glad to hear how impressed you were with him.

While Bernie did not talk about his plan for going for single payer per se the plan Gillibrand was talking about the part she wrote for Bernie's medicare for all plan. I am in no way a Bernie bro the canidate in the lead for me is Warren.

Trump's Chode

Did you guys hear about Yang's mic supposedly being turned off for parts of the debate? He claims he tried to respond, and it looks in the video like he tries to respond, but gives up when the mic doesn't work. Still think he's a weenie for not making it known to the moderators what was happening, but that would explain why he didn't talk much.

Cognitive Dissonance Podcast

Yeah, we were wondering why he was so quiet. It came out after that he claimed his mic was off. Hope that we can at least hear about his plan in more detail.

Niferbelle

I really enjoyed this. I hope you will continue to analyze the debates as the election draws closer.

Per request: I agree that Beto pretty much shit the bed the first night, but that’s extra disappointing for people who were fans of his. After he ran against Cruz, I felt about him the way Tom feels about Pete right now. It’s kind of impossible to quantify what he did for the state of Texas if you don’t live here, but here goes my attempt. He got people in Texas excited about progressive politics in a way I’ve never seen before and drove people to the polls in a historically low turnout state. He didn’t win, no, but there are a fuck ton of down-ballot races that were won because people showed up excited to vote for Beto. He did all of that by being authentic and thoughtful and admitting he wasn’t perfect and feeling like a real human with flaws but one that would fight tooth and nail for what he thought was right (his response to NFL players kneeling is powerful in the same ways as Pete’s response on the South Bend police force.) But then Beto decided to run for president and hired a bunch of consultants and experts who probably told him to quit doing all the things that made people fall in love with him in the first place. Or so I assume. I have no other explanation for that debate performance. He genuinely wasn’t the same guy that ran against Cruz. But. My top pick is definitely Warren. I also want to push back a little on the idea that she wasn’t aggressive. She absolutely was. She was aggressive in the way of a woman who’s had to learn how to do that well. She never shouted over anyone or spoke out of turn because when she talked, everyone else shut the fuck up and listened. The only person who tried to challenge her was the moderator. Once. He called time and bitch just blinked and kept talking like the stone cold badass she is. You don’t call time on Liz Warren. Liz Warren tells you when she’s finished talking.

Angela said just about my thoughts on the subject: Beto came into the scene on fire and really had an "it" factor. He was honest, earnest, and had plans that made sense. At this point I kinda hope he just comes back home to take Cornyn's seat. Two years ago my top picks were Warren, Harris, Booker, and Castro to watch for. Happy that those are still good choices. Warren is gonna be a great first Lady President.

I too was surprised by di Blasio's energy and ideas. He was compelling. I don't think he can win the national, but he probably has a place in a future administration.

My top pick was always either Beto or Warren. I was pleased with Warren’s debate performance, and v disappointed with Beto. I honestly felt like he had the best chance against Trump. A young, telegenic progressive from Texas is such huge contrast to the stale soggy Cheeto in the White House. He seems to have the right idea on most of the issues, and was downright inspiring to listen to in his race against Cruz. If he’s to make it to the next debates, I really hope we get the old Beto back.
